Subway pass is a must. First day sight see what you want and the rest of the time just walk, take the subways to randoms stops. Take the free staten island ferry. Lots a little independent cafes etc.Burnley123 wrote:Has anyone got any recommendations for New York?

Re: New York
Did it for New Years Eve a few years back, great place.
As Dyched says take the free Staten Island ferry, takes you past Statue of Liberty.
Ice Rinks in Central Park or at Rockerfella Centre.
Did the open top bus tours, 1 of which goes through the Bronx or near to it.
Enjoy your trip Burnley123

If you want some great pics of Manhattan, take the PATH from the World Trade Centre towards Newark and get off at the first stop (Exchange Square, I think) for great view of lower Manhattan.
The PATH is a great, and cheap, way of getting to/from New Jersey, especially if you're using Newark Liberty Airport.
http://www.panynj.gov/path/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Many people also walk over Brooklyn Bridge, but if you cross by the walkway on the south side on Manhattan Bridge (the next bridge north) you are presented with another great view of Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan.
If you need a footy fix then Legends Bar is home to The Football Factory where there's live streams of just about any game. Easy to find, it's right by the Empire State.

Re: New York
Ground zero is good.
Top of the Rock is great views - if it’s not cloudy
Staten Island ferry is free and good - especially if you can time it so you come back when it’s just turning dark.
Little Italy is really good
Broadway if you fancy a show - go to one of the ticket booths that sell discounted tickets on the day.
Grand Central train station is beautiful
Wear comfortable shoes as plenty of walking and it’s a good way to see the city - use the subway aswell.
Loads of great places to eat.
Time square good but very busy and too many people selling you tours (and illegal things !)
We enjoyed Chelsea Market on the high line but not sure it’s on at this time of the year.
Central Park is good.
Loads of stuff to do and whilst it might sound a bit boring you should really plan it so you go to stuff in the same area on the same day as New York is so big

Re: New York
100 percent the best advice i got. If its your first visit. Get the metro over to brooklyn and walk back to manhatten over the bridge. Therefore your first proper view is of the famous skyline. Was pheonomenal.
Grimaldis pizzeria in brooklyn under the bridge is incredible too. Proper NYC style pizza.
I was actually veey impressed with little italy too. Expected it to be touristy and crap food. But was the best meal we ate there.
Definitely do a bus tour. I dont always do these. But 100 percent recommend the new york one.
Go up the rockafella centre. Amazing views.
Staten island ferry, coney island, chelsea pier all cool. So much to see and do for free.

Re: New York
these posts are good, but I love the way everyone sounds familiar with the place ,as if they lived there for ten years.
"Gotta eat at petrocelli's on 23rd and main "
best bar in town is Irish Joe's , ask for Big Lois , the guy with no head, tell him I sent ya "

Re: New York
Liberty Island
Ellis Island
Top of the rock
Empire State
Central park, take in Strawberry fields and the Inn on the Green
Those trips apart we tended to get the subway to the Battery and wander back towards the hotel. Little Italy, China Town, Wall St., Brooklyn Bridge, The Woolworth Building, Police Plaza, every corner brings a new site that you'll have seen in some film or tv series.
The only disappointing thing was Times Square, very underwhelming.
People were over friendly, if possible, but good. Never saw an ounce of trouble the whole week we were there
We loved every second of it, I hope you do too.

Re: New York
Nobody mentioning the Empire State Building? It's perhaps a bit of a cliche, but if you get the weather/visibility as we did, the view, indeed whole experience is awesome; similarly a wander through Central Park, though perhaps a tad cool this time of the year?

High line. Chelsea area. Red Rooster in Harlem for the best chicken in the world. $2 late night pizza slices wherever you see them.

Re: New York
Also the comedy / improv clubs are really good.
Re: New York
For the best view around go to the top o one world observatory, not been up long 102 floors in 47 seconds is the boast and then the views are second to none, as its at the side of 911 you can combine the two. Also don't miss a broadway play, did not think this was my thing but loved it!

Re: New York
Top of the Rock is a better view of the City than the Empire State, but it’s hard not to do both just to say you have I guess.
All the usual tourist haunts of course (Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Time Square etc), but I will throw in the NYPD Museum and the FDNY Museum. I found these incredibly haunting with their relics from 9/11 and memorials, very interesting exhibits outside of this too.
Have a great time, been twice and got engaged there in 2009. My favourite city, can’t wait to go back.

Re: New York
Pay the extra $20 for the guided tour at ground zero. Queue jump is handy but the guide we had was excellent- I doubt we would have picked up the information he gave if we wandered around ourselves, even with the head sets.
Have a beer/cocktail here in Times Square, not cheap but worth a look https://www.theviewnyc.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Maidson Square Gardens for an event- we watched the Knicks.
Can get tickets to go to inside the crown in the Statue of Liberty, book way in advance. Was tiny inside, not missing much if you do not.
Dinner cruise to the Statue was a highlight for us, we went with these https://hornblowernewyork.com/fleet/hornblower-hybrid/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Litlle Italy, the ever encroaching China town, the high line and all the boroughs are good.
Only talking about it yesterday, absolutely great city- probably the best I’ve visited. Must be what foreign tourists think when they come to London

Re: New York
Just a simple hint, when using the subway make sure you go down the correct entrance stairs as each entrance serves only one platform so therefore only one direction.

Re: New York
Tip.
Log in McDonald’s and Starbucks WiFi.
Just once.
Pretty much always be on WiFi while walking around outside. Or pick it up every minute or so.

Great, thanks all. Appreciate all your advice.
Re: New York
Ellen’s stardust diner just off time square. Bettter to book in advance.
Re: New York
Without doubt, find Tick Tock diner for breakfast. It'll set you up for the day and, it was so good, we went every morning despite the choice available.

Stage Door Deli,in the financial quarter is also excellent.
Ess-a-Bagel on 3rd Avenue between 50 and 51st is also the best bagel in NY, IMO

Re: New York
Go. I am assuming you mean Manhattan but I guess I am missing out on what has happened in Brooklyn and Queens in the last ten years.
Two suggestions, (of loads), Little Italy, though obviously weather may be a problem! and the oyster bar in Grand Central station. Enjoy.
