£76 million ... what would you do with it
£76 million ... what would you do with it
Hearing about the Boston builder who's just found his winning lottery ticket behind his van's visor I told my other half that I'd no idea how I could conceivably imagine how to spend £76 million.
Then I applied myself and said actually I'd buy all my immediate relatives a house each for £1m (reducing my lot to £70m) then a second home in the Lakes, Burnley, French Alps and the Caribbean then throw in a Yacht for good measure, reckoning that this would take me down to around £65 million. And all she could say was that I was acting wreckless and wasn't thinking about the upkeep !
Bonkers. Maybe money simply just doesn't make you happy afterall. But in the words of Spike Milligan .... I wouldn't mind being given the chance to find out.
How would you spend it ?

Do you think we could invest in a "20 a season" premier league striker?
How much would that cost?

If you buy yhe family houses they're liable for tax on them; better to make close family syndicate shareholders prior to claiming. If you want a yacht then I've got one that I'm peed off with this week and yes upkeep's what has screwed a lot of pools/lottery winners: Buy the house/cars/yachts for £x million but then you still need to be generating £y million each year to maintain/insure them and pay the service charges etc.Espia wrote:... buy all my immediate relatives a house each for £1m ...a second home in the Lakes, Burnley, French Alps and the Caribbean then throw in a Yacht for good measure...wasn't thinking about the upkeep !

I’d retire and travel. Would be lovely to take the financial stress out of friends and relatives lives.

Invest it in something, primarily a business of some sort so I'd have something to keep me out of mischief.
Put some away for the kids.
Then I'd write a list of who's close family and who my closest friends are.
Then stick to that list of people you're going to look after.
For example, my brother would get naff all, whilst my closest friend wouldn't have to worry about money again.

A very short list of family would get asked what they want and get it. Then I'm off round the world. Not in luxury so my cash pile would still be growing.

I’d just live out of a backpack and constantly travel the world doing anything and everything. Fly into a country and out to another when bored and after seeing everything there is to see.
Then probably just buy Graham Branch and pay him to live in a nice house here - just so I could come home and laugh that i’d done it.

I'd spend 70m on fast cars, drink and loose women, the rest I'd probably squander.

Tax? Lottery winnings aren't taxed, and gifts to family aren't taxed either. Unless you die too soon and the gifts might still come under Inheritance Tax rules.AfloatinClaret wrote:If you buy yhe family houses they're liable for tax on them; better to make close family syndicate shareholders prior to claiming. In the highly unlikely event that you are a close relative of mine, please don't buy me a house for £1m, because I like the house I have got now. I'll take the money please.Espia wrote:Hearing about the Boston builder who's just found his winning lottery ticket behind his van's visor I told my other half that I'd no idea how I could conceivably imagine how to spend £76 million.

Honestly?
Give about 3/4 of it to charity.
Who needs that sort of cash for themselves?

Re: £76 million ... what would you do with it
The more financially comfortable you are, the less money like that matters. If you're with the woman/man of your dreams, can afford to go on holiday once a year, can afford to eat out now and again and you're happy - do you actually need that sort of money? Look at what happened to the Leicester chairman and co. So long as you're not skint, it's a bonus. It's not a necessity.

I would buy up all the green space around me, to stop it all going to houses. Had lots of houses, and not much green left.

Re: £76 million ... what would you do with it
I would. I'd still have about £15 million. You have to question your life choices if that isn't enough for you to comfortably survive. I mean you could buy two twixs from the Turf for every match for the rest of the season and still have change.
Guess I'm just wired up differently

First thing I did was google the story to see if I knew him. My wife's side lives in Boston having migrated en-masse from London in the early 1980's.
Although I know quite a few builders, sadly not this one so no need to rush down to accidently bump into an 'old mate'
So if I were to win I would become a philanthropist but make sure me and mine were okay first.

Re: £76 million ... what would you do with it
It's difficult to conceive what I'd actually do as I suppose the moment/feeling of such an event in your life might alter your plans or thoughts.
But....
If I did win, I think I'd probably bank most of it, finish all the DIY stuff I need to do to the house myself as I actually enjoy it. Set up trust funds for all of the family's kids, probably £50,000 each for university, house deposit, first car & insurance for when they turn 18.
The most lavish thing would be to buy a house in Cornwall for holidays & family to use.
Probably a new car, but a sensible one like an estate or something useful for a family. One with all the bells and whistles, but understated, not something that screams that your loaded.
Mainly it's things I'd like to do now but can't. Having property abroad, a boat or going mental would be odd for me, as I've no interest in doing it now. Call me boring, but just because you can do it, doesn't mean you have to. It's easy to fritter the money away, many have on stuff like that.

Some exciting folks on here.
Most are worrying about tax or are so tight they're creaming about buying a house in Cornwall.

Big villa on a greek island with a huge games room with a massive tv for football. Air conditioning throughout and an infinity pool. Outdoor entertaining area. Mercedes Benz . Big fridge.

Build a huge golden statue of myself, a diamond encrusted toilet, a fortified palace with a small army of elite black ops special forces ready to shoot any peasants getting too close, a large diamond studded gold collar for my pitbull .... I realise all you virtue signalling types will pretend you would spend it on poor 'needy' wasters, but you know if it came to it you'd soon forget all that selfless bullsh1t.

Given his versatility though I'd bet Branchy would do a good job. A sound investment. IMO.bfccrazy wrote:I’d just live out of a backpack and constantly travel the world doing anything and everything. Fly into a country and out to another when bored and after seeing everything there is to see.

I’d give most of it away to family, friends and charities. However, I’d keep enough to make life a bit easier than it is already.

As long as you p*ss it away in the UK, 20% will go to the worlds biggest charity anyway - HMRC.
