BAGGIES DISCUSS NEW PHILLIPS DEAL

West Brom are in discussions with Matt Phillips over an improved contract, Sky Sports News has learned, as they look to fend off interest in the midfielder from a number of Premier League clubs.

Phillips’ good form in the Championship – five goals and six assists - has brought him to the attention of both Cardiff and Burnley, according to reports.

That’s led Albion bosses to move quickly to secure his long-term future at The Hawthorns, although we understand talks are still at an early stage.

Phillips’ current contract expires at the end of next season but it’s thought West Brom will play hard ball with any approaches for their best players in this window.

Having fought hard to keep the bulk of the squad together after relegation in the summer, Darren Moore’s bosses are determined not to now weaken their promotion push.

We should know from previous experiences that West Brom are not the club to deal with. Not worth wasting any time with them.

Why would he come to us anyway when there’s a distinct possibility that they’ll take our place in the Premier League next season?

As above, I wonder if we have learned our lesson with WBA...

Good player. And wouldnt be against a move for him. But I would be hoping we are looking at better, younger, cheaper and not from West Brom.

Fair play to WBA. They are excellent when it comes to keeping players.

The problem with younger, better, cheaper players is that anybody younger and better than him won't be cheaper.

You would have thought we'd give WBA a wide berth in respect to getting any of their current
first team players unless we've been given some encouragement that the player
wishes to leave and wants to come to us.

None of that seems forth coming as yet so we should move on.
Hopefully we have.

To stand any chance of getting a player from WBA we would need a transfer request to go in, and be accepted. Until then, lets look elsewhere

I’m not sure why West Brom get so much stick. Nothing wrong with wanting to keep your players. We just need to know when to walk away.

Won't happen anyway so we shouldn't waste any time on it. WBA would only mess us about and they would want £15m+ better to look in Europe where there is much better value.

Zuber is still my top pick for a new first team winger addition, hasn't changed since my "who would you bring in for 25m" post in November. The rumour mill has been linking him with Leeds and a loan/buy move over the past few days. It has been suggested Hoffenheim are looking for a fee in the region of £10.8m, which seems a touch excessive. In addition to his other qualities he can also play in a number of positions LW/RW/CM/AM/LB. I think a quality utility man is something we could really use in our small squad.

Sinkgraven and Perriera were the other two utility options I've mention in other posts. Although the availability of Daley is probably closely tied to Frankie De Jong and any players they bring in should he leave them in this window. A couple of rumours have linked them with Meritan Shabani, but he strikes me as being a longer term replacement.

By the end of February we should be back to four available wingers, with Lennon scheduled to return by then and Brady coming back after two matches. This would limit the amount of playing time a new "wing only" addition could expect or diminish the playing time that our existing players could expect. A utility option wouldn't place the same demands on a single position.

The rumour mill suggests that Leeds could play the waiting game, which could go either way. If the club wants to move him on in this window then waiting could lead to a lower fee. However, letting the clock run down will reduce the time they have to spend any cash received, which could lead to them keeping him until the next window.

It is very early days yet, and we have quite a long way to go until this window shuts, but I would really like to see some evidence that we are learning from our past mistakes this month. Chasing after Phillips would be a very clear indication that we haven't, but thankfully there is no firm evidence that we are.

Imagine West Brom will be saying the same about us. They set a valuation, and we don’t meet it.

Yeah I don’t get the stick towards West Brom either. We’re the reason deals don’t get done.

Would you be happy if we sold for less than our valuation when we had no intention of selling anyway? Doubt it.

Doesn't look like it, unless we count Steven Reid on a free transfer, but the same could be said for a few clubs.

Interesting one page scroll and read regarding our transfer activity over the years. Not all of the prices are completely accurate, but it does indicate how our spending has changed and how the price of players has increased at all levels.

If we can't negotiate the purchase of a player how would we go on with a bid for the club?

Taking into account their pricing policy it would be £1m for a parking space. The club could set us back at least £100bn.

To echo comments already made really don't feel we can bear any ill-will towards West Brom. They set a value on a player, 'buying' club don't meet it - no sale.

They had a disasterous season last time out but unlike Stoke and Swansea realised the game was up and started planning ahead which gave them a significant head start this term. They are well set to last the pace and make a swift return to the top flight.

We are far from safe so if you are Dawson, Phillips and Rodriguez who still feel you have a PL career ahead of you then sticking with West Brom is arguably a better bet than us or any one of another 5/6 clubs who could still go down. Above that level highly unlikely to be any genuine interest in them anyway.

Would be a shame if we waste time trying to shop at The Hawthorns this window given we have been given so little encouragement to do so in the recent past.

We signed a lad from them for our under 23s last year. Not only that we actually scouted him from their youth system too. It was well known for 6 months that he was coming to us.

Think he's been released since.

Zuber just joined VfB Stuttgart on loan until the end of the season :(

Hopefully, all of this "reactive" wait and see twaddle will lead to something good, but I'm beginning to doubt it.

The chance of us paying over the odds for a player, bringing in a risky take a punt option, or relaxing the window away as we look to add in a jacuzzi at Gawthorpe and sign nobody just increased.

Increased because we haven't signed someone you have a thing for ?

I'm still hoping we will bring in someone good.

The only sports management sim that I occasionally play is Out of the Park baseball.

Nods, I've played previous versions in the distant past. My major gripe was that the economy module was only a few lines of code, which made it very easy to exploit and accumulate a vast fortune. They started to address that with tweaks and nerfs that made everything very unrealistic, instead of taking the time and effort to re-write that module completely. It might be different now.

Out of the Park Baseball 18 plays quickly, the player trading is tighter so it is a lot harder to game the game, the player development is something of a random mess, and it cost me less than £1.

Most importantly, it isn't football so it has given me an inroad into a new sport which has been interesting and fun.

I watch enough football, so devoting any additional time to football related games is a big no for me.

I'm Chester manager in 2020 in the Conference.

Cos I over achieved and got good crowds and promoted, I have a transfer budget of £560,000

Can't spend it though, as better players don't want to come!
