27 years to the day

Post by Quickenthetempo » Fri Oct 05, 2018 11:31 am

When the magic started.

Jimmy Mullen (my favourite ever Burnley manager) took temporary charge of our great club.

A 2-0 home win against Carlisle started the great run of 9 consecutive wins on the bounce.

I thought it was just a cheap option by the board at the time to employ the assistant manager when Frank Casper resigned but the rest is history.

JIMMY MULLENS CLARET AND BLUE ARMY.

I think we all did at the time
Interesting what Roger Eli said in his book when he was hinting at Mullen trying to undermine Casper to get his job - especially at Torquay in the play-offs.

you got my hopes up then, CotC - thought it might have been Derby away, one of my stand-out moments as a claret, nay, as a football fan

I went to Scarborough where it was torrential rain, strong winds and absolute freezing in that open end with the performance on the pitch being as dismal as the weather.

My memory is that it was the game before Carlisle and the game where Casper got sacked. I always looked back thinking one of the most awful away experiences was one of the best things that happened to Burnley as it prompted the change that was the catalyst for the best season ive had supporting Burnley

I'll put my hand up as another one who thought it was the cheap option appointing Mullen. He didn't do a bad job for us did he? But I also felt that under Casper we wouldn't have won promotion, despite what has been written about players respecting him etc. we turned in some dreadful stuff under him, none more so than the 3-0 at Scarborough that led to his demise.

It was the cheap option. The board got lucky that the right man happened to be at the bclub already.

What a great season (except Blackpool away)! Carlisle away was a blast despite the equaliser.

To be fair he was on trial for a few games but winning 6-2 away at Wrexham would get most managers the job.

Casper was playing with back threes, wing backs, Sweepers etc etc. Game after game was over analysed for the level we were at. Mullen got the gig stuck Jackub at left back stuck Francis on the wing with Eli up front played 4-4-2 and we never looked back.

Just checking, Lancashire scored 8 goals in 7 games starting with Scarborough away then didn't score another league goal all season after York at home on Bonfire night. He scored v Aldershot but that was wiped from the records.

It’s a shame that Jimmy eventually blotted his copy book buy nearly taking us back to where he found us, though I do think the pusillanimous Board were more responsible than him.
It was a hell of a ride while it lasted, mind. That ‘91/‘92 Season was my first experience as a fan of seeing just what a potent Team could do, Home and Away. We were scintillating at times that season.

Didn't George Oghani play for Scarborough at the time? I concur with it being the coldest and wettest I've ever been onna football match!

I was there and the weather was as you described. I left early for the first time ever as I couldn't stand the abuse my childhood hero Frank Casper was getting.

No......surely he played for us? That's also the last time as a burnley fan I've heard a chant for the manager to be sacked. So to be fair we are loyal to our managers. Muttering about them is fine I suppose.

I was at Barnsley when their were calls for Laws to be sacked and we had won !! And Mullen Out was common place towards the end.

I'd married and honeymooned at the time of the Scarborough match. So anything after that my hearing became very selective! :D

Guessing, sadly, there's no footage of that game.
If there is, I love to see it! Been lucky enough to see lots of great occasions at footy grounds over the years.
Absolutely nothing like that though.

The board sacked Mullen after turn your backs gate to deflect from themselves.

The board stayed to loyal to long to Laws. Burnley fans were cheering the goals against us against Scunthorpe? at home.

Cant remember Oghani playing for Scarborough that day but he definitely was long gone from Burnley by then

I was actually in the Gallowgate end at St James Park as I'd just started Uni when the half time score came in that we were winning 4-2 at Wrexham.

Mental season that, and ending up with me being at York for that magical night and singing my way back up the East Coast Main line.

I thought Frank Casper resigned; wasn't sacked.
In fact having thought about it we don't sack many managers. Is the following correct? Cliff Britton -resigned, Frank Hill resigned, Alan Brown resigned, Billy Dougal-resgned due to ill health Harry Potts Mk1 pushed upstairs, Adamson sacked, Joe Brown -sacked. Potts Mk2 sacked, Brian Mllier Mk1 sacked, Bond sacked, Benson left or was he sacked?. Buchan resigned, Cavanagh-left end of season, Miller Mk2 resigned, Casper resigned, Mullen sacked, Heath resigned, Waddle resigned, Stan left at end of contract, Cotts resigned/pushed out, Coyle-left, Laws sacked, Howe resigned

I thought Mullen resigned after an incident in a chippy pushed him too far.
Didn't Bond resign too?
What happened with Casper first time round? Was he only a caretaker manager or was he sacked to make way for Bond?
