Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
My older brother just mentioned this to me only last week and I have to admit I had to do some quick counting to convince myself that he was right. Can see clearly the first and fourth goals. A sort of cross-shot from Coates that Sprake dived under at the Bee Hole.End and a left foot rocket from 'Skippy' down at the other end from the corner of the penalty box.
Results kept on coming after that and there was certainly a spring back in the club........... for a while at least.

I really enjoyed that as it brought back so many great memories. I loved that victory, we were fabulous .From that day on Ralph Coates became my hero! To be fair to Gary Sprake i believe his mother had just died so he would have been in no state to play but i doubt Revie cared much about things like that!

Only just made the game. Me and my dad sneaked out of my cousin’s wedding reception and got on just a few mins before kick off. What a performance that day.
Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
Went to that match with my brother and dad.To put that performance into context Leeds would remain unbeaten in the league for the rest of the season including a 6-1 win in the return fixture.

And if my memory serves me well that 6_1 defeat was just three days after losing the play-off semi final at the Hawthorns.thedoge wrote:Went to that match with my brother and dad.To put that performance into context Leeds would remain unbeaten in the league for the rest of the season including a 6-1 win in the return fixture.

I remember Murray as a damn good player. Not as big a name as the others in
that team, possibly, but a cracking footballer. Where did his career take him?

Was at Bury in the early 70's and a member of their team that got promotion from Div.4 in 1974. Went to a few of their home games that season, especially on Sundays during the power cuts in Jan)Feb.

How many Mothers did Sprake have? He was regularly throwing one in. Did they ever win anything with Sprake in or was it after David Harvey replaced him?clansman wrote:I really enjoyed that as it brought back so many great memories. Durham was there too, being from Skipton which had a fair number of devil worshippers (Leeds fans)
it was a great feeling walking around town with a satisfying smile on my face for weeks, I particularly remember
visiting a local chip shop, which was run by a Leeds supporter who used to gloat and tell me that I should support Leeds
and not some poor Lancashire outfit, with the biggest gloating looking face I could muster, happy days!

Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
Does seem that way doesn't it? In actual fact he was a very good keeper, a Welsh international with many caps but he did carry this reputation for occasionally 'throwing one in' which he did literally at Anfield in one fixture. Folklore has it that the song,Careless Hands sung by Des O'Connor was played over the tannoy at half time.piston broke wrote:How many Mothers did Sprake have? He was regularly throwing one in. Really? That was in the days when we regularly finished 14th out of 22. There were no complaints provided we beat one of Manure, Liverpool ,Leeds etcclaretblue wrote:'...then rode a bad tackle (take your pick, Bremner, Hunter, and Giles were all playing)...'

it is for me...I'm loving it under Mr Dyche!Down_Rover wrote:Why is that not good enough now?
I just remember that 2 month period that we 'won' every game being very uplifting.
Also following on from the Youth Cup victory the future looked very bright!

It was a very young team but with plenty of quality players in it. One of my all-time favourite Burnley home performances.

Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
I was 21 at the time and was a `team leader` with the Junior Clarets. Fortunately I was delegated to `manage` the ball boys on the cricket field end construction/demolition site. So we had an amazing view with just our heads above the hoarding behind the goal. At the end of the game we followed the teams up the old tunnel at the half way line and I clearly remember Bremner kicking a hole in the visitors dressing room door. Perhaps he would have been better kicking the ball a bit more often. Cant believe its 50 years ago today. I remember it like it was yesterday. Gotta be worth a glass or two tonight. WHAT A DAY

There's a fuller report - with some familiar words - in "The Definitive History of Leeds United: http://www.mightyleeds.co.uk/matches/19681019.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I watched the game from high up the Bee Hole terraces - the old Cricket Field having closed the previous season.
An absolutely joyous afternoon. What watching a football team is all about - and a very thrilling change from 0-4 v L'pool a little earlier.
I reckon 10th in Prem is equivalent to 14th in the old Division 1 - counting upwards from the 3 (previously 2) teams relegated at the end of the season.

I too wonder why Murray never kept up that level of performance.
I only saw the 2-0 win at QPR in the eight consecutive wins.

Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
This is probably my favourite ever Burnley game (is it really 50 years?).
The team were electric and Coates was outstanding. They could not handle the pace and strength of Kindon and Thomas's trickery. What a brilliant performance by our team that day; Casper, Dobson, et al. It was a privilege to be there.
I still have the programme from that day and will never let it go.

What would i give for a Ralph Coates at city today.
Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
Only game I ever watched from the enclosure. Abiding memory is Dave Thomas, socks around his ankles, foot on the ball, just teasing the Leeds defender before cruising past him and putting in the cross.
Brilliant.
Brilliant.

“Corps of knockers, rifles aimed at turf moor”
Some things haven’t changed in 50 years...
Great article, too young to remember this game, but I’ll be sending a linky to my Leeds friends.

Re: ARTICLE: The day the Burnley kids gave Leeds a lesson
The most unlikely footballer when you saw him but what a terrific player he became. By the time this game was played (1968) he had become undoubtedly our best player. Had the opportunity to meet him a few times, so humble too, but what a player.Cirrus_Minor wrote:What would i give for a Ralph Coates at city today.
An opportune moment to link the interview Richard Oldroyd did with him for a Clarets Mad book that didn't eventually happen.

When it was half-time and 2-1, I remember wishing it was all over. And at the end I was so glad it hadn't been.
