It's not affected me either. But that's missing the point. I'd prefer to live in a world where we didn't destroy everything we touch.
The palm oil industry could realistically wipe out the Orangutan in the next few years. It wouldn't change my life whatsoever on a day to day basis, but I'd be gutted that a wonderful, unique, intelligent species would be gone forever.
Climate change has wiped out 80% of the Great Barrier Reef in the last 5 years. If you go diving there off Queensland nowadays all you see is acres of bleached white dead coral where a colourful, beautiful and biodiverse ecosystem once was. A crying shame.

We need to switch from a global economic growth model to a localized 'ebeneezer good in one's own country' economic model on a nationalize and rationalize production of all things, rather than follow a myth of consumer choice where everything is crap but in many different variations. The Age of Conceit is literally a junk era. There is a form race as much as a space race, I'm working on contextualizing it via describing a transcendental structure, whether discovered or invented.

Maybe not directly but we have almost certainly lost forever plants and microbiomes that could of cured many diseases, including some cancers.Has the loss of any one of those species noticeably affected you? No, nor me.
It's scary to think that 150-200 species of plants, insects, birds and mammals become extinct every 24 hours but to be honest I gave up on the planet a few years back.

If we keep losing the Honeybee in the numbers we currently are then we could face crop failures and food shortages that only the ancient Egyptians and Project Fear could dream about. (Someone had to get Brexit mentioned on this thread somehow )

Few years back I was seriously considering permaculture and doing talks voluntarily to make make people aware of how we are affecting the planet, re climate change tipping points etc, when the realisation of ‘we’re ******’ happened. But I wanted a job and a nice car that everyone else is entitled to, and got it.
I have fully accepted that we are screwed no matter what.

Why? You haven’t answered the question I posed, and that was all I did. I didn’t offer an opinion or state facts (apart from saying their loss hasn’t affected me) I asked a question you haven’t answered so don’t be so high and mighty.Taffy on the wing wrote:Disgusting, self centered comments like this......are not helpful or funny.

Re: Humans have wiped out 60% of animals since 1970
Well the thread is based upon an article you clearly haven't read, so first off your answer is in there. There is a difference between "every one of us" and us as a collective species. The planet will naturally "die" yes, when it's engulfed by the Sun as it expands in about 4 billion years. But what has that got to do with anything that's in the article? In one sentence you've managed to misunderstood the whole problem, perhaps consciously to get a rise. Coupled with the above comment about a supposed evolutionary will, amongst others, and it's pretty clear a lot of people don't see a problem that's staring us in the face either via a lack of knowledge or interest. I find both worrying. And that's not to say I know a lot or behave in a way that's exemplary, I'm part of the problem too.BennyD wrote:You are right, every one of us going to die and, one day, the planet will too. What’s your point?
It's a big leap mentally to make, chomping away on a McDonalds hamburger and connecting it to mass cattle farming. Where do they find the land to rear the beef? What do they feed the cattle on, how do they grow that feed, and where? What lived on that land before it was farmland? What impact did that have on the ecosystem? Billions of burgers later, from one fast food giant, and you have one tiny singular example.
Our behaviour might not affect you personally, but it does affect our species and nearly every other. We seem to be miles away from making any meaningful compromises in our lives for the betterment of everyone and everything.
