Arsenal ... diving !!
Yesterday, Arsenal had no less than three player booked for " simulation " or " cheating " as it might be called ....
How many bookings are required until the club faces a charge of " bringing the game into disrepute " or alternatively," failing to control their players " ? The practice is clearly endemic throughout the Club, and they, amongst others, should be brought to book ....

Some players really know how to dive
Neymar has even learned to dive so well... he can do it backwards

It’s always diving when other teams do it but when Barnes does it it’s being clever.

It stops as soon as points are deducted. FIFA, UEFA, the Premier League nor anyone else has the bottle to do that because the serial offenders are the big clubs and there’s no way they (the football authorities) can upset them. VAR might help a little bit over a period of time, but bookings and suspensions for individual players are a compete cop out. Take a point away and diving could be eradicated immediately because clubs can afford to a player more than they can afford to lose a point.

As much as I want us to stay in The Premier League, I sometimes wish we werent involved in modern football at all. Embarrasing.

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
The murray one was horrible. He initiated the contact by hooking his leg to tarks.
They could solve this by only giving a penalty kick for fouls in the 6 yard box. Anything outside that is a free kick.

Hopefully VAR will stop this cheating and we'll see divers getting sent off for it.

The first one Arsenals Ramsey(surprise) was the most Beautiful a dive I've ever seen and is worthy of a place in the Tate.cricketfieldclarets wrote:As much as I want us to stay in The Premier League, I sometimes wish we werent involved in modern football at all. Embarrasing.

I think var would only have turned 2 of those calls around. The murray hook and sturridges phantom contact. I think too many people think "theres contact so its a foul..." and var wont fix that.

I'm hoping (perhaps misguidedly) that the presence of VAR will deter the divers.AshevilleNCClaret wrote:I think var would only have turned 2 of those calls around. The murray hook and sturridges phantom contact. I think too many people think "theres contact so its a foul..." and var wont fix that.

VAR will give even more advantage to the top 6, it is only referred to if it's 'clear and obvious' which translates to if a top 6 clubs player is touched it's referred too an anybody else ignore it an claim it wasn't 'clear and obvious'boatshed bill wrote:I'm hoping (perhaps misguidedly) that the presence of VAR will deter the divers.

But what happens when top 6 sides are playing against each other?
And what are the likely punishments for diving?

So 5Live reported .... sounds like a forgotten Shakespeare play, " The three Divers of Arsenal ", written shortly after " The two Gentlemen of Verona " !tim_noone wrote:Did the Three divers of Arsenal get booked yesterday?

It's ok, the FA have this. A yellow card was dished out to all 3 cheats so this will absolutely ensure that none of them will cheat ever again. Just think, next week, when one of them dives once again, they'll be thinking "oh no, I may receive a yellow card". That'll stop 'em.

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
Its going to take some post-match bans for it to work. They might get the call during the game, but after the fact, give them a 5 match ban.
I don't fault refs not getting the calls 100% right on the field: they do a great job being in a great position BUT can't see everything
For Sturridges dive, the second angle looked like a foul but the first angle show NO contact.
Video replay is used in the NFL and is widely successful, but the game is geared to stoppages of play.

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
From what I remember (and being as objective as possible )...
Ramsey embellished the push. minimal contact MAXIMUM dive.
Murray hooked his leg on Tarks leg, causing them to fall over.
Pope got the ball on Bernando Silva, who collapsed from the minimum contact.
There was no contact on Sturridge.
Can't remember the other calls...

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
I said exactly the same thing this morning to a mate at work. Why do Arsenal seem to be easily the worst club in the land for diving. The only consolatioin was that the ref did the right thing and booked them.Clarets4me wrote:Yesterday, Arsenal had no less than three player booked for " simulation " or " cheating " as it might be called ....

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
You're probably right, Ramseys was a blatant dive, but I still think they would give it. Tarks hand on his back couldn't have pushed over a 5 year old, but refs are too frightened of making calls against the BIG clubs.AshevilleNCClaret wrote:I think var would only have turned 2 of those calls around. Still VAR is better than nothing, with a second look Atkinson would have to have given that pen on Saturday or leave himself looking like a muppet.
Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
Until they decide that the principal element of a foul depends on what the offending player does, then VAR will be no use. As it stands, fouls are dependent on the dive. If there is slight contact in the back of a man who does not fall over, it's not a foul; but if the same contact is made and he flings himself over, it is a foul. (Unless it's a Burnley man in the penalty area, of course.)

VAR will hopefully help the smaller clubs with debatable decisions, Hendrick at Huddersfield was as stonewall a penalty as you will see without being given.Colburn_Claret wrote:You're probably right, Ramseys was a blatant dive, but I still think they would give it. As for the Tarks/Ramsey incident this shows how difficult it is to judge in real time as from where I sat in the Bob Lord he looked to clearly push him, Ramsey knew it went down easily and let’s say Tarks would not be a good poker player as his face gave it away.

Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
I just hope that the officials can do it in a timely fashion. An American football game is 4 15-minute quarters (60 minutes). They last roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes (195 minutes) - nearly 3 times as long.dsr wrote:Until they decide that the principal element of a foul depends on what the offending player does, then VAR will be no use. Officials need to make a decision within 45 seconds or less. We also use the term "indisputable evidence" for the overturn of calls: it is called on the field and the replay must be indisputable to overturn. if there is some doubt, the call on the field stays.
I fear it will take forever (like 5 minutes) to come to a decision which will prolong the game and ruin the flow of it.
Re: Arsenal ... diving !!
Isn't the point of VAR for when there is no debate. If it's debatable, the ref's decision stands.Dy1geo wrote:VAR will hopefully help the smaller clubs with debatable decisions, Hendrick at Huddersfield was as stonewall a penalty as you will see without being given.
If you have the 'yeah, but there is contact' argument thrown in, VAR won't really change anything.

VAR will still have a them and us outcome.
Top 6...oh that lower team goal was marginally offside as that toe confirms.
The Top 6....Yes that ruffian definitely made contact, if only in his mind....penalty.
