Smallest Burnley Team

Post by gtclaret » Fri Oct 26, 2018 8:15 pm

I was bored, so I picked a Team of vertically challenged players who played for Burnley. They must have played in the position I have selected, but not necessarily for Burnley. Here goes
Harry Thompson
Back 4 Peter Leabrook, Frank Sinclair, Chris Brass, Dean West
Midfield _Billy Ingham, Brian O'Neil, Brian Flynn (captain)
Ralph Coates
Forward_Adrian Heath, Robbie Blake
Can anyone do better

I am not sure if he was smaller than Thompson, but I know who was better

Dean West was a right-back.

Put Joe Jakub in his place.

If he did, it can't have been particularly memorable. :(

I think the shortest player I've seen playing for Burnley was Johnny Price at 5ft 4ins, a left winger from the 60's.

By coincidence I saw Micky Finn this very afternoon and can confirm he is definitely shorter than Harry Thomson.

Our forward line in the late 50s was Doug Newlands, Mac Peter McKay Albert Cheeseborough and Brian Pilkington not one of them anywhere near 6ft.

That is why we were the first team to use a short corner.

Indeed, winsomyen. In fact Dougie Newlands was probably the tallest of those five at 5ft 8ins.

I dont think in our division 1 winning side 1959 we only had Jimmy Robson who stood at 6 ft.

Thinking about the great spurs side of the early 60s I can only think of Bobby Smith who was in the region of 6 ft.

As said. Price, Finn and Hoskins were all smaller than players, in their positions, in the OPs X1.

David Johnson?

If so, I think it was early 2000's.

Very easy to forget Micky Finn unless you’d seen him and you’d need binoculars.

That player Chippendale we had in the dark dark days . I think he was described as a diminutive winger.

I was talking to Junior Bent in the pub in Preston last night he’s a coach for the Knobbers.

Says he gets more recognition from Burnley then he ever does for Brissle

Odd that , he was only on loan for a month or two and never really did much, wasn't a great team to play in at the time. Remember him more from his Huddersfield days.

I saw him make his debut away at Upton Park in a midweek game that finished 1-1 and Little Johnny Price was amazing in that game running rings around Bobby Moore and others. Never saw anything like it from a young JP remember thinking he’s going to a good player but was not to be as he went to Stinkport County eventually. After his playing days were up he managed a pub in Stinkport where he died around his 50’s.

Stuart Robertson, played in the 1970's. The ball always looked too big for him to kick.

My dad told me that the forward line in the late forties was so short (excluding Harry Potts) that we invented the short corner, no one had done this before.

That would be the match where we had a goal disallowed for him being offside and he was out on his wing totally disinterested. No “not interfering with play” back then.
