Britain is not a country ....
The United Kingdom is however...
You will carry a United Kingdom Passport....as in
United Kingdom
Country in Europe
The United Kingdom, made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, is an island nation in northwestern Europe. England – birthplace of Shakespeare and The Beatles – is home to the capital, London, a globally influential centre of finance and culture.
Britain as in the British Isles also covers the Republic of Ireland... and is not a country recognised by the United Nations as a Whole but "The United Kingdom" is

HiroshimaClaret wrote:Is this a wind-up? `British` is NOT a country - it`s a nationality.
Settle and Yorkshire - clearly meant and taken in jest.
What the heck is nationality then?
Nationality: 'the status of belonging to a particular nation'.
Nation: 'a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory'.
I suspect I am debating with Sociologists here, who define everything differently to the rest of Society.
I still await the definition of a Country, that does not include having it's own Government!
I still cannot see how England is a Country, it does not have it's own Government.
It is in fact governed from London, by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.(i.e. the UK).
Not the Government of England.

Yes, it is a country, one of the four making up the UK. It is not, however, a sovereign state.2 Bee Holed wrote:So is England a Country despite it not having a Government?

I carry a British Passport issued by the United Kingdom Passport Authority.
I am a British Citizen, it tells me so in my passport.
Your definition of Britain is plain wrong.
Britain is the main/large island comprising England, Scotland and Wales.
The British Isles are completely different and include many islands, some governed by Westminster and others not.

Oh no...Spades joining in now too!
At some point, somebody will agree that a Country must have a Government.
So perhaps those living in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, should answer the original question by saying,
I live in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I suppose that would be correct, however, I say I am British, it's easier than that mouthful! It's also probably more accurate then saying England!

If you'd have said 'I live in Britain' then nobody would have said owt.
However you said 'I am British' which did not answer the question.

No, I suspect the idea of being 'British' is becoming unfashionable and my bringing it up has stirred a hornets nest.

you don't live in Britain, there is no such place on earth, the universe.
You can live in Great Britain which is separate from Northern Island but both form part of the UK (United Kingdom)
Please don't forget you are Great
Living in the USA is always fun, when asked where I lived by a women, when I replied the UK am British, she signed shook her head and said I could have sworn you from England, errrrrr, was my reply before bursting in to laughter.
In addition from a well educated, so I thought women who told me she had been on a tour of Europe, she rattled of France/Paris/French - Italy/Rome/Italian, when she got to the UK/London she was disappointed to find out we did not have our own language!!

Please don't forget you are Great
proper noun
The island containing England, Wales, and Scotland. The name is broadly synonymous with Great Britain, but the longer form is more usual for the political unit. See also Great Britain, United Kingdom.
Though I've had enough now KateR.
To be frank, I don't know where I live anymore and actually I am no longer sure I care!
Re: What country do you live in?
you stated yourself what your passport says and therefore it is where you live, taking a single word out of the eight will never do
Was only trying to remind you not only of where you live but your heritage, you have "Great'ness in you my boy, be proud, shout it from the rooftops
