Small club mentality.
Small club mentality.
What hurts as much as anything is knowing some of our fans would almost prefer be in the Championship than the Premier League, because it fits in with the “little old Burnley” vibe, which I hate.
Wolves fell to the same lows that we did, around the same time, and are now in the same league as us - but they don’t seem to be obsessed with the concept of simply being happy to be back at the top level.
Sad!

You do know that the Wolves owner is worth £5 billion don’t you? I’m not sure of Mike Garlick’s wealth but somehow I think it might be nearly £5 billion less. You’re right though, it is sad but that’s the reality.
Re: Small club mentality.
I also know that the same fans I refer to wouldn’t want that owner taking over our club.Rileybobs wrote:You do know that the Wolves owner is worth £5 billion don’t you? I also know that Wolves fans were targeting a return to the top level before Fosun took over.

Re: Small club mentality.
We have targeted promotion to the Premier League numerous times and have achieved it 3 times in the past 10 years. So what? I don’t know what point you’re trying to make and I’m not sure you even do. The comparison with Wolves is utterly bizarre.SGr wrote:I also know that the same fans I refer to wouldn’t want that owner taking over our club.

Re: Small club mentality.
Comparing fan mentalities is important when looking at how a club performs. Supporter pressure often influences ambition of clubs.ClaretTony wrote:Do you ever do anything other than criticise our club? No, don't bother answering because you don't. I can compare us to mega-rich Wolves because, as I said, their history is very comparable to ours, where they collapsed and fell to the same level. But the difference is they don’t use their lowest point as some sort of reference point.
Some of our supporters, as I also said, would rather us be so called “unable to compete” than be taken over by someone who could elevate the club.

Re: Small club mentality.
Right, so nothing to do with them having a mega rich owner who is chucking millions at it? I didn't know that. Maybe we should demand our club pay millions and millions for players with money we don't have then we can have the same ambition.SGr wrote:I can compare us to mega-rich Wolves because, as I said, their history is very comparable to ours

Read the rest of the comment before quoting. OP targets supporters who would not like us to have such owners and the money available.

Re: Small club mentality.
I’m sure almost every single supporter would love the club to have an owner as rich as Wolves. At the same time a lot of our supporters would rather the club be owned by someone who has the best long term intentions for the town and the club. The two aren’t mutually exclusive but there would rightly be concern if we were taken over by a benefactor from the Far East for example.SGr wrote:Read the rest of the comment before quoting. Re: Small club mentality.
That’s the problem, I don’t think a lot would. There’s a bizarre attachment with being small and “unable to compete”. Seeing things about how people miss the championship and would rather be back there. The “trust in Dyche” no matter what happens, etc. There’s this constant talk of the 4th division like it’s where we originally came from and that we somehow shouldn’t be at the top level. Extremely frustrating.Rileybobs wrote:I’m sure almost every single supporter would love the club to have an owner as rich as Wolves. We do have a small club mentality, that's cause we are a small club !!! Wolves have always been bigger than us and now they have boat loads of cash they will dine in the top 10 of the PL until the owner gets bored. Bit daft comparing anyone outside the top 6 to Wolves !

Re: Small club mentality.
I think people miss the Championsip because they miss seeing us win most weekends. If you polled our supporters and asked would they rather be a successful Championship team or a successful Premier League team I think almost 100% would opt for the latter.SGr wrote:That’s the problem, I don’t think a lot would. The people who hark back to the fourth division days just have a sense of perspective and reality which your opening post doesn’t.

Wolves and Burnley have remarkably intertwined histories. Highs and lows at roughly the same time. I’m not talking about the ownership, I’m talking about what their fans think of themselves, hence my point about before the current ownership took over.Vegas Claret wrote:We do have a small club mentality, that's cause we are a small club !!! Not a nonsense topic though, I firmly side with the concept that supporter pressure influences the ambition of clubs

Cardiff Fulham Newcastle and Huddersfield fans have a great mentality towards their respective teams and in the same sh!t as us and appear to be behind their teams....Burnley fans in the main especially on here seem apathetic and need to get behind the team.... We havn't got big money men behind us so therefore shouldn't really be competing with most teams in the Premier League...... but we have.
If we get relegated, so what, we enjoyed the ride and the biggest thrill is striving to get back there.

Years in top flight I like as a metric, I dare say we’ve spent longer than most if not all of those clubs mentioned at the top level throughout our history.

Surely reality has to account for something?! Should not fans of a club blacked by a Chinese Mega Corp aspire to greater success than the fans of a team owned by Mike Garlick? Should Man City not perceive themselves to be above Burnley FC? Should fans attitude not include a basic level of pragmatism when confronted with the vast inequality of wealth?SGr wrote:I’m comparing the supporters and their attitude to what they perceive to be the level their club should aspire to.
