Going down?

Post by Gnulty » Sat Dec 15, 2018 5:07 pm

No way Jose! A point lost at the end, another season in the Premier League gained! Burnley back to basics lately, and a solid mid table position awaits us come may. UTC!!

It gives me hope that even if we do it won't be with a whimper.
Several weeks earlier it looked doom and gloom without a prayer, that gives us some hope that we have some fight still left in there.

Gibson and JBG to come back with hopefully an addition or 2, we might just do it.
It'll be close, but fingers crossed

Certainly a base to build from

I hate to say this but I still think there is a good chance we could go down. We simply don't offer anything going forward.

I think it's too early to say for sure either way. Pleased to have seen more effort in recent weeks. Think we need to sign 2 or 3 good first team quality players in Jan.

Think it's going to be close but at least there are some other poor teams down there who also don't have much quality. So we have a chance. Not a window for Garlick to be a tight wad in though.

Performances from the Liverpool game onwards suggest we're in with a fighting chance. A physical/combative/tall(?) CM is a must in the January window. We also need a 10-goal striker - but it's a big ask.

It all starts with a solid defence and a midfield confident enough to better serve our forwards..We're almost there. (norwegian english ;) )

Already down tbh. Need to start planning for Championship life and working to make sure our squad is good enough to avoid back-to-back relegations.

We are in a relegation battle - no question. We never ever dominate in the middle of the park so don't create much. If we buy in the upcoming transfer window I just hope it's someone who can go into the team. Our two outfield recruits from the last transfer window never get picked!!!

We're not already down but it's not looking good I have to say. I think.we are in a malaise still due to starting in July allied to poor player eecruitment. I think.we can improve but whether we do may well depend on a couple of new recruits. Our record of late in that department is not good
So.....???

I think going down would be a good thing. Think of the ease of buying a twix or taking a leak in our luxurious bogs. No hangers on and just us pure uber fans watching the team again.

I can only assume that the people on here that haven’t seen our last 3 games are the people that think we will go down which I can understand.

I have seen the last 3 and think that the suggestion or even the question that we will go down as preposterous, I’ll go further and say all things being even that we will “not go down this season”.

How many points have we gained then by being plucky losers against Liverpool and Spurs? To stay up we're going to have to win another 5 or 6 games, which at the minute we don't look like doing.

You do realise who we have played in those last 3 games don’t you I.E. Liverpool and Spurs being 2 of them and then looked where those 2 are in the league?

Must have imagined we beat Brighton last week then, absolutely no reason we can't get another 7/8 wins, outside the top six one of whom we nearly got an away point against today, there is very little difference in the teams.

Mate, we won’t go down because we didn’t get results of Spurs and Liverpool. You’ve also ignored that fact that we got three points against Brighton.

If we replicate those performances and form (in terms of Losing to the top teams and beating the ‘average’ ones), we’ll stay up.

Watching the last 3 games, I’d say we now do look like staying up. Have to maintain the performances though, and as fans we need to do our bit by creating atmospheres like the Liverpool game.

We could be.

The last few games have been an improvement and the fight has come back, but let's not pretend yesterday's 1-0 was a deserved result. Spurs had numerous opportunities and failed to put the game to bed, they did so eventually.

Brighton were poor and let's not forget we beat Bournemouth 4-0 and yet we're still in and around it now. Winning games will happen, I'm just not sure we will win enough.

We're not "in" games enough for me to be convinced we can win games consistently, how many "winnable" games are left? We will need to win 7 out of that figure which is going to be difficult.

We'll be there or thereabouts.
We're fighting to the death and I cant ask for much more than that.

I've said it before and I still maintain it: Europe was an unwanted distraction for me. History points towards it.

I'm beginning to think that there are only 4 clubs in this season's relegation scrap, the bottom 3 plus Cardiff.

It’s hard to see Burnley staying up this time sadly. We are trying very hard and look much more defensively sound if late, but we create very, very few chances and will therefore struggle to win the requisite number of games to avoid relegation this time. I said when we qualified for Europe that relegation would more than likely follow due to the factors we are all well aware of. We would have been better finishing 8th, as a club our size would still be given kudos for nearly qualifying, with the added bonus being that we would more than likely have carried momentum into this season. I hope I’m wrong, but it’s almost Christmas and the league table is more than a tad worrying!

I don't buy all this Europe malarky. We failed to prepare effectively enough true but just being in Europe isn't the issue. More that we seemed to quickly start to point to it being a distraction we didn't want (by "we" I mean higher in the Club) and I think this "un-BUrnley-like" attitude leached a lot of confidence.

Plus the higher expectation has really taken a toll. It's not surprising that we're starting to look more like ourselves again now everyone agrees we're fighting to survive.

It's going to be extremely difficult, me thinks.
To stay up that is.

We're reliant on the current players for the next 10 games or so
even if we did manage to get some new ones in over January.
We need to be in a position at the end of January where
we're still in contention, still fighting and believing, relatively injury free
and hoping a few new additions will give us an added boost.

We've got Everton, West Ham, Fulham, Southampton and Spurs as our next 5 home
With Arsenal, Huddersfield, Watford, MAn U, and Brighton away as our next 5 away
I think we'd need to win 3 or 4 of those alongside 2 or 3 draws.
Probably a minimum of 12 points but ideally 15 to take us up to min. of 24 pts but ideally 27 ...or more.

Fulham & Southampton at home are must win games.
Huddersfield and Brighton away are must not lose and ideally get 3/4 points.
If we can pick up another win from any of the remaining games be they at home or away
then even better but if not or at least a couple of draws - 2/3 points.

I'd settle for 4 wins, and 2 draws. 14 pts.
So 26 on the board with 10/11 games to go.

As has been pointed out the return of 'maximum effort, minimum requirement' from the Liverpool game onwards has made us competitive again. In order to survive we have to maintain that but at the same time add an attacking threat to our game.

Based on the quality of squads as they stand we probably rank 17th, above Cardiff, Huddersfield and Fulham. Southampton have far more attacking options. it remains to be seen if the new manager can consistently play to those strengths whilst at the same time reducing the number of goals conceded. They already look better following Hughes' departure and are almost certainly ahead of us in terms of identifying international talent.

Fulham will probably spend big, could go either way, but presumably there will be some level of improvement.

Warnock seems to getting the most he possibly can from his current squad and they will probably find it difficult to attract players who can make a significant difference. They'll find points more difficult to pick-up in the second half of the season.

Huddersfield's situation looks difficult. According to Wagner they continue to play well but they're not picking up points. At least with us we know, and have shown in the last three games there's room for improvement. In addition the loss of Mooy is a huge blow.

The transfer window will be telling. In order to make up the lost ground and give us a realistic chance we need a PL class CM. You could also make a case for creativity in a central or wide area. Bringing in a striker would mean moving someone out but if Vydra is not the answer, for whatever reason, then the other three between them don't look like they'll score sufficient goals to keep us up.
