Hart 8 - 2 great saves, felt for him at full time, lucky not to be booked.
Bardsley - 7 did well
Long 7 - did as above
Tarky 8
Mee 7
Taylor 9 best game for us, defensively solid. Blocked time and time again, kept tripps quiet MOM
Lennon 7 put in a shift in
Cork 7 Just lacks offensively
Westwood 7 as above, thought Jeff for 1 of them at 70 was the call
Brady 7 purely for the shift defensively
Barnes 7 Put the shift in, fed of scraps

Was certainly a decent display defensively, but our set up guaranteed 1 goal was always going to be enough for Spurs. We can feel hard done by, however the points certainly went the right way.
It certainly gives us hope that we can beat the drop, the fight and effort was certainly there for all to see.

A mile apart from the dross at Palace 14 days earlier.

Onwards and upwards.... hopefully

Taylor 8 not great offensively, but best game for us, mom
Lennon 6 best game for Burnley.

Westwood 7 strong, hard-working, but would like to have seen Hendrick earlier
Brady 7 looking close to getting back to his best
Barnes 7 effort

Agree with Macca's marks and I too thought Taylor was MOM. Well done lads, such a pity you didn't get a point.

' Lennon 6 best game for Burnley' doesn't say much for his other games :)

hart - 8 a couple of top drawer saves but will be very disappointed to get beat on his near post at the death

bardsley - 8 excellent

long - 8 excellent

tarkowski - 8 excellent

mee - 8 excellent

taylor - 8 excellent

cork - 7 much better from him today, more like his old self

westwood - 7 in form but we'd be better with hendrick or defour in there

lennon - 7 full of running, defensively very good again

brady - 6 still finding his feet but he'll be there soon

barnes - 7 ridiculously hard job for him and if he could have just grown a couple of inches we'd have been in the lead

a team of spurs quality is always going to create chances but the number of times they carved out something really good was minimal and that's huge credit to our whole team, the framework and the manager. we looked very much back to being the dogged, determined outfit that steadily moved us into 7th place last season and with a bit more quality in the final ball, we could have nicked something.

we deserved a point today and hopefully the lads will take heart from the performance rather than heartbreak from the result. shout outs to the entire back 6 especially taylor who is improving by the game and is looking every inch the premier league defender.

plenty to be positive about and take to arsenal.

I thought that was a strange comment, the initial comment with the rating, not the response.

Not from me but if a player can go 10 minutes in a game without touching the ball then there’s some justification for it

As for vendettas I suggest you have a look at my previous marks for Lennon and I think you will realise you are talking hot air :D

We didn't offer too much of an offensive threat but did you think he did well defensively at all?

Hart 7 - did well and made a couple of good saves though one got past him right at the end unfortunately
Bardsley 7 - did well defensively against the very speedy Lucas most of the game, not much forward thrust for a wing back
Long 7 - part of a very steady back3 & playing that formation for the first time.
Tarko 8 - as per Long and made some good tackles in dangerous situations
Mee 7 - as per Long
Taylor 8 - did a good job defensively and did try sometimes to get into the swing of playing wing back,
Lennon 7- worked really hard defensively and managed a few runs
Cork 7- a lot of good defensive work and industrious against some very good players
Westwood 7 - as per Cork
Brady 6 - getting back towards where he was pre-injury but still a bit tentative and mixed dead-ball quality
Barnes 8 - played the lone striker role well, won more than his fair share and caused problems, worked really hard; much easier for their centre backs after he left the pitch.

The three-CB formation was very solid but, if we play that regularly, full backs have to be more adventurous. I think Taylor got into this role to some degree.
If we stay with "lone striker"- Barnes is the best option; he put himself about a lot today without getting into the silly stuff (daft fouls/dives).
Playing away v a very good team, the new formation worked well. The extra man at the back, though, allows a bit more adventure from at least one of the central midfielders.
I guess we'll play this system against Arsenal next week but it'll be interesting to see if we keep it for subsequent 2 home games.

Came away from that performance feeling weirdly OK - because despite the result being a kick in the teeth, today was really about the performance and that was very heartening.

Hart 6 - an excellent save in either half, but he undid much of that good work by being both out of position and slow to react for their goal - he simply has to force Eriksen to go across the goal, and it's inexcusable to leave so much space at the near post (I've seen it again).

Bardsley - 7 - probably the defender most discomforted by the change in formation and possibly sucked in a bit unnecessarily for the goal, but generally he was reliable and resolute.

Taylor - 8 - defended superbly and got forwards well when he could. Perhaps a little unlucky to slip once under pressure when he got round the back in the box.

Long - 8 - his competence probably helped Dyche make the decision to go with a back 5, and he rewarded him with a really solid display.

Tarks - 8 - he can use the call better than he did today, but defensively he was commanding at the centre of the back 5.

Mee - 8 - caught out by the change in shape a couple of times in the first half, but otherwise excellent.

Westwood- 7 - carried on where he left off last week with a feisty, tidy performance full of common sense.

