I remember that. Back when shirts were £45 because £40 of it was made up by the amount of material used, and when they were unwanted you could donate them to an impoverished family in Africa to use as a tent.cricketfieldclarets wrote:These days are long gone.

Sterlings talent was never an issue
His consistency was blew hot and cold now Peps got him at the top of his gamw.Having a squad of 25 top players helps it increases pressure on anyone who falls short.Except apparently cheat Kompany

The guy tripped but it’s a witch hunt because it’s Sterling. If a Burnley did this for a penalty nobody would bat an eyelid. He’s a scapegoat for everything in the media, I notice nobody will mention the absolute worldie that he scored either.

For goodness sake leave the lad alone. He tripped up, it's not his fault the ref gave a penalty. One of the best English talents we have. Incidentally wasn't the ref the same one who officiated one of our home European games (can't remember who we played) he was a character.

It looks like a trip, but he has such a patchy record for his sportsmanship, that his reputation has gone before him on this.

He apologised to the ref and Shakhtar straight after the game and reiterated he didn’t appeal or ask for a pen for it. Shocking character.

Re: Oh my god, Sterling!!
Two sides to this, it wasn't a pen and Sterling knew it wasn't, but he didn't appeal for it and it was given. When you step up to take a pen, as a Pro you don't want to miss it. If it had been me in a CL game I'd have blasted it! As would most anyone else.
On the other hand City were already cruising. Missing the pen would have made no difference. You might say that simply rolling it to the keeper would be disrespectful to the officials. The ref made a decision and Players often get in trouble (or yellow carded) for disputing the Referee's decision. The Ref has to stand by what he decides as do the players, good or bad.
Overall I do think perhaps Sterling might have said something, but 99% of players probably wouldn't have. The fact that Pep told the 4th official that it was a trip absolves Sterling and City from any blame on this.
The Ref however needs a serious talking to! If this was a disgrace then it was clearly the Ref's disgrace, not the players.

Sorry mate, I was in a sh!te mood when I got in work and decided to play Mr Angry of Accrington. Actually I only saw it this morning after I posted and if I had seen it before I would have known you couldn't have been serious. At least he had the courage to own up but it begs the question as to why a player who has obviously not been fouled can't go to the ref and say 'sorry mate, I fell'. It would be a refreshing case of honesty but the hope of ever seeing that is, I suppose, very slim.Rileybobs wrote:I was joking.

Re: Sterling trips and gets awarded a penalty
Only saw the clip recently.
Although it wasn't a dive, ( he tripped himself up accidentally) and he doesn't appear to claim for a penalty he doesn't protest to the ref that it wasn't a pen either.
Apparently there wouldn't have been any point disclaiming it as "refs never change their minds"
If Sterling was a fair sportsman he could have tried (didn't stop Robbie Fowler once trying to disclaim a penalty wrongly awarded in his favour against Arsenal when he knew he hadn't been fouled)

£1.2m a month and the clumsy galhoot falls over his own feet. The ref allegedly had 6-0 on the fixed odds
Re: Sterling trips and gets awarded a penalty
The annoying thing for me is the media saying it doesn't matter because they won 6 nil. You can probably argue that if it's the 5th or 6th goal but not the 2nd. The penalty gave them daylight in the game, same as the appalling 2nd against us the other week.
They're playing to different rules these days and it's a shame. The benefit of the doubt goes with them 90% of the time and it's becoming more and more difficult to give them a game because of it.

Spot on, it's crucial when it's the second. Difference last night I suppose is they shouldn't have been playing with ten men after 30 seconds.jlup1980 wrote:The annoying thing for me is the media saying it doesn't matter because they won 6 nil. Do you think Sam Vokes should have told the referee when he punched the ball in against Southampton a couple of years ago ? It’s funny I can’t remember a similar outrage on this board back then - and Sam did it deliberately !Vintage Claret wrote:Only saw the clip recently.

I think what Robbie Fowler did was the exception to the rule. It would be lovely if all players did this but in reality if they receive a bit of good fortune through the incompetence of officials then they take it - and that includes our players.

Amazing that we haven't had a penalty for a gazillion years and City get one like this.
I hope we are practising kicking the ground as we speak Just get Vokes to run in to Leicesters box (ball not even required) kick the ground, fall over - penalty guaranteed.

Although he didn't appeal, neither did he protest it was not penalty. Back in the day the ball would have been trickled to the keeper or blasted wide.
Robbie Fowler was the last player I saw 'give the ball back' when he was facing Seaman and must have given him a signal.

I think Sterling shines in a stellar Team, but sinks in an ordinary one. True World Class talent lifts an ordinary team. He’s good, I’ll grant you, but to call him World Class devalues the meaning of that word for true World Class talent.

Plus Sterling had a decent World Cup IMHO.
This season he is up there with Hazard as the best player in the Premier League / Europe. If he keeps this up for the season he has got to be world class (or very close to)

That's not what happened though. Fowler said he tried to score the penalty, Seaman saved it and McAteer (I think) scored the rebound. For all the talk of how Fowler did the right thing Liverpool still scored.JohnMac wrote:Although he didn't appeal, neither did he protest it was not penalty. He was by many accounts the best player on the pitch on Wednesday night, evidenced by that brilliant goal that he scored.Lord Beamish wrote:But you said that the Champion’s s League was better than the World Cup. Surely, if he was Workd Class, he’d have shone in it.

True World Class talent usually doesn’t play in an “ordinary” team in the first place. How many world class players can you name that don’t play for world class teams? Sterling is one of Guardiola’s key players and one of the first names on the team sheet in this stellar team you speak of. Hence why City are set to shell out 300k per week to keep the likes of Real Madrid from taking him.
There’s no devaluation in calling one of the best players, in the Premier League’s best team, who has produced fantastic numbers and influence during that time, “world class”. Too many people don’t want to believe it, because it’s Raheem Sterling.

The worse this game gets the less I want to watch it.
I didn’t watch England at the World Cup as the antics of Alli at the turf put me right off watching/supporting him.
