How do shots on target against us compare to last year?
How do shots on target against us compare to last year?
All this talk of Joe Hart being the issue. What would make that easier to understand is how to the number of shots on target we have faced so far this season compare the the season before?
If they are the same or similar, then Joe is the issue. If they are a lot higher, then the problem lies elsewhere.
Anybody know?

We’ve faced way more shots this season
Mainly cos of the left back who should be left back in the dressing room for the rest of the season

Re: How do shots on target against us compare to last year?
The shots we did concede last year were deliberately made to be savable by funneling players to shoot at our GK.

Do we know that for sure? Do we have stats to prove it?Hibsclaret wrote:We’ve faced way more shots this season

Found this page, though it doesn't have the exact stats I want, it does show the number of saves per team.
2017/18 - https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top ... aves?se=79" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2018/19 - https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top ... ves?se=210" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
We were 4th for number of saves for the 2017/18 season with 122 saves for the full season.
We are 1st for number of saves for the 2018/19 season with 74 saves for half a season.
That probably suggests Joe is not the issue, since our number of saves is higher this season than last when extrapolated for a full season.
Clearances are also recorded on that site, and they are roughly equivalent to both seasons. Nothing suggests we are facing more shots.

Oh, that interesting... Looking at the stats, we are no worse at Dispossessions and are slightly better at Tackles, but Shots are where the issues lie.
This year we are 20th on Shots with 161 so far.
Last year we were 15th on Shots with 378.
Suggests we aren't creating enough is what is causing the issues.

Using your numbers...
This season: 74 saves and 41 conceded = 64% save percentage (must be one of lowest in the league)
Last season: 122 saves and 39 conceded = 77% save percentage (one of highest in the league)
If you're gonna use stats, at least use them correctly.

A more simple stat:Steddyman wrote:Oh, that interesting... Looking at the stats, we are no worse at Dispossessions and are slightly better at Tackles, but Shots are where the issues lie.

goals scored after 19 games last season 16, this season 17.
goals conceded after 19 games last season 15, this season 41.
It's defending that is very clearly the issue.

Thanks. No need to be arsey, I wasn't saying I was the expert on this and was looking for others interpretation of the stats hence be asking the question in the first place.Claretto wrote:Using your numbers...

Using that interpretation, it does indeed look like Joe is a big part of the problem. Though without knowing the type of shots we are facing, that may not be a fair assertion. For example if 80% of those shots was from outside the box last season, and this season it is much lower, then it isn't fair to point the finger at the Joe's save percentage.
Re: How do shots on target against us compare to last year?
Stats don’t state where the shots are coming from. I certainly know Pope didn’t allow free headers on his 6 yard line.

If only there were a stat that evaluated the quality of shots faced...
