Ashley Westwood
He’s just putting his baton away but I’ve heard he’ll be ready to continue conducting the Clarets orchestra in our next Premier League game against Fulham.
Outstanding!

Conductors baton or relay baton?
Either way he is good enough for both!

Re: Ashley Westwood
He was bloody brilliant tonight. The strong glue that was desperately needed a few weeks back. A real positive player, him and Cork are hitting some good form at a vital time for us.

Followed up Sundays brilliant performance with another fantastic showing tonight. He's just started doing things much quicker which, in turn, speeds the players up around him.

Re: Ashley Westwood
I think just having an improvement in our first touch and playing some passing moves Westy has looked so much more influential. Wood has found his touch, Cork playing it simple and being available, and finally having a technical player in McNeil has helped Westy keep possession which has helped us overall. Dyche just mentioned in the interviews that the front 2 were excellent tonight and against West Ham and their hold up play has helped our midfield just shift up a little more helping the midfield in general. I'm happy for Westy as he is a good player and one who is instrumental for us in keeping possession and ultimately manufacturing good attacking play.

Re: Ashley Westwood
As quoon says, great tonite. Don’t wanna take anything away from him, always liked him, but he has been poor so far this season.
Coming into form just when we need it. However, he’s not doing us a favour here, he’s been poor and is now starting not to be.
Hope it continues. He and Jc have been great last two or three games.
3 against Fulham and the table looks a whole lot better.

MOM for me.
Two feet, doesn't shy from a tackle, doesn't take unnecessary touches and always shows for the ball. Spot on for me.

Re: Ashley Westwood
assist tonight, 1 assist against WHU and it should have been 2 - no coincidence we are creating chances as we've moved another 10 yards further up the pitch.
Re: Ashley Westwood
and why, you ask, have we pushed 10 yards further up the pitch?
Possibly because we have a keeper who 1) the back four have full confidence in and 2) is constantly on said back four to "get out"
Maybe? maybe not? I know my thinking on the topic.

For me he treads this nice line of the most optimistic percentage pass. He doesn't play safe 5 yarders. He doesn't play ridiculous showboat stuff. His passes are a balance of incisiveness and completion accuracy.
I really like watching him play!

All the analysis and statistical stuff involved in football in modern day era and we just needed a keeper who shouts get out. We might as get rid of the analysis side of things.Lord_Bob wrote:and why, you ask, have we pushed 10 yards further up the pitch?

Re: Ashley Westwood
Bonkers
He's been dogshit (like most of them have, apart from Hart and hendrick)
Like the rest, for whatever reason, he's been massively influential in the last two games. Whatever the reason, its fantastic.
Its perfectly possible that we've managed to create partnerships all over the pitch that are just starting to work, or it could be the realisation that its a new year and we've got to perform. It could be a lot of things.
I don't really care to be honest as its the managers job to get the best out of whats he got, and his decisions have resulted in us looking a lot less like relegation certainties.
But watching us in the last two games is much more like the Burnley we know and love, and you can't ask for more than that.

Re: Ashley Westwood
Outstanding last night, showed what ability he does have in his locker in the last two games.
Most curious how Mee, Tarkowski, Taylor, Westwood, Cork, Wood and Barnes specifically have all clicked in the last two games. I do put some of that down to the return of Heaton but it's more fundamental than looking more solid - we look a good team. Quick pass and move, strikers protecting the ball, wingers beating their full backs with pace on the outside and whipping crosses in, overlapping full backs - you would not believe this is the same side that got pumped on Boxing Day.

Re: Ashley Westwood
Definitely a concerted effort to play the ball on the ground the last 2. Amazingly, this helps ball players like Westwood and Cork, and helps players like Wood not have to deal with shiiiite over their heads at 3000mph.
And suddenly they become effective again. A Miracle.

Re: Ashley Westwood
Everything seems easier when you have a winger who wants to get the ball and run forward dragging the rest of them forward.
Instead of passing it backwards to Mee when there's been no other option.
4 assists for a so called defensive midfielder when playing two up front isn't bad at all and should of had a few more over the last couple of games.

Re: Ashley Westwood
We've gone back to a set up which suits the players we have, and things have clicked as a result. We're mixing our play and have options into the channels as well as down the middle of the pitch, which is allowing us to stretch the play and in turn creating a bit more space for the central midfielders.
That said, I don't think it's right to say Westwood has just hit form having been poor all season. He's had good games and bad, but he's been one of our better performers overall this season and I'd be willing to bet his win % is better than any other Burnley player.

That's a harsh assessment. He was showing for the ball from a great throw from Heaton but was surrounded by 3 or 4 and just had it nicked.MT03ALG wrote:Slightly at fault for the Huddersfield goal for not 'protecting' the ball.....

If you think Westwood has been poor this season then it what you think of Cork & Defour. Westwood has been the better of the three generally.bobinho wrote:As quoon says, great tonite. Don’t wanna take anything away from him, always liked him, but he has been poor so far this season.

Has been the best player for the last two games! And just when we needed some energy from the middle too.
A particular highlight last night was when he was shoving Billing back after the Brady foul even though he was half his size!

I thought Westwood was more at fault for not closing down the cross. Gave him far too much space.
He looked to do alright with the ball from Heaton it was just a decent tackle from the Huddersfield defender.

Agreed. He had two options. I thought at the time he chose the wrong one, and conceding from the subsequent attack confirmed it really.ClaretTony wrote:I fault Heaton more. The throw out was almost impossible for him to deal with.
Can’t remember who it was that was away on his own out left, but it certainly looked the better option.

Re: Ashley Westwood
Whatever has happened recently (with the exception of the Everton game we have generally shaped up over the last 7 or so games) it is working a treat. Okay let's not get too carried away with a 2-1 win over a very poor Huddersfield team but the comprehensive victory over a very good (although not on the day) West Ham and the good performances against Liverpool and Spurs gives us some hope now. I'm not sure I agree with people saying it's down to Heaton as he has no influence at all over the more attacking roles, especially the outstanding Dwight McNeil who has been an inspired inclusion despite his age. Westwood might be the better for getting a run of games. Wood and Barnes are getting a better supply from McNeil so their game has improved, although it's probably down to more chances than better finishing.
Whatever it is the overall 'feel' of the team is so much improved. It is vital though that we get a win over Fulham to put us in a far more respectable and manageable position.
Just a thought - has the window made players look at themselves a bit more because I think we have had too many 'shoe-ins' for comfort.
