Paul Stewart was the one that first sprang to mind for me.
I remember being excited by the signing and perceiving him as being an established premier league player.
Did bugger all.

There were no established Premier League players then, football had just been invented by Sky a couple of years previous.

I know but I was 12 and easily impressed by the glitz and glam of Sky's new creation.

Brian Easton probably looked most out of his depth. He might have looked alright in the 86/87 side but I'm not convinced.

Yep, David Jones Mk1 WAS bad! And I witnessed Nimani's 20 minute cameo at the Reebok and realised we'd obviously thrown the towel in re avoiding the drop!

There are certainly a few but I suppose that applies to all teams. As mentioned earlier Nimani's cameo at Bolton plumbed new depths previously achieved by David Jones. Mark Rhodes must be a contender along with the Welsh keeper we had in the 90's,Wayne something who typified 'the accident waiting to happen' to perfection.

10000000000000000000000% Amadou Sanokho who looked literally like Cotterill was playing him for us to just laugh at.
Whoever he was, he was not a footballer - looked like someone from Tesco had somehow walked onto the pitch. Hilarious.

Nick Pickering yup deffo a Donkey.
From his wikipedia page ....
In his first season in Sunderland's first team he had the honour of being voted both the club's young player of the year and player of the year by the fans...
Also got an England Cap v Australia
Ended his playing career at the Clarets with 4 matches for Burnley under Jimmy Mullen ....
My memory of him is leaning against the wall of the Bob Lord stand while every other sub warming up.....

David Jones. 6 foot 4 until he went up for a header, when he became 5 foot 8.
To add to the above names, most of the 86/7 squad with a few notable exceptions: Leebrook, Heesom, Heggarty, Gallagher, Chippendale, Rhodes, Caughey, Regis, Devine, Lawrence, Malley. I would include Paul Stewart, not for lacking ability but simply insulting the fans by not being arsed and to please Tony, Roger Hansbury, the worst Burnley keeper he has ever seen......

Re: Biggest donkey of all time?
He wouldn't have been if his last minute free kick had gone in instead of hitting the post. Norwich's game had finished and if that had gone in we would have been in the play-offs instead of Norwich. Who knows what would have happened after that. He wasn't that bad to be honest, just not as good as he had been.Top Claret wrote:Got to be Gazza, he was an over paid waste of space

Did it hit the post or was it a great save? My memory feels it was the latter, but definitely correct that we'd have made the play offs if it had gone in as Norwich had scored late and edged us out on goal difference right at the death. Re: Biggest donkey of all time?
In recent times - Nathan Delfoneso
I remember watching him play for us and realising that if I was fit, I'd be better than him.
He is a striker, he's played professional for 16 years and in 240 league appearances he has scored 30 goals - that's like 1 goal every 18 apps. I could've done that. I don't know how he has carved out a career as a professional footballer.

We had some $hit in the 80s that's for sure. Gerry Gow immediately came to mind for me. Special mentions to Wanye Entwistle, Barry Powell, Peter Haddock, Les Lawrence, Phil Murphy, Darren Heasom, Tony Hancock, Phil Malley, Joe Neenan , Joe Gallagher,Neil Whatmore
I really could go on
Who was the blond lad Bond signed from Southampton, a centre back, who Bond later said "He was a mistake and he simply couldn't play football"

Hard to judge the biggest donkey as I was too young to remember how poor most of the players were in Div 4 and the Div 2. Jon Flanagan takes some beating in recent times though.

Me! Michael Williams was really bad, the crowd literally groaned when the ball came near him. Never seen anyone so uncomfortable on a football pitch.

Nick Pickering. Remember him chasing a ball down the touchline and the linesman outpacing him.
Ian Helliwell. I had completely forgotten about him until we got chatting to a woman on holiday who said her brother used to play for Burnley. I think the look on my face when she said the name gave it away!!

Could we both be right and did the goalkeeper touch it onto the post. Either way I remember 'celebrating' as I, along with most others I think, thought it was going in. Re: Biggest donkey of all time?
HertsClaret and TheWellerNut bring back some terrible memories with those lists of names and Mondsley beat me to it with the Nick Pickering/lino incident which I remember only too shockingly well.
Most of the obvious candidates mentioned already but to be fair to most of them they were lower league journeymen to start with - I haven't seen Mark Ford mentioned yet. Add to the list Tony Hancock, Lee Howey, Joe Neenan and whoever was in goal for the 0-6 v Hereford. Counselling has erased the name from my memory.

Re: Biggest donkey of all time?
I was right behind the free kick and I seem to remember he saved it. Gascoigne had 2 free kicks near the end of that game both of which nearly went in and put us in the play offs. Think it was 2 years in a row we finished 7th under Stan. Was the keeper called Hedman ? He was definitely Scandinavian.houseboy wrote:Could we both be right and did the goalkeeper touch it onto the post. Gazza cannot be described as worst player we have ever had. He showed glimpses of what he could do but he needed to play to get fit and I am pretty sure Stan had him on the bench for some of the games. He got paid £200k for what I think was an 8 week period. That was a lot of money back then.
As for worst player - too many to mention down the years but I will go for Nick Pickering not only cos he was a shocking player for us but also because he told me to f-off when Huddersfield beat us 2-0 at their old ground Leeds Road !!
