When I was a sprog we used to go to the bay horse at roughlee and have this as a treat. What does everyone else miss that perhaps isnt readily available now ?

The cockles and mussels sales in the pubs from a travelling man's wicker basket.
Food hygiene regulations would never allow anything like that now.

Naw, now restaurants have to serve food on slabs of slate, pieces of wood or in mini straw lined crates for substantially larger prices.Funkydrummer wrote:The cockles and mussels sales in the pubs from a travelling man's wicker basket.

Should I order chips they can be fried once or twice, but I don't expect them to resemble a game of Jenga. If I can count the chips in the stack with the fingers of two hands they haven't given me enough.
Fine dining is one of the marketing masterstrokes of modern times. A third of the food for three times the price and people actively approve of it, madness. I think food should be presented in an attractive manner, but when a chef has to "arrange" minute quantites with tweezers, stacking them high on a smaller plate to give the illusion of volume, you know that they are having a laugh at your expense.

Apart from the guy who still sells cockles and mussels like this in Nottingham...Funkydrummer wrote:The cockles and mussels sales in the pubs from a travelling man's wicker basket.

It's a business decision why people don't do this any more.

Re: so whatever happened to ?
Chip pans and potato chippers; the ones where you put the peeled potato in the appliance then pulled a handle down which forced it through a grid. Best chips ever always made at home.
