Steve Bruce for director of football

Post by Woodleyclaret » Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:08 am

I feel this would be a good appointment. He seems the sort of guy Sean could work with and seems to be able to recruit well at his former clubs

Always seems to sign loads of players from strange places. Birmingham, Wigan, Sunlan, Hull all saddled with debt.

Did ok with a couple of Concacaf lads at Wigan, but who since?

Why would someone who has never done the job suddenly be a good appointment? Bruce has relied on Stan Ternent doing that job for him (the recruitment side) at most of his last few clubs other than Villa.

I'll probably get slated on here for saying this but the first name I thought of was Steve Cotterill. He knows the club and has a good eye for a player. 2 examples John McGreal coming towards the end of his career and Gary Cahill a young up and coming player. He's also been in and around football for a long time. Long enough to know the requirements and for me a small part of the process to get us to where we are today.

Dyche is a big fan of Steve Bruce. But it’s unlikely to happen.

Steve Cotterill is a great shout. What could possibly go wrong putting a perennial lower league failure and egotistical bumpkin into a Technical Director role at a premier league club?

Needs to be ideally someone with experience either has worked abroad or has knowledge of the European market. For a club with our budget that’s where the bargains are

Another upvote for Steve Cotterill. I think he's flawed as a manager, but he has a real eye for a player and can spot them early enough to get the kind of value for money that Burnley needs.

Brought some decent players to Burnley after inheritting a squad of nine, was it? But McGreal, Sinclair, Harley, Alexander weren't exactly 'finds'

What have his signings been like since joining us? (Genuine question as I've no idea)

EDIT: I’m also seeing Stan Ternant and Steve Cotterill being mentioned. I shouldn’t be surprised but god almighty

Spot on about looking abroad but it ain't gonna happen is it. The thread about Spaniards at Burnley yesterday got me looking and our history of employing foreigners is almost non-existent. When we do they tend to fail. Obviously Defour and JBG are an exception but they also show that foreign investment can often be the way forward. I would love to see it but I won't hold my breath.

Cotts would be the perfect foil for Dyche you can just see them working together

Dyche: "Stevie can you find me a really hard working player with no flair and skill to save me having to drain it out of them"
Cotts: "You're in luck Sean. Dull uninspiring footballers who can hoof it hard and long are my specialty"

Teamwork makes the dream work

So we've got Bruce, Cotterill & Ternent so far. I suspect the person who gets the job will be someone who has done the technical director type role previously which would rule all three of them out. The only person I can think of who has been a manager and also done that role is Mark Warburton, that was his first job at Brentford.

We will be looking for a Dan Ashworth type I would imagine.

As said, I don't think we are looking for someone for experience as a manager.

I’d imagine their would have to be a change in the boardroom from Cotterill to ever return even as a steward.

Apart from Warburton, I can think of one or two others. Funnily enough, one of them is Brian Flynn who did the technical role with Wales for one. If we're talking about candidates with a claret connection then he and his old side kick Kevin Reeves (now Chief Scout at Everton) would seem more plausible than Ternant or Cotterill. I'm not sure the logic of targetting someone with connections to the club stacks up by the way - the only real advantage is if you get continuity because the person's links means theyre more likely to stick around, but that won't always hold.

The trouble with ex managers as technical directors is they tend to be used to the limelight and have a little bit of ego (inevitable part of being a number 1) which rarely gels well with an existing manager (funnily enough whilst I'm not touting Flynn, he's by all accounts not got any sort of ego which might be why hes increasingly taken background roles as hes got older).

The best technical directors tend to be either scouts by background or "dealers" who are good at getting deals done (sometimes ex agents). Ultimately, weve got to decide what skill set we lack- is it a talent spotter, a deal-doer or someone who can do that but also take control of the wider football scene below the first team, and recruit accordingly.

Believe we are - was reported a week or so ago. But given the structure suggested - Dyche would still report directly to the Chairman, it feels very much like a background, administrative role rather than a wider ranging brief.

Hopefully we can find someone with new and wider contacts rather than ex BFC managers or players.

Didn't Reeves leave Everton when Martinez went? He was at QPR last time I heard.

Aren't Warburton and Dyche friends? If he has done the job at Brentford then that would probably be a good move (assuming he would be interested)

Surely it should be someone who understands (or can learn to understand) our club, like Dyche does, but can also broaden its horizons, in recruitment and sports science and psychology.

Without knowing the exact role it’s incredibly difficult to figure out who exactly would be a good fit for the role.

CT’s comments about it being a recruitment role primarily but with heavy input into the academy side of the club mean that for me we need somebody with a track record of successful transfer dealings but who’s not so divorced from coaching/effective management that they cannot oversee the youth set up.

Whoever we appoint has to be a long term appointment- we can not afford to employ somebody and then see them bugger off in 12/18 months. This person needs to do the following:
(1) Improve our domestic scouting network at all levels
(2) Establish and then develop a foreign scouting network
(3) Create a “Burnley” template for our youth set up; a way of playing that allows for coherent progression through the entire youth set up but which is also allied closely enough to the first team so that when we do get players able to make the transition they’re not having to learn a whole new playing style.
(4) Employ U23 and U18 coaches who fit the model created.

This genuinely could be the most important staff recruitment process we do for the next 5-10 years...

As much as I want a quick appointment I think that we have to do this slowly and professionally. We can not afford to get it wrong!
