Big corruption scandal rocks Belgian football

Post by Belgianclaret » Fri Oct 12, 2018 6:47 pm

Several agents/intermediaries, board members of first division clubs, managers, lawyers and top referees have been arrested in a giant operation against corruption in the Belgian first division (premier league).
Money laundering, matchfixing, blackmailing are amongst the claims brought by the Public Prosecutor.

All second division matches planned for this weekend have been postponed.

Echoes of the great matchfixing scandal that rocked Belgian football in the early eighties, but now even of a lager scale.

I am not surprised at all by this. For years now, Belgian clubs were seen as a worthwhile "investment" project for various foreign (third party) owners, and certain agents have become too powerful. Crazy how people with lucrative contracts and exuberant incomes cannot quench their greed for more.

Football just appears corrupt at most levels.

I'm sure UEFA and FIFA will sort it out. Thank God, they aren't corrupt.

Belgian football is a bit like Belgian chocolate, over-rated and overpriced.

Does this mean that Lukaku will no longer be Belgian? Fellaini I can accept.

I once had a Belgian girl bring me Belgian chocolates full of fresh whipped cream. She was horrible like, but the attempt was duly appreciated.

I think anyone that thinks football isn't corrupt must be daft, pogbas transfer showed that the money that is paid to agents is disgusting, how can an agent be working for all three parties in the same deal?

The investigators searched the house of Mogi Bayat, a guy who managed to get his hands on nearly any in or outgoing transfer in Belgium. They found boxes of more than € 8 million worth of watches. His lawyer now claims that he is a collector of empty boxes of luxury watches  :o

These stories might explain why Burnley are wary of shopping in the overseas market,if the agents are looking for a large % to close the deal,i'd rather we walked away from any such transfers and invested in the youth system.
