Your team v Leicester

4-1-4-1 for me

with Westwood--Defour--Hendrick

OR Westwood--Defour--Cork

staying 'anchored' in central midfield.

JBG and Brady with fluid roles between wing and number 10 position.

Could play Barnes or Vokes or Wood as centre forward - not much to choose between them at the moment.

-------------Heaton
Lowton---Tarks---Mee---Taylor
-------------Defour
JBG--Westwood--Hendrick--Brady
-------------Vokes

With Tarky out we don't have much choice at the back so I'd go:

Heaton (Hart out just for his new dodgy tattoo)

Taylor Mee Long Lowton

Cork Defour
Brady Vydra JBG

Vokes

Really, really tough this. I'm assuming though that Cork is fit. If not, Westwood would come in. Ditto, if Tarks isn't fit, Long comes in.

------Hart
Bardsley Tarks Mee Taylor
Lennon Cork Hendrick JBG
------------Brady
------------Barnes

The obvious casualty here is Defour, who wouldn't even come in if Cork is out for me. He's been well of the pace in the two games I've seen him in (admittedly, top sides) and the highlights last week suggested he was similarly chasing shadows at West Ham. Leicester are a team packed with pace and power which suggests a similar problem is possible. I'd give him a breather, making sure he's ready for the Newcastle and Palace games, when he really will become important to us.

Meanwhile, we simply have to get more athleticism into midfield, so Hendrick would be the first name onto the sheet for me (reflecting his performances this season when played in that role). You can make a decent case that even if Cork is fit, Westwood should get the nod - another assist last week (albeit in what sounds like an otherwise lamentable performance) to go with previous assists against Bournemouth and Cardiff shouldn't be overlooked. Indeed, Westwood and Hendrick is the only central 2 I've seen look like a 2 this season and whenever they've previously played together they've brought the best out of each other.

We do need Brady's creativity in Defour's absence, but by playing him in the "number 10" role (where he's played for Ireland), his rustiness off the ball shouldn't be so badly exposed (we've tried Defour in this role once - ironically at Leicester 2 years ago - and it went badly).

Up top, you can make a good argument for all of Barnes, Wood and Vokes. Vokes has generally been good this season, but away from home there's a worry he's too static to make the most of the sort of ball we often force him to live off, whilst Wood doesn't always prosper with his back to goal, so Barnes may be the man.

Tricky one this is but for me:

Hart
Lowton Mee Long Taylor
JBG Defour, Cork (or Hendrick) Brady
Vydra, Wood

I feel we need to give Vydra a start alongside Wood but
I'm far from certain Dyche will think the same.

Woever does start it's going to be a difficult game to get much out of
as Leicester will certainly be up for this one.
A much improved performance and no injuries will suffice for me
even if we lose.

Lowton

Mee
Long
Defour
Cork
Hendrick
Brady
JBG
Wood

Defour always looks better in a midfield 3 and Brady and JBG have the ability to defend and get forward to support Wood.

My apologies, I didn’t realize Pope was back in training. In that case, he’ll warm the bench in case Hart happens to put a hair out of place

As for Tarky and Ward, my bad, I forgot they had ‘ouchies’. I didn’t include Gibson, as I know he recently underwent surgery.

In any case, I think you get the gist for my team selection

I knew Maguire was doubtful didn't realise Maddison wouldn't feature, the most important aspect is not to gift stupid goals,if we can stay in the game a chance will come to nick a goal

Hart
Lowton Long Mee Taylor
Jbg Westwood Defour Brady
Wood Vydra

Lennon and Vokes are useful options from the bench.

We have to give Leicester some defending to think about,if we allow wave after wave of attacks eventually we'll get drowned.

Sadly can only see a 2-0 reverse here.

Difficult as always to find fault with your logic but I`m plumping for...

Hart (would be tempted with Heaton but not going to happen)

Lowton Long Mee Taylor

Hendrick Defour Westwood (think this combo will get the best out of Defour at the mo)

Gudmundsson Brady

Wood (interested to see how he would play will a slightly narrower Brady)

I would watch this team and have some hope of actual attacking intent.

p.s. have just seen that Maguire and Maddison are lilkely to be absent for Leicester - has to be very good news.

