What are Southampton playing at?

Post by Quickenthetempo » Sun Dec 16, 2018 3:54 pm

Everyone knows the small clubs can't beat the big clubs and they shouldn't even try to.
Will someone have a word with this new manager please.

Sky won't be happy.

Shows what is possible if you have some decent attacking players and are willing to have a go. You don't need to spend millions of pounds. What did Ings, Austin and Redmond cost Southampton? Not much by today's standards.

Shows what a decent couple of forwards can do. Or in other words, what can happen when you give the ball to attack minded players.

Because most of our Directors take our fans for granted sadly, been the case since the Bob Lord days don't know if he was the first though.

3 games in 6 days for Arsenal, and our game being the last of those early Saturday after hopefully a tough derby game v Spurs on Wednesday night.

I'd say there's no better time to play them.

Back to the OP, any manager with an ounce of knowledge picks a team that best suits the players they have.

Our better players are the ones who are more defensively suited.
You can probably count on 1 hand ( maybe just 2 fingers) our naturally attacking players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet going forwards with intent.
It is also a reason for the lack of times we break the last line of the opposition's defence, and the lack of penalties

Love hearing stories of clubs that don't always treat their fans as customers squeezing every penny they can from them, it restores my faith in humanity.

Even Accy can afford to give 1000 shirts away to the local kids, BFC charge for our kids to do anything and everything before then pleading for match day volunteers.

Look after the future when and where you can, you never know when you may need them.

What about Barry Kilby and the Season ticket refunds for all the Season Ticket holders when we got promotion in 2009... £450 wasn't to be sneezed at

Redmond £10 million in 2016, aged 22 from Norwich. Maddison a very similar type player aged 21 cost £20million this season from Norwich.
Austin cost £4million in a 2016 QPR fire sale, a £15m deal to West Ham previously fell through the owner saying he 'had no knees'.

That's to say nothing of wages, of which we're the 3rd lowest in the league. Also it requires the players want to come to us.

Arsenal had a makeshift central defence with Kolscieny playing his first game of the season. I quite like him but thought Arsenal's defence looked like Wenger's days and Kolscieny was responsible for two if not all three of the goals.

That cross from Long though was superb.

If you count the parachute payments we've had 5 years of TV money now. Paying 20 million for players certainly shouldn't be out of our price range.

Arsenal having a makeshift defence when they play us will be irrelevant if we perform like we did yesterday at Wembley.

Hardly any attacks of note and zero shots on target tells it's own story.

MOTD will doubtless have little to say about soton, and focus instead on the injuries or some such crap that stopped the gunners winning.

As usual some having a go at our Board for being tight. How many other clubs provide free (yes free) season tickets for under 10 year old supporters.Think Southampton charge £50.

We’ve had Premier League income now for 10 years without a gap. 2009-10 when we were relegated and then 4 years of parachutes as it was then. We got promoted in the last of those years.

Have already pointed out the £multimillion give away of season ticket refunds in 2009 ..... some should think a bit before commenting on Soton giving away a few free beers.....

Also this about £20,000,000+ players its the wage bills that take the megabucks not the signing of the players....

A player on £35k a week is near 2 million a year thats just one player, therefore running a squad multiply by 23, then think about every day running costs plus the staff wages etc etc .... its no wonder the number of Clubs that are/have gone tits up.......
It ain't rocket science

We could have afforded Maddison this summer. Could’ve afforded any of them this summer really, but wages an issue with the others.

To be fair, the fact our club gave away 7,000 season tickets in 2009-10 was a shock to our club. They’d not truly planned for it, and it was brought about becausenof falling season ticket sales. We did it for 2 seasons.

Of course Barry Kilby planned for it .... if we hadn't won at Wembley he wouldn't have given them away lol.

Winning promotion did 2 other things as well ... we bought back the ground :) and found out that Owen Coyle was a judas ;)

Very true, we could probably pay £20m for a player however the wage structure would be broken which would not be a good thing. The other point that is very often overlooked is that Burnley are not an attractive proposition. Whenever Ings scores this season the usual posts about us not re-signing him. Wages and he used to play for us aside, why would he choose Burnley over Southampton ?

That , he ran down his contract and he more or less downed tools in his last season are a few more reasons!

Ings is another who can do no wrong in some eyes.

Bear in mind Southampton also recouped 75 million for VVD,plus all the other rising stars they have made good profit on over the last 5-6 years.

Wages are the biggest issue if we were to drop the last thing we need is a bloated wage bill, even accounting for parachute payments our income would reduce drastically in the event of relegation.

Do we even know if Ings wanted to return this summer?

The board didn’t offer free season tickets out of good will. It was a way to encourage people to buy tickets. They were as shocked as we were that we went up, and I bet they hated giving us free tickets

IMO messing about with defensive 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 formations will end in tears (relegation).

Let's get back to our best formation 4-4-2 and get some shots on target.

Surely (in common with other clubs) contractually, players wages are considerably reduced in the event of relegation

But yes, wages would still be a big issue.
Or is it not the case that wages are dropped?

I assume BFC still have relegation clauses in player's contract's,some clubs don't Sunderland paying daft money in League One being a prime example.

However i'd also guess our top earner's are making double what they were in 2016,so even in the event of relegation clauses, the % of wages/turnover will be higher,so giving us less wriggle room if we wanted to spend if in the Championship.

Rovers were paying a few silly money 3 years after relegation too "Jordan Rhodes" to name but one....

Is it still the case that we counter the salary issue by building a sizeable one-off payment, effectively a signing-on fee, into the deal?

I'm pretty sure this was the case with Brady and probably others.

I'm assuming - and I know nothing about football finance - this makes good business sense in that affordability can be relatively easily assessed within the current budget and then there's no ongoing obligation should the worst (relegation) happen.

Wages are the biggest issue if we were to drop the last thing we need is a bloated wage bill, even accounting for parachute payments our income would reduce drastically in the event of relegation.
Do we even know if Ings wanted to return this summer?
Exactly my point, transfer speculation is so fruitless.
£100million in TV money = £100 million to spend on signing fees...

Deserved win Southampton.

2-2 kept passing and getting the ball forwards even without their 2 best attacking options, Ings and Redmond.

Would we have done the same?
