When people give you change
Like in shops or the pub. You give them a tenner/twenty for a pint and they put the £5/10 note in your hand first and then coins.
Why? All that happens is the coins slide off the bloody note, especially if its a new note.
Doesnt coins first then notes make more sense?

But I prefer the note to be placed in the hand 1st so it stops the bloody thing floating off into the ether....
Ref conyoviejo and the thicko post....
They must be thick or trying a con as most tills now tell them the correct change to be given.....

There is that. It stops the coins sliding onto the bar or crushing their hands so the coins stay gliding on the notetim_noone wrote:I always tell them to keep the change.... It save all the hassle.

You've dangled a good worm here Frank. The sort of irrelevant nonsense much loved on groups like this, guaranteed to be a long runner with over ten responses in the first half hour:-)
Anyway here's my ha'peth, so to speak.
It doesn't make sense to me.
Surely you hold your hand out 'cupped' when accepting your monetary returns. As the notes, especially the new ones are seldom perfectly flat, they fit into the hollow in your hand making it difficult for them to slide out. When the coins are put on top, because of their weight, they sink into the little nest that's been formed, pressing the note further down which in turn makes it difficult for any of your change to slide off your hand.
Bleedin' obvious innit?

Unless you have a note given to you that isn't as wrinkly and crunkled as a 102 year old person, the coins begin to slide.

As convenient as that is for you, you're doing your shops out of a few quid that way. If you can pay cash, please do. It helps small businesses massively, not only for cashflow but we don't get stung an extra 1-3% like we do via card machine providers.Alanstevensonsgloves wrote:I only use cash for car park machines. Re: When people give you change
I had a minor discussion with the Pound Bakery in Burnley this lunchtime - I spent £3, gave them £10, and they wanted to give me a fiver, a two and a one in change. Even pricing everthing in pounds, they can't always get it right.conyoviejo wrote:Always check your change there are some real thickos working in shops and pubs who can't reckon up to save their lives..

Re: When people give you change
You have to look at it from the cashier's point of view. These days their machine e tells you what change to give you, say £5.53. They'll then give you £5, 50p, 2p then 1p.
In days past when a cashier might have to calculate the change it would be easier the other way round - £4.47 for your pint, 1p, 2p, 50p give £5, then £5 makes your tenner.
Sorry to be so sensible.

Always done it that way.
Makes it clear what notes are being given and then the change on top is also easier to see.
It's rare anyone makes an issue of how their change is handed over.

In the days of the ten bob note I was working in a paper shop. Someone bought a packet of fags for, say 4s 10d, and paid with a 10s note. I gave them their change, 5s 2d, and then the 10s note too as if they'd give me a £1 note. They never said anything and nor did I. It haunts me to this day!dsr wrote:I had a minor discussion with the Pound Bakery in Burnley this lunchtime - I spent £3, gave them £10, and they wanted to give me a fiver, a two and a one in change. Frank has this spot on.
Coins slipping off bank notes - happens all the time
Notes getting "blown away" because they aren't weighted down with coins - never ever happened

You must be the guy who occasionally frequents a pub I go in. He drives a flash motor and if he buys, say, seven quids worth of drinks, he hands over a twenty and tells the bar staff to keep the change. They love him, but methinks his money is perghaps, ahemm, too easily made!tim_noone wrote:I always tell them to keep the change.... It save all the hassle.

I believe this problem is what led directly to the development of contactless payment technology.

If I remember rightly, in 1970 a Twix was 3d. 50p is 10s which is 120d - 40 Twixes.
With inflation that 10s/50p would be worth £7.51:
http://www.in2013dollars.com/1970-GBP-i ... amount=0.5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
£7.51/40 = 19p (or 45d).
I don't know what a Twix costs today, but I believe they are smaller too.

Change used to be counted into your hand, so you knew it was correct. Now it arrives as a lump.

Re: When people give you change
Sorry.. it still isn't right.
Coins sit neat in your hand. The note then goes on top and you close your hand. Do it the other way and it risks coins sliding off if they give you lots of 5, 10, 20 pences. Doesn't happen the other way, regardless of the note.

Re: When people give you change
Note first then coins.
When then transferring money from hand to wallet/pocket, coins can be slid into receptacle leaving both hands and all fingers free to tuck note into holder.

Re: When people give you change
After the transaction of coins then notes to hand, we are then talking a different phase. This is when we as the receiver take over and just slam it in the pocket or wallet - but it's all intact. Note first brings into a reasonable chance of coins sliding off the note and ending up on the counter/floor.RogerBest wrote:Note first then coins.

If a note falls it falls at a slower speed, giving us more chance to catch it mid-flight.

Just watch what happens if your shopping / round / order comes to, say, £7.20 and you hand them a tenner and then follow up with ‘I’ll give you the 20p too’.conyoviejo wrote:Always check your change there are some real thickos working in shops and pubs who can't reckon up to save their lives..

I used to work in pubs and when it was rammed you’d get chancers claiming they gave you a twenty when it was a ten. Caused a right mess having to take the till off and check the float.

Re: When people give you change
That'll be £2.77 please.
Sorry, I've only got a ten pound note.
Ok no problem, so that's 3p is 2.80, 20p makes 3, 2's five pounds and a fiver makes 10. Thanks very much, see you later.
As a matter of course, it's always been coins first as you count the change back to what the customer gave you. Only people lacking a basic education need a till to tell them what change to give.

Makes obvious sense from my end. Someone gives you a ten, your change is seven and change (as told to you by the register) you pull the big bills left to right, count them out and end up with the change on top. What's wrong with that!?

I Concur with the opening post. Its frivolous and minor but it should be coins first. You can grab the note at the end anyway.

You know what is annoying?
The “self serve” machines at supermarkets giving out the smaller denominations of change in as many coins as possible.
I always seem to end up with four 5p whenever in Morrison’s instead of a 20p or even two 10p

Surprising how little cash is used nowadays
I consider I had a free meal, yesterday, when I went to a Hungry Horse. The card system was out of action. Cash only! I thought I only had £15 in my wallet, so went back to my partner, to see if she had any cash. While she was sorting her bag, I took out the £5 and £10 and found another ten behind it and then another! These notes out of a machine, just locked tightly together!
Poor woman in front of me, could only muster a tenner deposit and sent her hubby to a machine, in town!

Re: When people give you change
I blame electronic tills.
Back in the day one crusty old bar person could serve loads of people a minute by adding up the cost in their head and being clever enough to work out the change.
Nowadays one stares for hours at bar staff fiddling around with these machines, even having to wait hours for a till to come free. And they make more mistakes. I once paid in 12 cheques of £100 each. The cashier added them up while I felt the queue behind me get restive
This applies not just to bars but anywhere there is a queue to get served.
It is this constant waiting in queues that gets people angry and then, in anticipation, get wound up as to how their change will get delivered.
These stresses could be avoided by reverse technology
