Cheeky bid for Maja and loan him back...jdrobbo wrote:We have to buy Premier League ready players, but also need to think about the future and getting the average age of the squad down.
Josh Maja at Sunderland is 20, come through their youth team, is very strong and has scored quite a decent return of goals. They want him to sign a new contract this window, as his contract is up in the summer. If he doesn’t sign, this would be a great investment for the future.

Re: Incoming players this january
funnliy enough they only want 1.5 million for him - no idea if he is any good though !
Re: Incoming players this january
There would be a tribunal fee set for him if we didn't meet their asking price so I would be surprised if they only wanted £1.5million given Danny Ings' fee and the escalation of "values" in the leagues these days

Note to self: Check player situation before posting to avoid looking like a banana.
£7m was an okay price for him, providing that Stoke switch things around and start playing him to best effect.

Given that’s only a bit more than we paid for Legzdins that’s a no brainer if we think he has anything about him.Vegas Claret wrote:funnliy enough they only want 1.5 million for him - no idea if he is any good though !

His contract situation means they are in real danger of losing him for next to nothing in a tribunal.Vegas Claret wrote:funnliy enough they only want 1.5 million for him - no idea if he is any good though !
If he goes to a foreign club they get next to nothing.
If he goes to a foreign club, that is owned by the same person that owns an English club, they get next to nothing and the English club can transfer him between clubs at a later date. Its a sneaky, under handed and entirely reprehensible thing to do, but it has happened before.
George Hirst is an example of a player that could possinbly fall into that category.

I posted about him in the Non League thread, with some video snippets.

Can see us picking up disgruntled ex-Premier league players from the likes of Stoke and Swansea
If not then someone like Adam Reach at Wednesday?
Would love us to go `left field` and pick up a gem from Europe.

As already pointed out, he signed for Stoke permanently the other day.Long Time Lurker wrote:If we are looking at right full backs in this window then Ryan Woods might be a good shout. He is obviously a defensive midfielder, which we could use, but I think he could make a good right back after a period of adjustment. I can't see us picking him up on the cheap though.
Not sure why you would target a championship central midfielder to come and play Premier League football at right back.....
Didn't you also suggest Tammy Abraham might come as a reserve winger too??
You do realise this isn't a game of Championship Manager don't you?

I did indeed, based on the fact that we already have a full compliment of strikers. Most of them with proven Premier League credentials. Had we paid a generous fee to bring him in then his best chance of securing any first team game time would have been on the right wing.
In the hypothetical scenario of us signing him who would you have dropped to give him a first team slot?
RE: Ryan Woods
"He is obviously a defensive midfielder, which we could use"
The right back potential was a secondary consideration, because we already have Bardsley and Lowton. After today we can also add Tarks to those two.

If you are going to take a pop at me, pick your moment, set your feet, put your body behind the punch and be accurate.
A poorly timed glancing blow achieves nothing and serves little purpose.
Re: Incoming players this january
I would say that we only have 3 out and out strikers
So yes we could accommodate Tammy Abraham who would offer us something different from the other 3 strikers

If we need a winger then we should sign a winger. If we need a right back then I would like us to sign a right back. Crazy suggestions, I know, but I prefer round pegs in round holes and all that.
If you're going to suggest signings at least try and make them credible.

Re: Incoming players this january
Tarkowski had a good game today. Easily the best player on the pitch. He's no full back though. Fortunately the opposition were as shot shy as us. Playing him at full back against better teams than them would be absolute desperation on our part.

Re: Incoming players this january
I rate him. He's very effective if you play most of your football down the wings, because he's very good at swinging the ball out and spreading play - with JBG and McNeil, I think he'd be a very good addition - however, I just can't see us getting a player like him. There would be other clubs ahead of us if he was to move.Steve1956 wrote:I think we should go all out and sign Shelvey from Newcastle very underated footballer.

I love how he sprays 35 yard passes out to the wingers,he dosent need to run,and I once saw him go face to face with Alec Ferguson which was a joy to behold,Shelvey won that one, great player great characterboatshed bill wrote:Very possibly, but he does tend to walk/jog in games.

As an upgrade on Stephen Defour I could see him in our squad, but SD seems to prefer the higher work-rates of the likes of Cork and Westwood at present.Steve1956 wrote:I love how he sprays 35 yard passes out to the wingers,he dosent need to run,and I once saw him go face to face with Alec Ferguson which was a joy to behold,Shelvey won that one, great player great character

Re: Incoming players this january
Shelvey would be an immense signing, and I feel he would not think twice about leaving Newcastle. If we got him he could be as influential as Joey B when we got promoted. His passing is absolutely first class and he would compliment Cork and Westwood. Gives us an added dimension and would send out a great signal to our fans and anyone else we were trying to get to join our club

Re: Incoming players this january
I’d be surprised if Dyche were to go after Shelvey. Great player on his day, but too inconsistent and has a tendency to switch off from defensive duties.
Re: Incoming players this january
Chances of signing Shelvey are zero for several reasons but not least because of his likely salary.

No. It should be pretty obvious. To back up my view I googled it. Plenty of consistent reports.Steve1956 wrote:Did he tell you that personally...where do people pluck other people's salariesfrom ?

Ah right, just as I thought then you havnt a clue how much Shelvey earns.taio wrote:No. It should be pretty obvious. To back up my view I googled it. Plenty of consistent reports.
Re: Incoming players this january
In the absence of knowing for certain, I think multiple reports coupled with a bit of common sense is a decent guide. Are you suggesting he's paid at a level Burnley would consider paying and not in the region of £70k - £80k a week?Steve1956 wrote:Ah right, just as I thought then you havnt a clue how much Shelvey earns.

Re: Incoming players this january
He's certainly on a lot more than we pay, and though his range of passing is brilliant I don't see how SD will be able to get a tune out of him on a consistent basis when Rafa hasn't managed to.

Re: Incoming players this january
His gross income is c£400k a month. I know this as looked at a business case for insuring players against injury up until 40. The premium was driven by wage, age, length of cover, past injuries etc.
So I do think he's out of our range, and that Rafa is incorrect regarding wages. Agree he would be a great signing BTW.

Josh Maja at Sunderland is 20, come through their youth team, is very strong and has scored quite a decent return of goals. They want him to sign a new contract this window, as his contract is up in the summer. If he doesn’t sign, this would be a great investment for the future.
Just over two years on...
Starting to look a real player now! Excellent for Fulham tonight.

Is there anyone who thinks Lennon will be in charge of Celtics recruitment for next season?
Maja got 11 in 48 in a ligue that lower down is not a high standard.
As for signing a new goalie, if he is better than we have got I've no problem with it, makes sense to me.
