It's a "Festival"? Strange choice of terminology for such a solemn occasion.

I think in recent times there has been a move to 'celebrate' occasions like this. A bit like funerals also. The lives of those who gave them did so in order for us to have the freedom we have today.
I am not saying I agree with it per se but maybe the sentiment is that we are 'celebrating' these guys in our hearts and minds but we still respect the life they went through.

The first "festival" of remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall was in 1923 and was simply called "in Memory 1914-1918". It was named festival in 1927. It was obviously named "Festival" by people that fought in the great war, not something we should change. If we did change it would probably be something horrible and Americanised or pc.ontario claret wrote:It's a "Festival"? Strange choice of terminology for such a solemn occasion.

My grandmother's only brother was killed in the First World War. I can't say for sure, but I think that he would be very amused to find out that they're holding a festival in his honour.
