Christmas Pop Music
Queen's effort just came up thanks to YouTube's all-too-predictable algorithm.
I like it but it's a bit too relieved rather than joyous to be one of the best Christmas songs.

Re: Christmas Pop Music
I like this one by Jethro Tull, it's how I imagine the good people of Summerisle would celebrate this time of year..

Whenever I listen to this song, the chord at 2:24 always sets my teeth on edge. I appreciate he’s trying to use a secondary dominant to modulate back the original key, but it doesn’t work.Rowls wrote:This is better - Wizzard

I like it very much but maybe I'm a bit biased as we've just seen Bohemian Rhapsody at the Cinema, which incidentally I thought was a superbly done film of Queen.Rowls wrote:Queen's effort just came up thanks to YouTube's all-too-predictable algorithm.

Christmas music is depressing. Imagine working in a shop and listening to the same ten or so songs on repeat for a whole month.

Re: Christmas Pop Music
The late great Greg Lake without a doubt for me. As a massive ELP and King Crimson fan at the time I was stunned to hear a Christmas single by Greg but it just works on every level. His superb vocal over the slightly pompous music is a treat but the lyrics make it special, it's a kind of 'anti-Christmas' song in many ways and strips away a lot of the pretend magic and closes with the best line ever in a Christmas song:
'Halleluah, Noel, be it heaven or hell, the Christmas we get we deserve.'
'Halleluah, Noel, be it heaven or hell, the Christmas we get we deserve.'

Re: Christmas Pop Music
The greatest Christmas song ever, is Johnny Mathis "Do you hear what I hear".
You don't need a debate or a 'Top 40' channel 4 marathon, that's fact. And it's in the greatest Christmas film ever, Gremlins, as if you needed any more evidence.

Re: Christmas Pop Music
When Jethro Tull was mentioned above, I thought it would be this one (a throw-away track from the excellent 1972 "Living in the Past" album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzH0O44xs9s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - a bit of "hippy idealism" maybe.
My nostalgia-based favourite (from the Danish/Dutch pairing of Nina & Frederik), hit the charts around Christmas 1960 (the Leadbelly household had a copy for the newly acquired little portable record player) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qudi6JqE-M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Christmas Pop Music
Not strtictly Christmas, but I think this fits the bill. Saw them last week at the
Philharmonic music room in Liverpool and they were just as good as when I first
saw them in 1972 when the support band was Genesis. Brilliant night out.
Enjoy.

Agree. Great song but I can't bring myself to put it on my Xmas playlist as it just reminds me of what he did, especially the line "you'll never guess what you've got from me"

Agree that Fairytale of New York is king but Christmas in LA by The Killers is a great track and the video for it is the only thing watchable ever made featuring Owen Wilson.

Mogwai and Gorky's - nice.
I'll throw in this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A72bls1DoIk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Plus Bruce Springsteen's 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' and all of the Phil Spector Christmas album.

I heard Wombling Merry Christmas in a shop today and had to stay till it had finished. Forgot how good it is!
