Andy Murray will retire after Wimbledon

Post by ClaretAndJew » Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:01 am

Hip problems.

Says he wants to retire at Wimbledon but may still not be able to due to his pain.

That is the saddest news of the year.

Fantastic player and representative of GB and Scotland.

2 Olympic Gold Medals is unbelievable.
Almost singlehandedly won the Davis Cup for GB.
Grand Slam multi winner.

And he won Wimbledon....which was previously impossible.

Sports Personality of the Year.

Knight of the realm

Survivor of Dunblane

Thank you Sir Andrew de Moray Mark 2.

You have done us all proud.

Best wishes for a fantastic new future.

I feel sorry for him but I can’t be doing with this crying on tv. He has had a great career and will retire a millionaire in his early 30s.

Fair play to the bloke. Not the most elegant of players on the court or in front of the media but he made it.
It's a pity, I think, when any top class sports player, even a Scot, has to finish early through injury.

Has been a great player.
Just one thing I have always found strange: each time he’s won trophies he seems to be British, each time he looses he appears to be Scottish;)

Really is sad news. Murray is one of, if not the best sportsman of this or any other era that these shores has produced. To compete toe to toe with 3 of the greatest tennis players of all time is some achievement. On top of that he never went missing and represented his country with great distinction in the Davis Cup and Olympics.

Completely agree, its a shame we have wasted his legacy and there aren't many more prospects coming through from these shores. In an era of the greatest tennis players ever, he managed to make it to number 1. He can look back on a fantastic career

He’s apparently going to move into a niche area, work-wise, as a Charlton Heston impersonator.

How do you know his legacy has been wasted? If a six or seven year old was inspired to take up tennis in 2013 when Murray first won Wimbledon, it'd take more than a decade for them to make any sort of impact on the professional game. THere could easily be a few teenagers on the junior circuit who have the potential to be top ranking tennis players. We just don't read about them.

He's won Wimbledon and won the Olympics - had a great career despite it being cut short by injury.

There's some sad people who think it's cool or funny to knock him, but he's a top tennis player in an era in which there has never been stiffer competition.

Doubt he will make Wimbledon-better he doesn't as in all probability he will be out in the first round. Sounds like he is heading for the exit like Reeves did under Bond and i think had to have two hip replacements before he was 50

11 slam finals, won 3 and only lost the others to the two greatest ever players.

Great tennis player but by heck he comes across as dull. Think Sports Personslity of the Year should have some personality. It's a bit like Christian Eriksen winning it.

The best British tennis player in my lifetime...I'm not quite old enough to remember Fred Perry! Don't really understand why some people knock him. It's not as if top top tennis players are commonplace in the UK. No doubt Lewis Hamilton will get the same treatment when he hangs up his steering wheel.

I’ve followed him since his teens and love his skills and commitment, both to training and competition. Always thought he would have a short career from the effort he put in and playing so many long, long matches.
Coming out as a millionaire will mean nothing to him. He wanted titles and was so unlucky to be around in the same era as Federer, Nadal & Djikovic but what a decade of unbelievable tennis we have been blessed with.

He'd have won a hell of a lot more, but he's been around in the era of federer, Djokovic and Nadal.

He's had a great career though

Id be glad to see the back of him, at least there will be a bit more time available for other sports on the bbc news now. Watching him sniveling this morning about his retirement whilst learning of Dianne Oxburys death puts him into perspective . I remember at the start of his career he was pretty anti English until it suited him not to be . Eeugh.

You mean he was a bit anti English like the rest of Scotland ?
Turn this on it’s head and there are a lot of people in this country who were happy to call him British when they realised how good he was.
He’s been one of the best British sportsman of all time - whatever your views are on tennis it is a very difficult sport to do anywhere near as well as Murray did. The fact he did it in undoubtedly the strongest era of men’s tennis there has ever been is even more impressive.
As for his personality I think now that his career has finished you will see a lot more about his true personality than we have seen when he is under the pressure of winning and losing. If you look at what he has done in Dunblane you see a very different side to him.

Plus if tennis football ever became a sport he would be world champion - he is unbeatable at it !!

Shame it has to end this way for him but he's had a wonderful career. I remember watching him when he was a wild card in Queen's in 2005 as if it were yesterday. He can be proud of what he's achieved.

Bit of a drama queen and despite his protestations and tears he will play at Wimbledon--he's just setting the scene for a tearful farewell alas.

Apart from the banter, he was just pro Scottish, not anti English. When it came to GB, he did everything in his power, including inviting 'English' players to his Miami home, to train and be coached. The top players to follow him are English - thanks to him.

Quite remarkable that in my lifetime a Brit has won Wimbledon twice, two Olympic Gold Medals and reached No 1 in an era spanning the Feds, Nadal and Novaks of the tennis world. Even more remarkable that I have had to spend so much of his career defending him against idiots who havent read the Daily Mail journalist retracting the Paraguay shirt story nonsense and others who think he should be a stand up comedian capable of hosting the One Show as well as being a quite brilliant sportsman. As you can tell I'm a big fan and will miss him as a Brit doing well in tennis majors but as others have said I'm sure he will surprise many as to how well he will adapt to broadcasting and other avenues that he will go down.
He has every right to retire with his head held high as a truly great British sportsman and thoroughly decent human being!

Agree with all that apart from when he DID go missing about 10 or 12 years ago to concentrate on his singles career and therefore not represent Britain in the Davis cup because we were too rubbish. Albeit he returned later.

But saying that, I have almost always enjoyed the way he played, a mixed style (frustrating when he was quite passive in the early days) and despite his occasionally childish behaviour on the court I like his dry sense of humour off it. Some people don't get it but I think he realised a long time ago that you can't please everyone especially when you're in the public eye. A brilliant player and I'm gutted he's retiring.

Actually I think he was good enough to be considered English :) Being more serious an ex schoolfriend of mine who used to have a fairly senior role at Wimbledon assured me that Andy Murray was a thoroughly pleasant guy in private - he just seemed very uptight on TV - possibly because of shyness. I thought his Wimbledon victories were wonderful moments. Like other people have said however - this is a sad end to a career but hardly a tragedy.

All this he hates the English comments, at the 2006 Wimbledon beforehand whilst England were still in the World Cup, he and Tim Henman did a joint interview and before the interview Henman was digging Murray saying it must be awful being Scottish as you never qualify for the Euro's, World Cup etc the journalist then asked Murray who will you be supporting and as a dig back at Henman said he would support anyone playing England and thus the press had the biggest non-story of the summer.

Shame it’s ending like this for him.

Off the court I don’t see a problem. He’s incredibly shy and you can see that. If he was a footballer and stayed out of the public eye like Scholes, Kante people would love him.

Wimbledon 2013 for me has to be the greatest sporting achievement by any brit. The pressure, the hope and to still produce top level tennis is incredible.

Greatest ever British Sportsman for me. Most would not agree I suppose - but harder to argue that Wimbledon 2013 was not greatest single achievement as Dyched said.

World No. 1 in golden era of 3 greatest players of all time and he has multiple victories against all 3.

On court demeanour terrible and annoying at times but excused by his extreme passion and desire. Off court, an absolute top bloke. Always joined in comic relief stuff taking the mick out of himself and always going out of his way to help people.

Kyle Edmund and Cameron Norrie would like to have a word with you.

Andy Murray's achievements were even more notable given the GOAT talents he had to compete with. A single generation is lucky to get a player such as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, never mind four of them.
