It's just not cricket...
The game's completley lost its way and the saying should be consigned to the history books.
You can't 'Mankad'a batsman (when he's trying to cheat) but you can do this and not feel guilty about it.

If one of those situations deserves a warning from the fielding team and not to do it again, it's today's error - not the cheating of trying to steal ground. Of course, it was Australia so anything goes I guess...

They could easily have run two instead of assuming it had gone for 4.
A bit like playing to the whistle in football.

Re: It's just not cricket...
The batsman should really have made sure the ball had gone for four before talking mid wicket.. Aussies being Aussies they do what's best for them and don't give warnings so I'm afraid the fault lies with the batsmen .

I don’t understand why they thought it was a four.
It was still a decent distance off. You’d easily be able to see that.

Tough ****. I'd have done exactly what the Aussies did.

They didn't look, just turned their backs on it. I'd be embarrassed if I saw that in a village game.Bordeauxclaret wrote:I don’t understand why they thought it was a four.

Re: It's just not cricket...
Poor batting and the Aussies did nowt wrong imo. I'm all for fair play and gentlemanly conduct, but that was plain poor cricket by the batsmen. You run until the umpire clearly signals 4. I was once batting with a chap who was run out in almost identical circumstances to that many years ago, but the difference was I knew it hadn't quite reached the boundary and was yelling him to get into his ground, but he didn't and was (rightly) given run out.

From his expression I think the bowler knows what's going on, and plays on it by quietly walking towards his mark.
Re: It's just not cricket...
To me it looked like all the players thought it had reached the boundary until the fielder actually reached it and then realised that it was just short.

Re: It's just not cricket...
You cant really blame the Aussies for that- as pointed out above, it's the batsmen's fault for not "playing to the whistle". It's not like they used subterfuge to pretend it had gone,
The ball wasn't right close to the boundary and it was clearly slowing a lot as it went that way so just carelessness by the batters in not making sure.
Not that Pakistan are too worried anyway- set Australia 538 to win in the 4th innings.

Absolutely the correct thing to do by the Aussies. The batsman should have made sure the ball had reached the boundary. Remember, assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

Nothing wrong with that
Would the OP have been posted if it had been England and not Australia?

Embarrassing by batsmen of that level. Used to see similar running between the wickets in 2nd team in local cricket.

I have more or less zero interest in cricket but saw the clip online and thought, for an international match, why is the ground empty???!

I trust Pakistan will grind Australia into the dirt so it will be irrelevant.

Pakistan play home games in the middle east since there was a shoot out in 2009 before a Pakistan v Sri Lanka home game in Lahore when several Sri Lanka players were injured (and some policemen killed). Seems prospective away teams have been put off visiting Pakistan after that.have more or less zero interest in cricket but saw the clip online and thought, for an international match, why is the ground empty???!
This match is in Dubai (next test in Abu Dhabi); the indigenous Arab population probably not too interested in cricket and the gastarbeiter Pakistanis are probably all slaving away at their jobs during the daytime on Thursday.

Much as I detest the Australians and their "sporting" ethic in this instance surprisingly there was no cheating.

Was there a similar incident, possibly involving Ian Bell a few years ago? I seem to recall there was a difference there in that the ball should have been called dead.

Rank carelessness from the batsmen.
The Aussies did nothing wrong! If the Pakistani's want to throw away their wickets, it's up to them.
Can't help wondering, if there had actually been anyone there watching the match, some sort of crowd participation might have helped prevent it.

If the batsman never attempted a run at all and just walked down to speak to each other you may have a slight case for dead ball, but as soon as you set off for a run then dead ball is taken out of it completely.TheFamilyCat wrote:Was there a similar incident, possibly involving Ian Bell a few years ago? Looking good at the moment. Aussies 155-7 at lunch. Still requiring 383 to win, or bat for 5 sessions.
Also looks like Usman Khawaja won’t bat.

I'm not claiming the ball was dead on this situation, as I said above, the Pakistanis were completely at fault here and tough ****.Quickenthetempo wrote:If the batsman never attempted a run at all and just walked down to speak to each other you may have a slight case for dead ball, but as soon as you set off for a run then dead ball is taken out of it completely.
I was trying to recall a similar incident where the batter (Bell, I think) was run out when he thought the ball was dead. I think he was walking off the field for the tea interval.

Re: It's just not cricket...
I remember the one you're thinking of Family cat.
The batsmen assumed the ball was dead and started casually walking off the field as it was lunch or teatime but the umpires hadn't called time and the ball hadn't yet been returned to the wicketkeeper so it was actually still in play.
The ball was then thrown to the keeper who ran Bell out.
The umpires gave him out (correctly IMO) despite the boos from the crowd and protests from Bell.
If I remember, India did sportingly retract their appeal during the break and Bell was allowed to resume his innings.

Re: It's just not cricket...
From memory i thought that the Bell incident was more clear cut that there was an injustice but having read your description, I'm not too sure.
Both batsmen mistakenly thought the ball was dead and carelessly acted as though it was.
Ironic that Pakistan should retract their appeal when they were the victims this time.

Have they checked the batsmans phone yet to see what the odds were on him being run out?

Vinoo Mankad was a professional in the Central Lancs League when I were a lad, a decent cricketer too.
