Calum Wilson England class?
Not in this lifetime.Poor first touch and looks totally out of his depth file under Tammy Abraham .

It says more about the current state of our game more than it does his ability.
Caps are handed out like confetti now a days. With all the friendlies and dead rubbers about, you only need half a dozen average premier league displays ( sometimes not even that) and your in the squad, and usually get a cap!

Re: Calum Wilson England class?
Just notched.
I thinks he's done ok, makes a change for us to have a striker with a bit of pace and quick of the mark.
He's been in good form for the last couple of seasons now to be fair to him

A goal on his debut. Flying in the league.
A late bloomer. But so was Ian Wright. Jamie Vardy. And plenty more.
Nowt like getting behind him...

Solid debut and has scored more goals in one England game than Juke scored in his whole Burnley career

He’s a good player. Superb signing from Coventry. Makes very intelligent runs and works the top half of the pitch relentlessly. Would love him at Burnley. Done so well to recover from two huge injuries.

English strikers who have played at least 3 PL games this season and haven't been capped by England:
Glenn Murray (Brighton)
Andre Gray (Watford)
Troy Deeney (Watford)
Danny Ward (Cardiff City)
You can see why WIlson has been capped

Not much use in giving a debut to a 35 year old striker.Woodleyclaret wrote:Much as I hate Brighton I would have capped Murray

Are we donating £250000 to him for this contribution to English football.

I think so.Goobs wrote:I know you are taking the mick but as Barnes hasn't been capped by Austria he is still available for England isn't he?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be added to Aggi's list as well.

All this negativity, how caps are handed out like confetti yet we just achieved our best place at a world cup since 1990...

Re: Calum Wilson England class?
I'd love him at Burnley. He's quick, a decent finisher and he has a bit of a niggle to him. He's not afraid to leave his leg in sometimes. I think he's a good fit for the way England play, certainly against the better nations who'll hold onto the ball more. He's perfect on the counter.

Re: Calum Wilson England class?
When Wilson learns to control the ball and kick with both feet and pass.I will change my opnion .But then I have little time for most of the players Southgate picks as hes far too inluenced by the media who talk up very average players.Nobody will ever convince me that Abraham and Rashford are England class. As kids big for their age, their kick and rush tactics worked .At internationals the ability to play with both feet, pass and pick out teammates is vital. Both players and Wilson are not good enough.
Wilson was anonymous when we thrashed Eddies darlings this season.

Re: Calum Wilson England class?
Wilson played well, great movement and positioning. Just lacked a finish for a few chances, one of which he basically fashioned himself. Took his goal very well, not an easy finish by any stretch
Always makes me laugh when I see people calling out the current England team. “Look how far we’ve fallen” whilst posting pictures of the so-called Golden Generation that won absolutely f*ck all. This is the best England side in years, and it’s only going to get better.

Wilson has scored just as many, and has assisted 4 more.

He did all the below as a teenager against adults. And hes just turned 21 ffs.
Kane made his debut a few weeks before he was 22!!!
Re: Calum Wilson England class?
I actually watched Wilson and thought I wish we had a striker similar to him. Quick, strong and a goal threat. He's not world class and probably not quite good enough to be an England regular, but he's a decent player.

We shall see. Not much to live up to either way, 1966 remains England’s only cup win.Spijed wrote:Probably until they come up against a decent side in a major tournament.

Re: Calum Wilson England class?
England caps are now seriously devalued as a host of players of average ability are promoted by a manager of very average ability himself.
Southgates clutching at straws capping any Charlie who has a couple of decent games.Tom and Nick must be gutted as their injuries stopped a developing international career.
How on earth Alex McCarthy got a cap is beyond me.
Joe Hart was the obvious choice with a string of excellent games but Southgate is obsessed with younger players. This is despite perceived wisdom that a keeper gets better after 30.We will win nothing with Southgate in charge.

That Golden Generation never even reached the heights of a semi-final appearance, the exciting thing about this England squad is most will play another 3/4 major tournaments, whether they can win anything time will tell, winning World Cups and European Championships isn't easy just look at Belgium's talent and yet they haven't tasted success.SGr wrote:Wilson played well, great movement and positioning. Re: Calum Wilson England class?
England have lacked desire to win reaching semi finals is like finishing forth in a 100m sprint, yet they are fated for their effort.A succession of managers have accepted 2nd best as good enough. It isnt.
I dont beleive it hurts our stars enough when they lose despite their crocodile teams and hand wringing after another failure in a major tournament.
We get platitudes about certain players being world class and the next big thing which is part of the issue with rising stars beleiving the hype from the media.
The reality of a Premier league full of foreigners is very few players eligible to play for England are coming into first team squads
I admire the optimism of posters on here but were Englands future is concerned I can't share this view.

Southgate's Striker equivalent of Chalobah, in midfield!
