Would any Burnley Players From 1984-2000 be good enough to play for this Burnley now ?

Would Ian Britton have been good enough ?

Do you think Steve Davis would have got in ?

I think for sure David Eyres would be an improvement.

Was Billy Hamilton better than Chris Wood ? He was just before my watching days

Was Leighton James (the bully) overrated ?

Glen Little would walk into this team imo.

I know he never really got the chance at this level and did lack pace. But he showed in an average burnley team against top sides how good he was. He was our le tissier. He absolutely ripped spurs apart that night.

In the first season after promotion under Stan he was incredible. Although it helped us by not doing, its a travesty he never signed for a top side round that time.

Aside from him our best players either werent good enough or had already been there. Cook, Ball, Blake.

Payton knew where the net is. And you cant coach that instinct. So who knows?

Papadopoulos went on to have a good career. Albeit not with us.

Why was Leighton James a bully?

I loved watching David Eyres as much as the next person but to say he’d improve our current team is mental. He had a long career in the lower reaches of the football league for a reason.

Glen Little would be nowhere near this team. He had no pace and was lazy. Little would have been well out of his depth at this level

Glen Little, and that’s about it. A shout out for an in his prime Vince Overson. I think Dyche might’ve got him and England Cap.

I am sure David Eyres was being watched by some of the top clubs at the time until they found out how old he was.

1986-1989 is the period I watched him play, I guess he was way past his best?

A brilliant player could turn on a sixpence as the saying went and leave his man chasing his shadow. He was a bit gobbI off the pitch though.

I can remember him taking a 50-yd, Tarkowski esque long raking diagonal ball down so beautifully and in stride in front of the Bob Lord Stand...a thing of beauty!

Ability can easily override lack of pace and being lazy

Ibrahimović was bone idle at times yet he had the ability which meant it didn't matter.

I am absolutely certain that these modern day pampered `athletes` would not have got a look in back in the days of sodden pitches kicking a 5kg football around so saying player from the past could not muster it in the modern day, for this post, seems a tad churlish. You would not have seen the majority of Arsenal`s team anywhere a pitch back in the 1950s and 1960s (I`m guessing).

Trevor Steven, Mike Phelan, Vince Overson - all of whom had good careers in the top flight at Everton, Norwich& Man Utd, Forrest respectively

Payton and Little are slight possibles on a descending scale of likelihood based on work rate, but there is no denying their substantial talents

I still lament the broken leg of Mark Monnington - as a teenager he looked like he was going to go all the way, never got back to that level after it

No chance, it's all about levels and between 84 and 2000 we were nowhere near this one.

Glenn & Steve Davies.

Glenn showed he could perform at top level with Reading & Portsmouth including a cracking game in Europe when he was at the end of his career. A tricky player like glenn has a place in a squad like ours today.

Steve Davies is the most composed CB I've seen play for Burnley & I rate him higher than many of the CB we have had represent us at this level, so I would say he would be good enough to be involved in this team now.

Glen Little ability wise would be 100% good enough to get in our current team but he wouldn't work hard enough for Dyche. He certainly wasn't out of his depth when playing for Reading in the top flight.

I'd have to say Little, however...
How good would JBG look in that 99/00 team if you were to switch?

In all honesty, I think all of our current players would look like world beaters. Our 3 keepers are England internationals ffs  I loved Beresford as much as the next Burnley fan, but he was Middlesborough's 2nd/3rd choice for years, and hardly banging down the door so he could get a place in the England squad.

As mentioned, a lot of those players were great at lower League level but would have struggled in the top flight ... Steve Davis was great but lacked a yard or two of pace, Super John had pace, but close control was not his forte ... others were either past their best, lacked consistancy or occasionally application.

I remember Ted McMinn, well past his best when he came to us, ripping a young Swansea full back ( U21 International ) to pieces in the first half to the extent that he didn't reappear for the 2nd half ....

Obviously, the one exception to this was John Deary, who we've never really replaced properly, and who'd have easily made the Brazilian team of 1970 !! :D :D :D UTC !!

My m8 Mike was convinced on a rather boozy weekend (overnighter in Taunton and went down to Exeter St Davids by train) he saw Ady score twice against Exeter (we lost 4-1   ) the eleventeen pints we drunk possibly had something to do with that hahaha.

Mikes Dad always had a thing against John (Weary) Deary.
We were at Hull (I think it was over Christmas one year in the mid 90's) and John scored a screamer of a 30 yarder and even then all we got was a Harrumph ......

Int Footy wonderful..

Billy Hamilton did play in the top flight, but he was a striker who did all his damage at home, rarely played well away in the league. That night he scored twice at Tottenham equaled his away goal tally for two full seasons in the league.

Leighton James in his first spell at Burnley was good enough, not after that, and the likes of Davis and Eyres, no matter how well they did for us, played in Burnley teams way below the level we play now.

Glen Little did play higher than we are now for Pompey and played against AC Milan when perhaps past his best.

He wouldn't be in a Dyche side though, maybe Eddie Howe or similar would pick him.

Man City bid 5m for him when we were both at the top of the championship which was quite a lot of money then.

Re: Adrian Randall

I read an interview with Harry Redknapp a few years ago where he stated that Randall was the biggest wasted talent he'd seen in his career. All of the skill, none of the application. He showed glimpses of his talent when playing for Burnley but, in my opinion, didn't do it often enough.

What about a wasted talent?
“Adrian Randall at Bournemouth. He was a genius. Six foot tall, he used to glide over the pitch, juggling the ball on his foot. He could do it all. We used to play him against Tony Pulis in training and he’d tie him in knots, but he never really made it. He was so laid-back in his attitude. You just wanted to shake him, because this was a talent like I’d never seen.”

+1 for Glenn.

Adrian Randall was an enigma. He was capable of some moments of unbelievable skill and his first touch always put him in space but he never managed to apply his talents consistently on the field. Frustration personified.

In addition: Inchy. He did have an established top flight career and when he played for us in the lower divisions it was obvious he was a class above those around him.
