Re: James McLean - Ireland
He's typical of young men brought up in an environment of hostility and open prejudice.
I don't like him because of it but at the same time I pity him. The kind of mindset he apparently shows is stuck in the 1970s.
It's troubling and saddening.

Never heard of him.
Re: James McLean - Ireland
A very apt day to bring him up. Feel sorry for the bloke, clearly has his demons.
Football wise, thought he would fit into our style of play, and wouldn't have been to adverse at us bringing him in as a 4th wide option to replace Arfield. He'd have got quite a few minutes this season for us

In terms of being Premier League quality, I think I’d rather have a user on here drawn out of the hat, in the squad.Falcon wrote:I'd have him in our squad.

Maybe it's not as simple as Good Guys versus Bad Guys.
If he's good enough, I'd have him in the squad. I don't care about a football player's political views unless he's actively promoting terrorism.

Re: James McLean - Ireland
If playing wise, he is a better option than having either an 18 year old untried kid or nobody at all on the bench, then of course i would want him to be in our squad.theroyaldyche wrote:Cant believe some people would have him in our squad.
I also couldn't give two shiny shites about his political leanings as it has nothing whatsover to do with his footballing abilities.

Idiot. Read some history occasionally instead of the tabloids, and you might learn something other than what the establishment want you to think.Quickenthetempo wrote:Maybe if the Irish weren't murdering people the army wouldn't have to have gone there?

Re: James McLean - Ireland
Mclean's political view is a product of his upbringing just like David Healey's was from the opposite side of the divide.
There are plenty of Spanish players with opposing views over Catalonia.
I don't think McLean is doing anything to be ashamed of based on his political view even if it may differ to mine.

Re: James McLean - Ireland
I learnt this today about St Patrick.
According to the Confessio of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals; he lived there for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland.
Not always been about a post Cromwellian Ireland, coming over here nicking our tennagers!

".. Which bit of history do you want me to read...."
1....Irish Holocaust
2....Black and Tans"Ireland's Holocaust of 1845-50 was one of history's greatest crimes. Its toll was well over five million innocents comprising the most gaelic, least anglified, of the people. Their bones are strewn in mass graves across Ireland. They are also along the routes fled by the desperate starvelings - the canal tow-paths and roads to Dublin, in and around England's cities especially Liverpool; also along the routes to and sites of Australian death camps, along the sea floor below the coffin-ship routes to Canada and the U.S. and along the shores of both and of the St. Lawrence river. Untold thousands were cremated at home by neighbors who, upon finding the entire family perished, would torch the thatch rather than risk contagion....

The attitude of the Black and Tans is best summed up by one of their divisional commanders:
3....The B-Specials – Unionism’s stormtroopers“If a police barracks is burned or if the barracks already occupied is not suitable, then the best house in the locality is to be commandeered, the occupants thrown into the gutter. Let them die there – the more the merrier.Should the order (“Hands Up”) not be immediately obeyed, shoot and shoot with effect. If the persons approaching (a patrol) carry their hands in their pockets, or are in any way suspicious-looking, shoot them down. You may make mistakes occasionally and innocent persons may be shot, but that cannot be helped, and you are bound to get the right parties some time. The more you shoot, the better I will like you, and I assure you no policeman will get into trouble for shooting any man.”
Lt. Col. Smyth, June 1920

"...ANTI-CATHOLIC POGROMS
"....The B-Specials were responsible for anti-Catholic pogroms in every decade from the 1920s to the 1960s, and were heavily involved in the attempts to smash the civil rights movement of 1968-69, as well as the attacks on the nationalist areas of Belfast, Newry, Derry and other areas in the North in August 1969.......
With the eyes of the world focused on events in the North during the summer of 1969, however, the blatant sectarianism of the force became an embarrassment to Britain and in October the B-Specials were disbanded and a new armed loyalist force, the Ulster Defence Regiment, replaced them.
Former B-Special members joined the UDR en masse and the change, in effect, only meant a change of name and uniform for the bigots of Northern loyalism....."

A difficult topic and one that has a historical backdrop spanning hundreds of years. Im not sure lifting articles wholesale from An Poblacht is going to help in gaining a balanced understanding.
