He's also not even close to being the best winger we've ever had.
Apart from all those things, great post.

Wish we could see some B/W film coverage of some of his play and goals in Europe that I remember being shown at the time.
I'm sure I've seen it at some time on YT or somewhere but can't find it now.

Re: The best winger we ever had
Early 1973 I saw us win 3-0 at Villa, I think Keith Newton scored one.
Taffy ran them daft, they couldn't handle him.
I always thought over the years that it was a great wing display.
So LJ would always be a contender.

I always had Ralphie down as a go anywhere, do anything kind of player, but his antics down the wing always thrilled the crowd.ClaretTony wrote:He's right up there isn't he but I'd like to add Willie Morgan, Ralph Coates and Leighton James as potential candidates.
Dave Thomas was something special for me.

Re: The best winger we ever had
I can see why a slightly 'younger' audience might go for Glen Little. However he did play for us in the Championship, moving on to Reading where he did play at the highest level.
Leighton James, Ralph Coates could also be considered for that 'title' but John Connelly, Willie Morgan, Dave Thomas would also be in there for those who can think back that far.

Tough one to say who was actually the best, but I've gone for:
1. John Connelly
2. Leighton James
3. Ralph Coates
4. Willie Morgan
5. Dave Thomas
in that order.

Saint Glen of Little has to be first or second on the list for me and I do go back a long way. How come Terry Cochrane ain't on it? He had real twinkle toes and pace to burn too! Taffy in his heyday really was exciting and scared the opposition to death.

When I started watching Burnley it was Jack Chew and Peter Kippax.

We've certainly been blessed with some decent wingers in the past. Tony Morley another.

Terry Cochrane played mainly in the 2nd Divi. and a Northern Irish International. 76-78.

If you check his appearances for us it actually isn't that many compared to others which is a bit surprising, but you always felt something exciting would happen when he got the ball at his feet.South West Claret. wrote:Terry Cochrane played mainly in the 2nd Divi. and a Northern Irish International. 76-78.

John Connelly was both a goal-scoring and goal-making machine, scored the 1st Burnley goal I ever saw in 1-3 home defeat to West Ham, August 1959. Scored a bagful in 59/60 championship team along with Robson and Pointer.

Re: The best winger we ever had
I should say Willie Morgan after all the complimentary tickets I got off him. I can honestly say that of all the players we sold, especially during that era the most upsetting was losing Willie. However Taffy, is for me our best winger.

We've had some very good ones and obviously it depends on the era.
But still, the correct answer is Leighton James.

Connelly - brilliant on the wing, fast with great ability and temperament. England also played him like a midfielder when needed.

I can’t comment on him as a player as he’d retired long before I was born but I can say that Jack Chew was a lovely bloke.lancastrian wrote:When I started watching Burnley it was Jack Chew and Peter Kippax.

I saw all of the above play for Burnley and would rate Connelly at the top. Could play either wing equally well, power in both feet, could get to the byline or cut in and unleash a powerful shot. If memory serves, there was a telly commercial at the time saying “John Collier, John Collier the window to watch”. Longside fans changed it to “John Connelly, John Connelly the winger to watch”.
Damn, we sure had a production line of top shelf players back in the day!

Re: The best winger we ever had
obviously didn't see him,but surely Louie Page must be a contender with his record
Re: The best winger we ever had
John Connelly, right wing, left foot, nice chap, good fish and chips.
Re: The best winger we ever had
Glenn little with pace would have been a world beater but sadly hadn't got it.
Loved the young trevor Steven playing aga8nst hardened pros. Tommy Hutchison was way past his best when he played as was waddle but both had class.
Ralph and Leighton were as good as a one at the time.
JC could play either wing and scored loads for a winger.
Willie Morgan was like me whereas JC was more like my dad.
Going for Willie.

Name like that might raise eyebrows.

Re: The best winger we ever had
Steve Kindon, I will never forget that game away at Crystal Palace it was televised and in one unforgettable move he galloped down the left wing crossed the ball but couldn’t stop so he ran around the back of the goal and got straight back on the pitch, never seen anyone do that again to this day.
Re: The best winger we ever had
Bob Kelly was said to be the best out of our pre-war players in terms of skill. I think when we look at “best ever” anyone, it’s impossible to properly compare players of different vintages though.
