Gomez and a protected species

Post by Stayingup » Fri Dec 07, 2018 8:38 am

Unfortunatley Joe Gomez has a fractured leg after a clean but robust challenge my Ben Mee. As we know, correctly, no foul was given.
A newspaper report this morning says- 'He was bundled into the advertising hoardings by a robust sliding challenge'. Really? Thats not how I saw it. His momentum took him into the hoardings. The article to me contradicts itself beacuse how can someone be 'bundled' into the hoardings by a sliding tackle.

Its just been on BBC Breakfast .Totally one-sided review .Interview with Klopp complaining about Mike Dean and our tackling but only a statement from Dyche...no interview .

Is there meant to be something on that link that proves he hit the hoardings, apart from it says so?

Oh- you removed it.

Could be interesting considering the Brighton players' penchant for falling over.

It wasn't the advertising hoarding. This doesn't show all of it, but it shows enough to see that it had nothing to do with it.

great tackle. Gomez looking to whip it into the box. Mee had to commit. As usual, Dyche responds with eloquence and common sense

Fantastic tackle as they all were. If I were Sean I’d be pinning these articles up in the dressing room, what better way to get the boys fired up and aggressive for a big game!!

Yeah I removed it Doug. It was only the written word which obviously wouldn't have sufficed as evidence for the Poirot's on here.

The Telegraph article has comments that doesn’t help with the “scousers are always victims” opinion...

Yes I read the comments. Players with low IQ's and Liverpool should sue Burnley were two of my favourites from fans in the City that ALWAYS has a cause.

Saw it from the Bob Lord, he hit the hoardings, the first part of the clip shows it. The tackle was perfect and clean he would have just slid and stopped and got up had it been at the half way line.

There seems to be a movement at the moment to get tackling banned. It wont manage that but it will have to be only when the ball is a yard or so in front of the attacker. It has been going that way for a long time but people like Hodgeson (Zaha) and Klopp will end up getting some more movement.

How much they get will determine how long I continue think it is worth watching football. As for the football authorities they will no doubt be quite happy as scores of 21 - 7 each week will they believe help break America.

Up to this weekend I really liked Klopp. My opinion has now changed somewhat. I don't think I'm alone.

I'm sure they would be delighted if and eventually when defenders have to appeal to the ref by putting their hands up and shouting "I could of tackled there" the ref will accept the "tackle" or go to VAR before possession changes.

Wont that be fun to watch, I'm glad I don't play now I'd never finish a match and I wasn't a dirty player.

I am thinking exactly the same as you elwa --where is the game going?

I am afraid that the way the modern game is going we are going to be in a situation where every bit of physical contact is penalised in one way or another. I played and refereed at semi-professional level in this country and also in Germany and have the scars to prove it after participating in senior football for over 50 years. The Germans never enjoyed you putting in a good tackle and I am going back to the late 60s and 70s!

Quite frankly, the way that the game is going now, with lots of players diving, falling over with the slightest contact, feigning injury, holding their face when an arm has caught them in the chest etc., etc., it is hardly worth spending my money watching it.
It is becoming a very sterile game, however, it seems to be what the modern fan wants.

I don't get this. The link above shows a little of the incident - ball played forward, L'pool player is running towards the ball - Ben Mee gets there before him and clears the ball - L'pool player continues and connects with Ben's legs. The timing is everything. Two players going for the same ball - one gets their first, the other straight afterwards. As Gomez knew he was getting there second he had the choice to continue or to pull away and avoid the collision. He chose the former - and I think he was right to make that choice - but suffered an injury because he gets there second.

Ben Mee's actions were not a foul and not "taking out the man" - just good, competitive football. Good competitive football from Gomez, also.

On this occasion the guy who got there second got injured. On another occasion it might have been Ben who picked up the injury. On another both of them could have continued unhurt.

I'd have been "chuffed" if I'd made the interception that Ben made. If I'd been Gomez - and not hurt in the collision - I'd have known that next time I needed to try to get there first. Either way, it's a "shake of the hand"* and "well played" to my opponent.

* or "nod of appreciation".

It's unfortunate Gomez got injured, no-one wants to see that but I thought it was as near perfectly executed tackle of its type you're likely to see.

We've all seen players walk away unscathed from x-rated challenges - the one in the Chorley v Doncaster game is a recent example that springs to mind.

It's an inevitable consequence of a contact sport - happens all the time, difference on this occasion is that the manager of the injured player is always good for a sound-bite and gets a disproportionate amount of media exposure.

If Ben Mee's making those sort of tackles that well then he's maybe getting back towards last season's exceptional levels.

We should also use all the "no-one likes us, we don't care" angle to our advantage. The Burnley love-in seems well and truly over. We need to get back to a siege mentality and being a team that has to battle and scrap for everything

I can’t believe that’s the same bloke who is moaning about a perfectly good tackle, it just can’t be - Klopp wouldn’t encourage that type of tackle and then encourage celebrations with the fans...

Typical of a lot of Football managers

We used to see Arsie Wenger moaning about everything but never saw it when his own players transgressed.

Means nowt really, apart from it gets us talking about it in the stands lol.

Can imagine this. The referee calls all the Burnley players to him and says 'now look here you lot with low IQ's Mr Klopp doesn't want you to tackle his players so stop it immediately and let them just go past you'.
