The word "so" before a sentence.
Why has this suddenly started to be the norm ? I blame Will. I. Am.

It's a habit, a trend. Our language develops every day, some of these habits become common usage, others fall by the wayside.

Can’t say I’ve been aware of this one but just so many other cringe worthy faults in the language that you have to endure, the bulk perhaps stemming from football punditry. ‘I was sat’ instead of ‘sitting’ or being referred to as ‘yourself’. It doesn’t bear thinking about.

Not as bad as all those people who use the word “literally” in every sentence...despite me trying to explain that the sentence has exactly the same meaning without the word !

Re: The word "so" before a sentence.
Actually 'literally' means just that, which in itself often makes a sentence nonsense, like, 'I was literally dying' or 'I literally sh!it myself'.TVC15 wrote:Not as bad as all those people who use the word “literally” in every sentence...despite me trying to explain that the sentence has exactly the same meaning without the word !
I must admit it annoys me somewhat because it does show a complete ignorance of the meaning of the word.
As an aside, do you ever notice that females use the word 'literally' more than males? I have no idea why.

Slightly different, but I think the word "erm" is over used by liverpudlians.
When my oldest thought I was cool enough to attend the game with, we used to try and guess how many times Jim Bentley would say "erm" in his post match interview.
We were both always miles away from being right

Having a discussion with someone and they start a sentence with “no, but” or just “no” makes me pretty much stop listening to whatever follows.

Ok, so what about "Ok, so" at the beginning of a sentence?

Just to add another word to this debate. A local School Head Teacher near us has told his staff that he doesn't want to hear the word "Guys" used when talking to a group of "pupils" - "scholars" -"students".

And don’t get me going on the use of apostrophes in plurals! So many times now I see the insert of an apostrophe into a plural before the s when plural has not been used in the sentence as a possessive noun. Grrr!

All of the above are irritating but currently I need to know when the L was removed from the word VULNERABLE. It seems anyone interviewed for TV or Radio on subjects like homelessness or child abuse etc refer to "vunerable" people. gggrrrr!!

Re: The word "so" before a sentence.
Very pleased to see Electroclaret point the finger at the "Can I get a ..."brigade. If I worked in a coffee shop and you asked me "Can I get a soy latte" or whatever I would have to respond "I'm afraid not as I can't let you this side of the counter".
There was a woman being interviewed by Nicky Campbell on 5 Live yesterday morning about global warming and every single answer began with "So...." , just one after the other. Very, very irritating and definitely another growing trend.

I count myself as really picky about language and quite conservative about change to it but some of the resistance to harmless colloquialisms, entirely normal padding in the spoken word and standard Hiberno-English here is quite baffling.

Re: The word "so" before a sentence.
Your first and last sentences above are both improperly constructed. They were entirely coherent and easily understood but that's not the standard you set.Stalbansclaret wrote:Very pleased to see Electroclaret point the finger at the "Can I get a ..."brigade. As a cunning linguist you have to realise that language develops. Each year the lexicographers introduce more words into our dictionaries. Most of ‘em ******** as Chaucer would say.

Re: The word "so" before a sentence.
In Canada, most people add "eh" to the ends of their sentences. What it really is is an invitation to reply, eh?
