Rooney's last cap ....
What do you all think of the plan to give Wayne Rooney a final few minutes and a final Cap, during the friendly against the USA ?
An appropriate tribute to a genuine 3 Lions legend, or the ridiculous cheapening of the value of an International Cap for a player who won nothing in an England shirt ?

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
Ridiculous. And I'm not saying that because he's a 5 star dickhead, it's because, it's ridiculous. Caps should be given out on merit.

It's a perfect opportunity to play our promising youngsters. Rooney has had his day and should be man enough to refuse the offer on both counts.

The game is supposed to raise over £500,000 for childrens charities but your right its cheapening a meaningless friendly.

In my humble view, and as with the agreement of our opponents, the FA should have arranged a guard of honour from the two teams, and the " Man of the hour " should have performed a ceremonial kick-off, and retired gracefully to the Stands to a standing ovation, job done !

it's for Charity and him playing will undoubtedly put bums on seats. Anyone who has an ounce of a problem with this must have a pretty perfect life

Him playing for England isn't the problem. Raising money for charity is of couse brilliant. But he shouldn't receive a cap for it. That's what you're missing. It's not Christmas. Caps shouldn't be given out as gifts.

I suppose the best option whilst playing Rooney to boost the money raised would be to give no caps, sort of downgrade the match status.

I'm not missing it at all, your missing the point that if Rooney puts 5000 more bums on seats and that helps 1 person or 100 people then I couldn't give a toss if they give a cap, a trophy and an autographed shirt. Greater good is far more important than if Rooney has 119 or 120 after his name, so my point remains, if this is all a person has to complain about then they must have a ******* epic lifeFactualFrank wrote:So basically, "Agree with me, or be wrong".

I already said him playing for England is fine. The point isn't him actually playing for England, it's the fact he's receiving another cap for it. He shouldn't be given a cap. There's an argument that a cap shouldn't even be awarded for friendlies anyway.

So, a Richard Branson type rocks up ..... " My son always wanted to play professional football, and is currently playing for Chesterfield in the Conference " I'll donate £ 6m to this very worthy cause, if my son gets 6 minutes playing for England " ... Should he play because of the greater good ?? Of course not !Vegas Claret wrote:I'm not missing it at all, your missing the point that if Rooney puts 5000 more bums on seats and that helps 1 person or 100 people then I couldn't give a toss if they give a cap, a trophy and an autographed shirt. No, I answered that above, very very clearly Frank.FactualFrank wrote:So you have missed the point.

The fact you are putting a poxy England cap above the welfare of other less fortunate human beings tells me all I need to know

Raising money for charity = brilliant.
Playing for England again = no problem, it's a friendly, afterall
Receiving another cap = no
Now you're either thick, or you're pretending to be thick. You have 2 options - choose one.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
It's a friendly, it's irrelevant. I'll ask you the same question - would you rather someone give 6 million quid to have someone play in a mickey mouse game but it saves a dozen lives or would you rather just have those dozen people die ?Clarets4me wrote:So, a Richard Branson type rocks up ..... I know which I'd prefer, we all complain that football players are loaded and they give nothing back and when the opportunity arrives people are bitching that they get caps for it.
Wonder how many of you burst into tears when you didn't get a gold star at school ?

not being thick, completely understand your point - you are missing mine though. Why does a person receiving a cap at the cost of saving peoples lives upset you so much ? It's a nothing game, giving them a cap or not doesn't make a difference to the person in hospital requiring treatment, no idea why it makes a difference to you ?FactualFrank wrote:I must be typing Chinese, if you don't get the point. Pretty straight forward VC frank is saying its all about the cap. As in everything else is fine he just shouldn't be awarded the cap as hes not playing due to Southgate selecting him due to his performances. I tend to agree.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
It doesn't upset me. I'm chilled out watching the snooker. A cap is a big thing for international footballers. What should happen is he plays, raises loads of money for charity, but the cap isn't added to his career stats.

What are Southgate's views on this? I'd imagine he wouldn't be keen as he's been very proactive about phasing out the old guard.

In my view it's wrong and devalues playing for England.

Yeah well aware of that and 100% understand his point, I just think when a persons life is at stake then it's far more important than if a player gets a cap - it pales into insignificance.DustyBawls wrote:Pretty straight forward VC frank is saying its all about the cap. Anyway, I'm gonna watch the footy now
Re: Rooney's last cap ....
His last cap was a flat rubber thing the shape of his head with hairs attached to it,some people actually call them wigs. Anyway he had a hair transplant so the "cap " is now back in the wardrobe.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
I don't see a problem with it. First and foremost it's for a fabulous cause.
Next thing, whilst he is no doubt playing in an inferior league against lesser opposition, he's been playing 90 minutes every week, scoring goals and creating numerous chances for others.
It's not like he's being wheeled out from round the pool in Dubai after retiring from playing completely.
Not many other front men, other than Callum Wilson are pushing themselves forwards for a place in the team/squad to compete with Kane are they?
The American team will be littered with players from MLS, which, with the added interest of Rooney playing will guarantee a full house at Wembley and hopefully a better atmosphere than of late.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
My last word as it might be a generational thing ...... I'm 54, and an International Cap used to mean you were probably the best available player in your Country to play in that game on that day. This counted for a lot ...
I played to a reasonable standard of Rugby Union and turned out with & against various current, past, and future Internationals .... Wade Dooley, Will Carling, Bob Kimmins, Jim Sydall, David Sole, Jonathan Webb, Will Greenwood & Jock Hobbs amongst others and always felt it to be an honour to play against them ...
I can see the Charity angle, but still, it just doesn't sit well with me ..... that said, it'd be a dull old world if we all thought the same !!

It'll feel a bit like one of those charity do's with Olly Murs and Paddy McGuiness.
Maybe this is the future for friendlies that aren't even Nations League games. Does anyone still watch these games anyway?

David Nugent got an England cap so I’ve no problem with England’s all time leading goal scorer earning another.
Besides, he’s still better than half the squad anyway.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
Misuse of a football match.
In the old days, a match given charity status might be kicked off by a Royal/Celebrity/Firmer player of note etc. They did not get a cap for it!
To think of players like Jimmy Adamson, who never got a cap...and then you are offered this.
Poor.

Re: Rooney's last cap ....
I guess Rooney will only play a small part in proceedings anyway,so it shouldn't affect preparations for the rest of the squad.
Welbeck injured tonight in the Arsenal game,so he will be out of the squad now.
