Bohemian Rhapsody

Post by mkmel » Thu Oct 25, 2018 4:40 pm

I watched the film last night and thought it was excellent
And the young lady next to me was quietly singing along to the classic Queen songs

Great band
Great singer
Greatest showman ,- Freddie Mercury

8/10

Went to see the film yesterday and really enjoyed it.
Rami Malek takes a brilliant part as Freddie Mercury and just to think that Sacha Baron Cohen was the original choice for the part of Freddie until he pulled out due to disagreements with the original Queen band members.

Not seen it...liked Queen in their early days, particularly the Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack albums, thought they were terrible in the later "It's a Kinda Magic" phase. From the reviews it sounds like a bit of a whitewash job aimed at the dreaded "family audience" with emphasis on Freddie Mercury's heterosexual relationship with Mary Austin. Apparently Sacha Baron Cohen was originally slated to play Mercury but baled because of this.

Will definitely see this at some point. Agree with him being up there as the beat singer in a band as there isn't really anyone that can compete with his strength, range and variety. Beat band ever though? Personally think Freddie made them as good as they were.

initially a great band, inovative and way ahead of the rest, credit due to them for being radically different.
By about second album they were dross, and they went for the big scummy wrestling anthems that plebs adore, mercury happily sold his soul and they became even more popular.
Fashionable death, and should have faded from memory, cue big business and a marketing idea, milk it for all its worth , and cash in whilst a high number of sheep are about to praise it.Same as ben elton and his lardy infestation of their success.

Listen guys, this a sugar coated version of events. Everything had to be pg rated so that producer BRIAN May came out of smelling of roses. That's why sascha was replaced. He didn't want to pander to Mays carefully controlled public image. One day when Queen are dead a proper 18 rated film will be made to tell the REAL story of debauchery

Cohen has built his so called career around debauchery that's all he seems interested in and from what I've seen of his acting they got out of jail when he pulled out...

I was a major Queen fan in my early pre-new wave teens and thought Bohemian Rhapsody about the greatest thing ever recorded . However now I can barely stand to listen to it. And anyone calling it "Bo Rap" should definitely be expunged.
Having said this there is some really good stuff on the early albums but you never hear this as mainstream radio sticks to playing Radio Ga Ga, I want to Break free, It's a Kinda Magic and other drek. If I had to name my favourite 5 tracks I would go for:
It's Late (Off the News of the World album)...a tremendous thunderous rock song
Brighton Rock
Father to Son
Death on Two Legs
March of the Black Queen

Nevermore, Lily of the Valley and Love of my Life are cure ballads too.

I’m guessing this doesn’t have Freddie being buggered off a group of sailors or have him snorting coke off a Dwarfes c0ck judging by the rating ? He was a truly great showman and up until the terrible mid/late output the band produced some fantastic material .I really wanna see this but a bit concerned it’s gonna be slightly disneyfied singalong rather than the flamboyant sex n drug crazed filthy rock n roll rollercoaster ride of debauchery that was so such a part of his life .

I'm just about old enough to vaguely remember them at Live Aid so watching this film was definitely worth doing.

Fun film but it's a bog standard 'paint by numbers' bopic/how it happened film. Very glossy

I agree with the Radio 2 review, If Rami Malek's performance had been paired with a well written script focused solely on Freddie, there's a Best Actor Oscar in there somewhere. (Think 'Ray', 'Walk The Line' etc)
The academy love a well acted boipic but this was to broad a focus and has the edges rounded off.

Interesting to read opposing views and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Going to see the film next week but maybe with the slightly biased opinion that Freddie was one of the most unique talents we'll ever see.

Of all the bands I could have, but never did see play live, Queen would be top of the list.

It’s a watchable film. Rami Malik is excellent and the stadium scenes are impressive on the big screen. However it is over-sanitised and there is far too much “artistic licence” applied to the chronology of events, particularly towards the end of the film.

Well I really enjoyed it. I nearly didnt go as the trailer made it look a bit pants but very glad I went as in my view its well worth seeing on the big screen esepecially for the Live Aid Finale. In fact it made me search out the actual Live Aid performance on You Tube this morning. I get the comments about the missed opportunity for an oscar winner, the charge that its sanitised and too much artistic licence but unless you really hate Queen I would recommend giving it a go.

Watched it last week, not a huge Queen fan but probably, like most people, happy enough to enjoy a fair few of their songs. Just remember, critics, it's a film, not a documentary about Freddie Mercury's private life.

Watched it tonight. Enjoyed it. The wembley scenes are great.

Lookalikes very good in most cases. Although Mercury looks more like a cross between mick jagger and edward scissor hands at the start. He does get his mannerisms right though.

Much better film than the massively overhyped gaga one.

A little funny in parts. Story is alright but the music scenes are really good.

Watchable film. Especially one to watch with the mrs.

So there's hints of what went on without developing it. I agree with both sides here - an enjoyable film for the sake of entertainment, but sanitized as hell at hit the audience ranking

I went to the Liverpool and London gigs in 1976 referred to at the beginning of the film, and they still rank up there in terms of production, even by today's standards

Schoolmate of mine, who dragged me to the concerts above, went on to run their fan club back in the day pre-t'internet and when things were snail mail..... and yes, there's some toe-curling stuff

I never saw Queen live other than on TV but I did see Pink Floyd at the Bingley Hall, what a terrible venue. Just a big old aircraft hanger with no seats and shocking acoustics.

Got tickets to see this with the missus tonight. Probably for the best that they edited any dwarf dick debauchery out of it to be honest - not really date night material - well not in our house anyway.
