Very clearly remember a goal he conceded at the Beehole end v WBA. A shot from outside the box flew into to right hand side of the net, as Colin arms raised to his right as he moved across his goalmouth and watched it go in. A shot he should and could have saved.

Royboy besides McDonald( in his blue England cap, with tassels), do you know if Adamson was the only other player we had who appeared on the front cover of Charles Buchan
Charles Buchan. I am sure I saw that or something about that in my father's news agency
Please remind me.

This is a really good thread.
I have enjoyed reading the posts. Some lovely comment. And fortunately none of the those who constantly post their nonsense.

Wasn't Stevenson touted as a possible England goalkeeper, but had Clemence, Shilton, Corrigan, Stepney, and Rimmer, ahead of him? In those days they used to share the England goalkeepers out, rather than have them all at one club!

unique... surely no other club will ever do anything similar. Seem to remember watching a Burnley Bolton game in the 50s when it was Eddie Hopkinson at the other end.

The ones on this thread and the article are ones I took with my phone but the club had a photographer there too so potentially will be better quality.

I remember Tommy Lawrence in goal for Liverpool when we played them twice in the FA. Cup 4th round in 1963. A formidable figure in a side beginning it's long trek to where they are now. I don't think we'd get away with referring to someone as 'the flying pig' nowadays, even in affectionate terms but that was a completely different era to the pc one that seems to pervade most things today.
Just to mention too about the heights of goalkeepers all those years ago. Lots of outstanding goalies around with Hopkinson at Bolton and Hodgkinson at Sheff Utd. who weren't that tall as far as I can recall.Wolves had a keeper in the late 50's,Bert Williams, who was something like 5ft. 7ins. tall but I stand to be corrected on that.

Eddie Hopkinson was definitely small - and then there was Harry Thomson at Burnley

Alan Stevenson got an under 23 England call up. Like Colin McDonald, he also used to do a similar 'Arms in the air' thing (usually both arms) when he thought the ball was going wide, and sometimes it didn't!

Stevenson played 11 times for the under-23s, including one up front alongside Paul Fletcher. He did receive a full England call up in 1974 for a friendly against Portugal. Martin Dobson made his England debut that night, Stevenson was on the bench and Burnley drew 3-3 at Old Trafford with Jeff Parton having a nightmare in goal.

Just 4 days after the semi final loss to Newcastle. 2 pens. for us in that game, too, both converted by Leighton James at the Stretford End.

As far as I know, Strong is the only Morpeth born player to have appeared in an FA Cup Final when we played Charlton in 1947.

Speaking of goalkeepers with diminutive stature I spent a season at Haslingden St Mary's as understudy to Tony "Shay" White. He cannot have been over 5' 6" but was an amazing keeper. Folks might know him better as wicketkeeper for Haslingden CC for many years.

Went to junior school with Tony and then played in the same team as him when we were teenagers and played on Saturday mornings (Accrington and district league and later on than that on Saturday afternoons (Blackburn/district league). Won a cup final in 1966(no,not that one) with Tony in goal played over two Saturday evenings(first game was a draw and we won the replay). First goal in the replay was a cracking 20 yarder off his left foot but the scorer's name escapes me. :D

I think I'm right in saying Alan Stevenson came from Chesterfield as did Gordon Banks and possibly so did Bob Wilson

Don't know how many subs were permitted then but we'd used our maximum other than a goalkeeping change. Someone got injured and couldn't continue so we brought on the sub goalkeeper who had to go in goal, so Stevenson came out of goal and moved up front for the rest of the game.

The club have featured Colin McDonald on this week's edition of Turf More.

Apart from the bloke announcing the award, it's a really good watch.

Green for FL and yellow for most internationals, although Lev Yashin was famous as the man in black.
We all laughed at Sepp Maier and his oversized gloves but it wasn’t long before they were all wearing them.
Back in the early 60s Hopkinson(Bolton) and Hodgkinson(Sheff. Utd) were particularly small as was our own Harry Thomson and in the 70s we had Mick Finn at 5’8”.

Aye, another fine keeper was Waiters, played 5 times for England.

Think he actually came to us as a coach, but when Peter Mellor was injured around 1970 Tony came out of retirement and played some 40 games for Burnley. No doubt his day will come to be remembered here, but last week was all about Colin McDonald.

Colin McDonald is 88 today.

I don't know how many former Clarets are alive and older than Colin but having spent a couple of hours in his company last week I'm still finding it very difficult to believe he's of that age.

Happy Birthday Colin.

Stevenson was either 3rd or 4th behind, Clemence and Shilton [or Shilton and Clemence]. Parkes of WHU was arguably 3rd choice.