Cork - 7 - good signs he's getting back towards his best.

Lennon 7 - huge shift defensively and some moments of real quality in attack, but I wanted him to show a desire to attack the space behind the full back more often to give us an outball.

Brady - 6 - really diligent defensively and looked positive in possession. Acouple of set plays aside he's still searching for his top gear, but it will come.

Barnes - 7 - gave absolutely everything and made the best of the service he had. Probably should have done better with the two clear chances he had, although in truth the second was a great block to deny a goal.

Wood - 7 - showed purpose and gave us an option even if the ball never quite sat right to give him a sight of goal.

An intriguing call from Dyche to go three at the back, and it worked generally worked well, particularly defensively. In attack we sometimes lacked the out ball the extra runner would have given us, but defensively we were excellent. Spurs might have been under strength and a bit leggy, but they're still a fine team and apart from the goal (itself highly preventable which is a real frustration) we limited Spurs to perhaps 4 or 5 really good chances. At the other end, Barnes' first half header and second half shot blocked from Lennon's sublime first time cut back from Brady's free kick were probably as clear as any chance in the game.

The next stage is definitely to add more conviction and numbers in attack (and perhaps with hindsight Dyche might have looked at this after 75 minutes today), and if we can do that we'll have more than a chance of getting something at Arsenal. But more importantly the discipline, drilling, organisation and will to win made this perhaps the most recognisably Dyche Burnley performance this year, and if we can build upon it, we'll survive with something to spare.

My one gripe is that we at least need to get cuter with our time wasting. Brady was possibly unlucky to take the rap for others but Bardsley wasn't, and it didn't help our cause to have those two on needless yellow cards. We can't complain about the likes of Brighton frustrating us that way when we're so blatantly at it ourselves.

If that's your view then fair enough. But I thought he was superbly protected today so was only really called upon to do 3 things. He made excellent saves for the first two, but on the third let himself down badly - in my view. So I marked him 6 - average - not poor or bad, just average.

He got it right in the corner, at pace in an extremely quick move from close range. No way should Hart save that or be positioned any better. Very harsh. And the mark completely overlooks the rest of the good work he did including 2 top saves.

But so could Tarky and Bardsley.

It's only fairly close range because Hart doesn't move between Kane shaping to lay it off by the penalty spot and Eriksen shooting. Eriksen had travelled about 6 or 7 yards in that time, so not sure why Hart shouldn't be expected to move himself. In my minds eye I can see the speed at which Heaton moved along his line to save from Ibrahimovich at Old Trafford two years ago to save a draw late on; there's no comparison here.

I do agree though that Bardsley also gets caught, and obviously the line is far too deep.

The heaton save was a world class save. Albeit instinctive. Theres any number of outcomes from this position. Onenyou mentioned yourself - going accross him for one.

The mix up when two of ours went for the same ball didnt help.

Eriksen is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world. Doesnt matter where Harts positioned. Its highly unlikely eriksen is missing that from 8 yards.

Well, we've done this discussion now on what is the player ratings thread. Fair to say we disagree, but there we are.

Fair to say everyone else disagrees with you aswell based on the ratings given to Hart.

Completely irrelevant to bring up Heaton’s save at Old Trafford. That was one of the best saves ever made by a Burnley keeper.

The way you are describing how bad you think he was for the goal you would think someone else in the media would have picked up on it.

Hart 8 Ridiculous to blame him for the goal. 2 centre halves went for the same ball and left the space.
Bardsley 7
Mee 9 Excellent all day ***
Tarky 7 New system showed when two centre backs go for the same ball and it happened on a couple of chances before the goal also
Long 7 See Tarky
Taylor 7. Best game for us so it is a 7. Does not get forward enough but was better today
Lennon 8
Brady 7
Westwood 8
Cork 8
Barnes 7. Big Sam would’ve scored the header. Unlucky with the volley

Wood 6

Having just watched the goal again several times on MOTD anyone laying fault at Hart for that goal is speaking out of his arse.
Saying he should anticipate it is ridiculous. Look at how the ball ended up with Eriksen...2 of our defenders going for the same ball and then 4 defenders getting dragged towards Kane. So it’s now Hart’s job to pick up the spare man is it ? It’s Hart’s job to “anticipate” that our 7 or 8 defenders in the box are going to leave someone at the back post ?
The goal is also absolutely nothing like the build up play for the Heaton wonder save against Zlatan. I have no idea why this was even mentioned.

“The next stage is definitely to add more conviction and numbers in attack (and perhaps with hindsight Dyche might have looked at this after 75 minutes today), and if we can do that we'll have more than a chance of getting something at Arsenal.”

We had this conversation watching the game in the pub. That attack at this stage of the game was the best form of defence.
It was arguably a bigger gamble to not change anything when players were beginning to flag. Stretching the game with a Vokes /Vydra partnership and giving Spurs something to think about at the other end might have been effective.
Much like we did last season when we won the matches at Southampton and West Ham (I understand Spurs are a better team than Southampton but we invited them on and they really scored have scored before they did).