Completely forgot about McNeil. What`s the situation there??? Did he do something naughty with Vydra? :o He looked a real prospect and had a cracking left peg on him if a little lacking in strength and pace (in my limited opinion of watching him).

Again, very difficult to disagree with. The goalkeeper situation is a really tricky one and if people say it isn`t, I think they are wrong. There COULD be an issue with communication. Our players are very much set in the Dyche way of things and that may include how we set up to `channel` teams into specific shooting areas. It helped incredibly that added to that tactic last season was Pope`s fantastic authority in the box. Take away that and add a keeper in Hart (who has made some excellent saves) who maybe does struggle to be part of a Dyche defensive unit, then it NOT folly to suggest Heaton should return. It would seem on the surface incredibly unfair on Hart, but we ARE shipping goals for fun.

Not too many choosing Lennon - but I’d be amazed if he was dropped even though it’s obvious that Brady should start

Don't want to sound negative but no matter what team we put out will not be good enough to get anything here, even forgetting the occasion which will make it doubly hard

The trouble with this is that it doesn't deal with the opposition full backs. One of our problems recently - as observed by Carragher, amongst others - is that at times our full backs appear to be having to defend wider, so the back 4 is not as narrow. Changing the shape so that we either have no wide midfielders, or have wide midfielders given a more attacking brief, would appear to exacerbate this problem not solve it. Fair enough, if we were confident we could get enough ball to control the centre of midfield and stop Leicester working it wide and bring their full backs in particular into the attack - but does anyone seriously think this is likely? Even as a successful team, we've had to absorb pressure from more athletic and technically talented teams at times.

Dyche has never relaxed his expectation that the wide midfielders work the entire length of the pitch, and I can't imagine he'll start now.

Hart

Bardsley - let's forego the attacking outlet. Desperately need to tighten up. Lowton has been out of form for several weeks.
Long
Mee
Taylor

JBG - to get forward in support of Vokes
Cork
Westwood
Hendrick - played as a CM
Brady - see JBG

Vokes - difficult call but as a starting option Sam offers more in both boxes.

Vydra for one of the CMs if we need to change the shape to 4-4-2 later in the game. Vokes/Barnes/Wood inter-changeable

In the unlikely event that we are trying to see the game out introduce Defour for improved ball retention/passing accuracy.

You`re right, it won`t happen - I`d just like to see it. I honestly think, especially this season, when we are not playing the Top 6, we need to give the opposition something to think about. We have to get away from this notion that we have to stop the opposition playing their game. It seems the go to at the moment and it is NOT working. We also have to take into account that without (apparently) Maddison and Maguire they are significantly weakened so let`s have a bloody go at them.

My team, unlike many of Dyche`s recent outings, has flexibility as an option, within its framework. If their fullbacks are causing trouble, then very well, change the defensive shape to a 4-4-1-1. Can we PLEASE though look at least interested in holding onto the ball and playing it through the team rather than the ole Ray Deakin tactic which we have been going to.

I`m frankly bored watching us at the moment - there`s nothing to get me conversing with the PC screen. My wife, not once, this season has told me to shut up, whilst watching from midnight. NOT ONCE. Last season it was an all too common occurrence meaning we actually were doing something right. We certainly are NOT this season.

You might be right, claretspice, and my ideas may all be pure fantasy, but if we cannot make the best use of the likes of Defour, Brady, GUdmundsson and Vydra (all players who have the ability to maintain possession of the ball) against the `lesser lights`, then we might as well just accept the inevitable. ALL OPINION!

Whatever tam he puts out, let`s just hope they do us proud and get my wife hurling some abuse at me around 1:30am tomorrow.

COME ON BURNLEY!

You`re spot on. A midfield 2 has been scary this season. Let`s just hope Cork (if played) can hit the ground running and IF he goes for the 5 `in midfield`, there`s a fluency and flexibility to it all.
