Lockerbie : Thirty Years On

Post by ElectroClaret » Fri Dec 21, 2018 11:57 am

Thirty years ago today. Some relatives I have in Scotland who live quite near Lockerbie
heard the blast and the noise of the plummeting wreckage clearly and thought it was thunder.
Awful events.
There's still debate whether it was Libya or Iran responsible.

Anyone else recall it?

I certainly remember it. I worked more recently with a fellow from Lockerbie.

I worked at the time with someone from Lockerbie. I find it difficult to believe it is 30 years ago.

Had that plane blown up a few minutes earlier, it wouldn't have been far away from being over Burnley and Pendle......

A mate of mine was drafted in to fly the CAA, Police and recovery teams around the area. He said it was one of the toughest missions he had in his Air Force career.

Remember it well. It was our 14th wedding anniversary and each year since we always take time out on this date to remember the victims of that appalling tragedy.

Yes, certainly remember it, my late father-in-law was in a mountain rescue organisation at the time and they were drafted into help the search operation in the area.

I recall John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols) mentioning in an interview that he and his wife should have been on the Lockerbie flight but missed it due to some delay with their luggage which meant they were too late to catch the flight.

One of the first disasters I remember quite vividly, from childhood. Probably in the main because an elderly lady that lived nearby had relatives who were on board and partly because we were due to fly a few days later to go skiing. I remember being worried about flying, which I never had been before.

There’s a few celebrity tales about the 9/11 planes.
Seth McFarlane missed his plane at Logan Airport by half an hour(due to a diary mix up), and that flight was flown into the WTC.
Also the Four Tops were due to fly back to LA after a tour had ended, but the after show party was a heavy one and the band overslept. They also missed one of the doomed flights.

Flying to New York that day on a different flight. Arrived at JFK to a very strange atmosphere.

The flight was barely three quarters full and the Four Tops missed the flight due to a late recording for a Top of the Pops edition. One of those on the ill-fated flight was the original bass player with Steve Harley's band.
