Re: todays footy
Rubbish , injury prone and is no better than what we have... no one would mention his name if he hadn't played here before...
We got Wells, Walters and Vydra instead, all far superior players and then there's Jeff.

Ings 2 goals so far. This is what can happen when your team has a Premier League class striker. Why on earth did we not re-sign him on loan? Politics?

Some say it's because he fell out with DycheStayingup wrote:Ings 2 goals so far. This is what can happen when your team has a Premier League class striker. Why on earth did we not re-sign him on loan? Politics?
Some say it's because of comments/actions when he left
Whatever the reason, the fact is he would walk into our starting 11, and fit the role perfectly.
The amount of cash we have wasted on trying to buy cheap "Do a jobs" or players playing out of position who haven't been good enough, makes our decision to look past ability in favour of playing safe, or saving a few quid more baffling.
( we haven't actually saved anything as we have had to buy 3 times probably costing in the region of 20m and minimum of 75k a week in wages, and we still find ourselves with no recognised number 10 who can influence the game )
Our repeated failings and mistakes in most of the recent transfer windows is staggering.

5 mins injury time
Re: todays footy
I think Southampton will be fine now Hughes has gone. This new bloke seems to have them organised and has lifted the crowd down there. With their quality they shouldn't really be in a relegation scrap anyway. It's looking like Fulham, Cardiff and Huddersfield are the 3 we need to finish above if we want to stay up.

Re: todays footy
Does anyone see any circumstance in which we score 3 against Arsenal? No? Me neither. We're so far off the capability of most of the other relegation candidates, it's quite to our credit that we're not completely adrift.

Re: todays footy
I disagree. If this team had played with the effort they've shown in the last two weeks all season, we'd be safely mid-table.thatdberight wrote:Does anyone see any circumstance in which we score 3 against Arsenal? Re: todays footy
Arsenal will play better next Saturday because Saints had a go and proved they aren't very good defensively. We will put everyone behind the ball, give them all the space and time they want and play for a nil nil.
Re: todays footy
I'm not sure about that. We've looked better defensively but to win games you have to score goals. The way we play relies completely on keeping clean sheets because we score so few goals.Kgun5 wrote:I disagree. Re: todays footy
Fantastic result for Southampton. With the players at their disposal, especially attacking ones they are capable of scoring goals which at least gives a team a fighting chance to win a game. We, meanwhile continue to squeeze the life out of a game with forwards as poor as there must have been for some time in this division.

Re: todays footy
This too. We are negative and boring. The opposing teams know we are no goal threat and not that great on the ball.jrgbfc wrote:I'm not sure about that. Re: todays footy
The margins would be thin, no doubt, but we showed it could be successful last year. I'm not really even promoting the system so much as I'm admonishing the lack of effort in several matches this year. However, you may be right that I overstated. Perhaps "safely" was a little much. I believe we'd be ahead of Newcastle, though.jrgbfc wrote:I'm not sure about that. We've looked better defensively but to win games you have to score goals. Re: todays footy
Southampton are light years ahead of us in terms of attacking play, suspect defensively but then so were we until a few games ago.
Agree with the above that we need to be finishing above Fulham, Cardiff and Huddersfield. Everyone else is out of reach for us.

Re: todays footy
We have Wood Vokes Vydra and Barnes. Pair any of them and what six goals between then max. I think without a proven striker regardless of wages we are down.
Re: todays footy
We managed it fine last season and Crystal palace are doing ok this despite having useless strikers.jrgbfc wrote:I'm not sure about that. Re: todays footy
Goals cost money, however I think they are all capable of scoring enough to keep us up.bfcjg wrote:We have Wood Vokes Vydra and Barnes. Pair any of them and what six goals between then max. I think without a proven striker regardless of wages we are down.
However what won't happen with any of them is you're asking them to score nearly every decent chance they get, as we create so little.
Wood looks to have gone backwards since last season, Vydra hadn't been given a chance ( maybe not up to it like Wells/Walters/Juke/Hennings/Vossen/Sordell that have all gone before ) that leaves us with the 500k pair of Barnes and Vokes, which for all their might and effort are not going to keep you up season on season. We haven't moved forwards in the forward department for about 4 or 5 transfer windows.
The new 3 year deal for Vokes told us all we needed to know about our style And what we were planning for going forward IMO.

Also ironic that another ex got the winner.
Re: todays footy
We are the only team - of lower Prem teams- not to have moved forward. The others have. Even the two outfield players we bought dont get picked. We've gone backwards if anything.thatdberight wrote:Does anyone see any circumstance in which we score 3 against Arsenal? No? Me neither. Re: todays footy
At some point our game plan has to move on from keeping a clean sheet and nicking one from somewhere. That will only work for so long before you get found out. Unfortunately I don't think Dyche has any interest or the courage to leave his comfort zone and progress.Spijed wrote:We managed it fine last season and Crystal palace are doing ok this despite having useless strikers.
Re: todays footy
Didn't we have a go against Liverpool and very nearly got a draw near the end. Then came up against a Brighton side who had little interest in scoring.
Funny how those two games suddenly get wiped from the memory banks of some.

Rubbish keeping in both games. I imagine there's plenty of over analysis of goalkeepers taking place on the respective forums.ElectroClaret wrote:Rubbish keeping.
Re: todays footy
Our last three games offer us some comfort and encouragement as our performances
have improved. But one has to say from a very, very low base previously.
Especially defensively but we all know that to stay up you have to win games and get
those 3 points on the board. Draws aren't enough.
Can we grind out another 7 wins or so to give us a chance?
It's not impossible but at present probably not likely with the current team/squad
without a number of things happening.
Namely Wood, Defour, Brady and one or two others finding their top form for a considerable number of games
especially in those games we have to win that already are 6 pointers.
Yes, it's possible we could get two or three in January who may make a difference
but I don't think many are putting much on that happening. Hopefully it will and won't be too late. Time will tell.
Have to say I did catch myself thinking (after checking out the Southampton game/result/scorers)
that we would be fine with Ings and Austin up front but that's wishful thinking at best.
Can't help but think it's going to be a very difficult 21 games to come.
Far from certain my nerves will take it.
It might turn out that the fans have a big say in it especially in those games we have to win.
The team will need all the support it can get.
