Class of 2009
Class of 2009
I know it'll be a touchy subject for some on here, but is anyone else purchased tickets for next May?

Haven’t read or heard anything so I am intrigued as to what this is and also why it is touchy for people on here.

Re: Class of 2009
Coyle had his reunion with the fans when we beat Bolton 1-0 in September 2010. The fans made it perfectly clear what they thought of him. I doubt he would receive welcomes in Bolton, Wigan or Blackburn either.

I think it'll be great to have Coyle there. All water under the bridge for me as a supporter, he redeemed himself with his role in Blackburns relegation. I'm sure he'll tell some great stories and give an great insight to the promotion and the Capital Punishment campaign too. It'll be nice to see Clarke Carlisle there too hopefully.

Some still act like a jilted ex, when it comes to accepting that, that season was the most unexpected season, ending in a fantastic Wembley promotion.ClaretAndJew wrote:Whys it a touchy subject?
It is probably the most exciting season many fans have experienced, with so many great memories along the way.
That season made many of my childhood dreams come true.
I'd be more than happy for the manager to be there, and he'd get a hand shake and a thanks from me.
He played a massive part in where we are today, and also where our neighbours are too.
It's all water under the bridge for me.

Re: Class of 2009
Wonderful end to the season that can't ever be forgotten by those that witnessed it. But the beginning left much to be desired with just the one point on the board after poor displays and poor discipline on the pitch. It picked up,of course, and was driven along by our exploits in cup competitions. We lost 5 consecutive games in Jan/Feb but then rallied again after a win at wet and windy Blackpool.
The end was just fairy story stuff; we were destined to go up and that day at Wembley with family and friends all travelling on the same bus(we were the first Clarets coach on the car park as gates opened at 11am) was just perfect. It won't happen again like that and neither should it.

Re: Class of 2009
This! it was visibly tangible how the cup exploits and the team's belief in itself lifted it on that run to the ultimate. And as much as I utterly enjoy and appreciate the organization and strength that has come from the appointment of Sean Dyche, I can't help reflect, each time we meekly bow out of yet another cup competition, how it kills any momentum.Silkyskills1 wrote:. Dyche would argue against that, but in a season where the 1-2% psychology of having achieved the highest position outside of the top six, and having to go at it again works against you, successful cup runs can galvanize.

So many significant moments in that season and I'm sure everybody has their own one to choose but for me on your suggestion of 'momentum' the outstanding one was the very late equaliser scored by Martin Paterson at WBA just a few days after the gut-wrenching game at home to Spurs. We looked broken after the Spurs game but just three days later a mend was in the offing and again,as you say, we were galvanized. A remarkable season.

Re: Class of 2009
Remarkable season.
So many high points packed in.
Charlton at home was another turning point. Think it was on the back of the five defeats. Sure they were bottom with hardly a point, took the lead then undertook some of the most blatant time wasting you are likely to see.
We battered them and battered them until the very late winner arrived.

I'm 66 so I've plenty to choose from but I couldn't disagree with what you say. And talking of 10th anniversaries we are fast approaching that incredible night at Stamford Bridge. Trying to explain what it was like that night to someone that wasn't there has just proved impossible for me.ClaretAndJew wrote:My favourite season by a long shot and u suspect anyone who is between 20-30, will be their favourite seasons too.

Re: Class of 2009
When we won the Championship we looked awful in the first three games being lucky to grab 2 pts. We also went 6 games without a win before Xmas but I've not heard anyone care that it was the second half of the season going 23 unbeaten that won us the league in fact we sing songs about it with pride.Silkyskills1 wrote:Wonderful end to the season that can't ever be forgotten by those that witnessed it. In 08/09 we picked up 13 points from 15 in Sept and after losing the first two games we only lost once again in the next 13 games so this idea that we just had a fairy tail ending is rubbish. We had a blip in the middle of the season a bit like we did last season but we bounced back and deservedly made the playoffs and got promotion

Re: Class of 2009
Any team that 'makes the play-offs' fully deserves it. It's a long slog from August till May but I still maintain the 'fairy story' end to the season. A 4-2 win at home to Palace was the starting point but in that game we were 0-2 down at half time and 1-2 down with around 10 mins. of the game left. All a matter of opinion though but having witnessed the 'highs' of the 60's and then the 80's era it was a fantastic feeling to get through to Wembley and then win it with my children loving every moment of it by my side.
Re: Class of 2009
Now that was a night! But it shows just how fantastic that season was that it still rates behind Reading away in the play-offs and the final itself in my all time great Burnley memories.Silkyskills1 wrote:I'm 66 so I've plenty to choose from but I couldn't disagree with what you say. Re: Class of 2009
There were so many times during that season where I thought we had blown it and were going to miss out on the playoffs but the team just kept on coming back and the end to the season was superb and the 4 consecutive wins all with clean sheets to seal it was a perfect end to a season that I'll never forget.
Still hate Coyle for the way he left though and have enjoyed watching his spectacular burnout into obscurity since

Re: Class of 2009
I agree with silkyskills that the late equaliser against WBA was a significant marker that season.
I also believe if we had beaten Spurs and got to Wembley we would never had got promoted

Re: Class of 2009
Away at Watford in a midweek match around January time was the point for me where I thought we'd blown it. A shoddy performance with no defensive cohesiveness and then we barely lost again for the rest of the season.Goobs wrote:There were so many times during that season where I thought we had blown it and were going to miss out on the playoffs

Re: Class of 2009
That was one of the moments for me to be honest. It's not often I don't really want to go to a game but the Spurs game had done for me. I went and that fightback in the second half was something special, made everyone believe again.Silkyskills1 wrote:So many significant moments in that season and I'm sure everybody has their own one to choose but for me on your suggestion of 'momentum' the outstanding one was the very late equaliser scored by Martin Paterson at WBA just a few days after the gut-wrenching game at home to Spurs. But the home game against Palace later in the season was a key result. 2-0 down and still losing 2-1 with just a few minutes left before, incredibly, going on to win it 4-2.

Fantastic season of exciting football. Further to what has already been mentioned, the atmosphere in Burnley town centre on the night after we beat Bristol City 4-0 to clinch a play off spot was absolutely incredible! Hundreds of supporters chanting, clapping, dancing and even climbing traffic lights! Never known anything like it before or since....

Reading at home that season never seen a much more one sided game they battered us chance after chance. The Beast was WORLD CLASS that night and thats no over reaction. Then we win it thanks to the little magician Robbie Blake. What id give for a player like him in our team today.
