Re: Spurs after Pope?
Would certainly make sense to me. Lloris has been shaky for a while now, and Pochettino has shown he's willing to give English players a chance. Pope definitely won't be willing to sit on the bench for us that's for sure.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
I like the picture of SD in that piece, on the question of Pope I expect there are lots of clubs also looking at our keepers.
Nice to have some of our players in demand by the bigger clubs puts us in a strong bargaining position Should we need to do some juggling in the transfer market.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Times saying it has interview with Joe Hart on Friday (not available just yet) - Joe wants his England place back.
Would any buying club offer more for Joe Hart (75 caps, etc etc etc) or Nick Pope? Which one would fit more easily into Burnley's wage structure?
Be interesting to see who our goalkeepers are at the end of the season - and the start of 2019/20.

Lloris f*cks up in the Champions League and a day later there’s an article about Pope interest. Makes sense.
They should be interested, but that article is almost certainly pure assumption.

Done Deal at £17m + add ons ( £8.5m up front + then 4 X £2.125m ( + £350k/£750k if Spurs qualify for Champs League in 18/19 and 19/20 ) spread over the next 2 years ), an extra £1m after 25 1st Team games, including bench sitting, and £500,000 for each extra 25 until 100, when it ceases. £75,000 for each England game ( starting or bench-sitting ) for the first three years, then ceases. Offer him the number one spot at Burnley, which is where many of us would love to see him, then I think he’d be more than happy to stay here.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Personally think any offer over £25m we would be foolish not to consider.
Last season he was great for us. Unexpectedly so. But the reality is selling Pope could make real sense.
Firstly we have Joe Hart. An outstanding keeper, worth far more than we got for him. He has been MOM in almost all of our games thus far.
Secondly Pope is still relatively untested. Great season last year. But so was Wood. Would we be doing any better with Pope than Hart? I am not convinced we would.
Thirdly he is not THAT young. He is 27 this year. A good age for a keeper. But he is still fairly inexperienced, especially at this level and especially for his age.
Finally its obvious we have to sell at least one of our keepers. Pope would command the most despite the fact he is the least proven.
I like Pope. I like Heaton. But if a big offer came in for either I would take it.

The only person who negotiated the Trippier deal was “our Kieron” - well reported that it was a condition of him agreeing to stay with us that we include the buy out clause at £3.5m.

Pope is by far the best of our keepers...and also the youngest.
And that’s why Spurs want to buy him and not Hart or Heaton.
Anything less than £35m and we should say no. Pickford went for £30m a couple of years ago and without checking I think he had less England appearances than Pope.
Given the price paid for the Liverpool and Chelsea keepers this summer £35m looks about fair for what many people agreed was one of the top 3 keepers in the league last season.

They have about the same amount of experience (pope now and Pickford then) but Pope is 4 years older than what Pickford was.
And there is no evidence to suggest Pope is far better than Heaton or Hart other than his one outstanding season for us.
Re: Spurs after Pope?
Pope's terrible with his feet though, which is a massive issue for the top sides because they all want to play out from the back and to do that you need a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Just reading back through this thread has amused me.
At the start of last season we were all saying we only had one decent keeper and would be screwed if anything happened to him. Now we are arguing over who is the best of our three top class keepers and have Lindergaard as well who I would happily have on the bench if we were without 2 of the 3.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Think far too much is made of this. I cannot recall one goal Pope cost us by making a mistake with his feet. Pickford, Butland and Hart all made mistakes last season with their kicking which led directly to goals. And Lloris has had a few aswell.jrgbfc wrote:Pope's terrible with his feet though, which is a massive issue for the top sides because they all want to play out from the back and to do that you need a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet.
I know it’s becoming a more important aspect of the game but it will never be as important as what you can do to stop shots - ask Bravo at City how it worked out for him being good with his feet and having the worst shot stopping record in the league. That was £30m well spent !

Pickford cost £30m and the market has moved on since then. Pickford being younger is not relevant as they are both young for a keeper. Pope had a far better season in the league with a much better record than Pickford did in the season before he was bought.cricketfieldclarets wrote:£25m is a bout right based on Pickford tbh.

As for evidence that he is a better keeper - you maybe right but this is an opinion. But to be fair it’s an opinion that is based on how Pope performed last season which was better than Hart last year (and this year IMHO).
I think Heaton in the season before was actually better than Pope last season. I think Tom was the best keeper in the league by far that year. But from the little we have seen of him since the injury and the way Pope played last year he has the edge if he comes back fit...,and the biggest one factor is how he commands his area which if he can do again puts him as the best at doing this in the league now Courtois has gone.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Age is always a huge factor in a valuation, the older the player, the fewer remaining playing seasons. Yes keepers play longer but compared to the Pickford transfer Pope will come with three seasons fewer playing time assuming they both play until the same age.TVC15 wrote:Pickford cost £30m and the market has moved on since then. Also factor in sell on, Pickford could have two more amazing seasons at Everton then get an even bigger offer to a top 6 team or Europe and still only be as old as Pope is now.

Pickford was bought a couple of years ago for £30m. He had little experience and Sunderland were desperate for cash. Pope has had a better season in Premier League than Pickford did for Sunderland, been capped for England and the market has definitely gone up in terms of transfer fees since then.
If you are 23 or 26 / 27 I do not see any difference in transfer fees amongst keepers or other outfield players to be honest. Not sure there is any evidence of 23 year olds going for more money than 27 year olds - being young tends to mean you are unproven for less seasons so any age benefit is cancelled out by 27 year olds having more experience and buying someone at the peak age of the career. Majority of transfers in our league seem to be for the here and now....not the long term future. Look at the sh-ite Moaningrhino has signed...all about the next couple of years whilst he is manager.

Ask Spurs fans about Hugo's kicking apart from the 10 yard sideways passes.

Re: Spurs after Pope?
Spurs don’t play it out of the back any less or more than we do. We do not lump it up from the keeper every time either. Tarks and Mee always look for the short ball and if it’s on we give it to them (then one of them lump it !!)jrgbfc wrote:Only because at Burnley we keep it simple and make no attempt to play out from the back. As I said how many mistakes has Pope made ? Plenty of time he has to come out of his goal and clear the ball and he has not given a goal away doing this - and lots of other keepers have.
You seen Peter Chec play this year ?

Popes kicking ain’t in the league of HL for sure .Lloris is a great keeper though and I’d say the best sweeper in world football along with Neur . He does have the odd howler in him though ( but who doesn’t ?) popes ability for the high ball and very few errors is a big plus plus though and his leg saves ain’t far off De Gea ( imo) He could “ do a Tripps” bide his time work hard and who knows. As for value 15-20m tops , for a keeper who only played half a season for us I can’t see no 30m figures at all

Must say also that Pope is a decent sweeper
Re: Spurs after Pope?
Pope this the keeper to retain.
Re: Spurs after Pope?
Maybe the intention is for Hart to just have a good season with us to put himself in the shop window and then move on, with Pope becoming our main man again.
