Time Wasting

Post by California Colner » Mon Dec 17, 2018 4:05 am

I know every team does it, some more than others.
I thought the spuds game was a little to much and Hart got our two outfield players booked because of his constant time wasting. Then when we go a goal behind he’s running after the ball when it goes behind the goal and getting loads of stick from the crowd. Brighton did it with us last week, but they got away with it. is this part of the tactics, just like it is to dive in the penalty box.
What’s everybody’s thoughts on this.

It's pathetic and not in the spirit of the game. That said, until officials clamp down on it nothing will change.

been going on since football was invented. Thank god they changed to the back pass rule, it was even more painful before that

Don't agree with it to be honest whether it's us doing it or other teams. Thought our antics on Saturday were pathetic.

Hart is more subtle than Pope. He’s truly cringeworthy!

Providing the ref adds the time wasted on at the end let them get on with it.

In the Liverpool home game, I can't remember which Liverpool player it was but he was substituted and sauntered the whole way off, shook hands with loads of players and made no effort to bugger off. Now when a team like us are winning and tried to saunter off the Ref would be all over it like a tramp on a cold bag of chips by the park bench fighting off the seagulls and his own dog...I digress... but for me it is just another example of inconsistency which raises my blood pressure! It's dead easy to stop. If a team is delaying the restart for time wasting, then reverse the decision - if it's a free kick or throw in, it becomes a free kick or throw in the other way; if it's Matt Ryan or Joe Hart taking too long over a goal kick, it becomes a corner; and so on.

And as for subs, when the fourth official puts up the numbers on the electric board, let a timer start at the same time as the numbers go up. If the man coming off has not left the field in 15 seconds (let him leave in any direction, not necessarily at half way), then he still has to go off, but the sub can't come on until the next break in play.

The ref will be glad he gets time to have a breather in all honesty.
50yr olds trying to keep up with these athletes isn't easy.

We did exactly what Brighton did the other week to us.

In short, we haven't got a leg to stand on if do it and complain when others do it.

There is taking time and downright wasting. The Spurs match was the first time I have seen us do the latter.

It is not Burnley and goes against all that Mr D has stood for. It is a form of cheating and a snubbing if the crowd. We pay to see action not inaction.

Well Ian, I only watch us on TV and we are one of the worst at time wasting.

The problem is it works. I don't think the full time is ever added on.

Spurious injuries are another issue. Defenders pretend to be hurt, particularly head injuries, in their own penalty area to break up an attack. Then they touch their head as if they think they might be bleeding. It's laughable but so difficult for a ref. It's yet another example of the abuse of the Laws for a team's advantage. Managers and coaches are to blame.

You obviously weren't paying much attention to Nick Pope last season then?

Teams will do whatever it takes to beat us. We should respond in kind.

I know we do it and at times it's blatant, but ironically I thought on Saturday it really wasn't at all bad and the ref booked Brady when Kane was actually standing close by making it dangerous for him to take the free kick immediately and Bardsley seemed to have only just picked up the ball and the yellow card was out. All match their ball boys were running to throw balls back to players to hurry the game up, but after they scored Tripps very obviously told one lad who collected a ball to put it back down again and to back off and to take his time. I do understand that tbh, but there really is a lack of consistency and the Ryan fiasco last week shows that.
(And as an aside, if we're going to get 2 soft yellows for what appeared to be next to nothing in the time wasting stakes, why isn't deliberate handball to cut short a promising attack a yellow? I'd love the ref to explain that one.)

I wish the powers-that-be would do something about it but they don't seem to care. I have a feeling it's because the telly boys don't want anything done about it. I would imagine it's quite difficult putting a live broadcast together and they like the lengthy breaks in play as it gives them time for their "expert" analysis or billion replays of supposedly "controversial" decisions. It's interesting how when you watch a game on TV you don't really notice the time-wasting but when you watch at the ground it's unbelievably bad.

It's a real shame because the game would be so much better for it. Teams would realise that, with the ball in play so much more, there would be little point in setting up ultra-defensively. They'd have to attack more.
