Halloween Party this Weekend
We are having one. Anyone else having one or going to one. We've got Dracula's Bride coming and Count Dracula of course, Marley's Ghost etc. I'm going as Alice Nutter (I'm a female Claret before any one makes any wisecracks) but I live in Northumberland and none of our friends from the North East have heard of her! Presumably you lot have?
Anyway anyone else dressing up this weekend?

Re: Halloween Party this Weekend
I'm not going to dress up or celebrate particularly but I'll watch any decent horror films that they wheel out on TV.
I spotted today that they have some nice little £1 bags of seasonal sweets/nibbles in my local Co-op (pumpkin spiced brownie, gingerbread flapjack etc). I'll probably get some of those - not to give to any door knocking kids but to scoff myself.
It's a nice time for kids around where I live though, they have a dress-up party with goodies and themed games at the local Community Hall early in the evening, there seems to be a lot of excitement generated there.

Re: Halloween Party this Weekend
It's not so much celebrating more the fun of dressing up and seeing everyone's costumes and their own take on Halloween. My daughter is going to be Lagatha from the Vikings shield and sword etc. I'm not sure that's Halloween but it's fun. First time we've had a Halloween Party so we'll see. You've heard of Alice Nutter tho?

Ha ha the joys of anonymous user names on social media and the fun of Halloween. Just think of me as Alice Nutter who escaped to a remote village in Northumberland and makes no apologies for her political views on this board because I am a bit of a witch to the left wing luvvies on here!cricketfieldclarets wrote:I always thought I knew you based on username and moving to northeast. You're not or never been a firefighter then? They don't care much for Bonfire Night. I've never been s fan of Bonfire Night either on account of the accidental injuries and distress to pets. At least Halloween is harmless fun! Organised firework displays being the exception and the only kind of bonfire suitable for children.Top Claret wrote:I am in Spain and looking around the shops they have never heard of Halloween over here, thank god.

Yes I believe so. There’s a statue of her in Roughlee as well.Healeywoodclaret wrote:That's cool. Her grave is in Downham church yard isn't it?
She was a childless spinster so not directly related but it was still something that my grandma would “threaten” us with to keep us in line
Re: Halloween Party this Weekend
Bommy night was one of the highlights of the year back in the 60s. As kids we would spend weeks collecting "Bommy" wood, storing it on outside toilet rooves, raiding wood from other gangs, brilliant stuff. My birthday is 3rd Nov so I would spend all my birthday money on 144 bangers - Little Demons were 2d each, 321 Zeros were 3d each.We would cause total mayhem with those bangers.Healeywoodclaret wrote:You're not or never been a firefighter then? Yeah brought a few memories back that! Nowt like a bit of nostalgia. I remember the baked potatoes and bommy toffee. It's a wonder I've got any teeth left. But we have to agree organised events are much safer for kids.!Chobulous wrote:Bommy night was one of the highlights of the year back in the 60s. When the kids knock on the door and say 'Trick or Treat?' am I allowed to give them a trick instead, or would the parent stood at the bottom of the drive get angry when I shove a custard pie in their face or whatever?

I'm having a Halloween party this weekend in my man cave/bar
I'm pulling out my SAMCRO leather jacket (sons of anarchy)
My house is full of cobwebs and bagged up dead bodies
I haven't seen the Mrs for couple days....

Yes, I know. Her wealth/status and religion was the reason why some people held a vendetta against the family and why she was maliciously accused, however, like I said, Alice Nutter is not buried in the churchyard.Healeywoodclaret wrote:If you Google her apparently she came from a wealthy family and was a landowner.

Am halfway through Daughters of witching hill by Mary Sharratt. Really well written and paints quite a different picture of the goings on.

Yes there's a Nutter family grave in Newchurch.
Alice Nutter, thee Alice Nutter who was convicted and executed for witchcraft in 1612, isn't buried there. Just think about it for a moment. Do you really believe that her family would have been able to obtain her body from Gallows Hill in Lancaster? There would be historic records if someone had unlawfully taken the body of a 'witch' from the gallows. Also, the body of a 'witch' would not have been allowed to rest in consecrated ground. There would have been an uproar and the king would most surely have been petitioned - there'd be historic records of this, but there isn't, because it never happened. BTW: There's also a Billy Balfour grave there too, but this doesn't mean I died in 1704.
