Arfield, Boyd, Marley & Barton

Post by SpringHillClaret » Thu Dec 27, 2018 4:25 am

I wonder to what extent the loss of these players has hurt us this year? We have lost capable midfield players and undoubted lost a degree of aggression and bite in the middl of the field. However, have we also lost the dressing room spirit that was so important in recent seasons?
I’d take Arfield back in a heartbeat and foe me he is a player much better suited to us than Lennon or Brady have shown themselves to be.

Of those 4 only Arfield played last season, and we finished 7th, so you'd imagine we could do it without them.

Yes. We need players who can get up stand up and not give up the fight.

Wingbacks playing in front of full backs stopped the opposition getting a clear run at our back four.

Thanks Gawthorpe View,

I think it’s the players who enabled us to play a 442 come 424 with such ease is what I’m trying to say. Arfield and Boyd most certainly protected our full backs whilst Barton and Marney could control the middle of the field to great effect.

Apart from Scott the others had moved to pastures new before the start of last season but ... however did a legacy of their determination linger on? I just don’t see the same fight on the field this season.

Arfield would walk into our team at the moment. His versatility was invaluable and hasn't been replaced.

Arfield got dog's abuse from large sections of the crowd when he was here from those who thought he wasn't good enough for PL. Often his better performances were away from home. Although a four year deal back home was the main attraction, however, probably being the crowd's whipping post made the decision easier to make.

Marley eh? I think a stoned Bob Marley would walk into that side and he's been dead for over 30 years!

The only difference Arfield would have made this season is minimal we would still have the problem that our midfield has absolutely no creativity or pace.

Oh for a couple of Arfields in this team and I mean the ones from when he joined us, not that he was as bad as some made out towards the end.

I’m sure also that he didn’t have a drink appetite like one particular player has in our team at the moment.

Problem is Arfield and Boyd have been replaced by a better player in Lennon but instead of giving him the freedom to play his natural game Dyche still wants him to essentially do the same job Boyd and Arfield were doing.

I'd say shielded, but agree with your point entirely.

I've lost count of the number of times I had to explain and answer the question 'what do Boyd and Arfield do for the team?'

They also supplied more energy than the rest and ensured that 'never say die' spirit prevailed right to the final kick.
