Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Just watching Soton v Derby in the FA Cup (On BBC for anyone that didnt know)
Derby have got some really good players who earn more than some of ours in a league below. Id take Huddlestone.Mount. Wilson. Lawrence.
They get 30k at home.
Id say they ARE bigger than us.
Just goes to show how much we are punching above our weight when we are a league above teams with bigger fanbases and who pay more money.

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
In that sense, yes, but we have players who want to play in the Premier League. They don't.
That's the biggest difference.
That's the biggest difference.
Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
I'm not sure about Derby. Their home support is decent but their away support has always been poor. I'd say the likes of Forest and Wednesday are bigger clubs than us, but probably not Derby.
Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
I just watched a 5 minute spell, and that Bogle who we are linked with lost the ball 3 times consecutively in 3 different moves.

I’d say yes, there’s probably 10 teams I’d suggest are bigger clubs than us in the championship and some very debatable ones

That took ages and what happened to clear and obvious error? Just like the Vydra one. And this is going to be in the league next season! It’s shocking. It needs work but the game don’t care. I think they like more contoversy as sky and the like lap it up and we all know sky run the show. And that’s what football is now. A show. Makes me sad as the game we all love slips further away.

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Or is this just another club who have built a shiny new ground over the past 20-25 years and have somehow become a bigger club? Like Blackburn who built a ground with a capacity beyond what they really need, so people think they are bigger than they are?
What makes a big club? They’ve had a wealthy owner for a while, is that it? Just a few numbers to compare:
Burnley top tier seasons: 56
Derby top tier seasons: 65
Burnley FA Cups: 1
Derby’s FA Cups: 1
Burnley titles: 2
Derby titles: 2
Burnley top 3: 7
Derby top 3: 7
Burnley total trophies: 11
Derby total trophies: 10
Burnley highest attendance: 54,775 (We have hit 54,000 since WW2 as well)
Derby highest attendance: 41,826
Burnley population: 73,000
Derby population: 255,000

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Our wage bill will be more than twice Derby’s.
I doubt any of their players are on more money than our average wage.
At the moment we are a much bigger club than Derby from a financial / turnover / profit point of view.
Of course it all changes if Derby get promoted or we go down

Some key points there in terms of any comparison between the two Clubs, and all of them totally accurate.TVC15 wrote:Our wage bill will be more than twice Derby’s.

Is this the same Derby who ammassed a record 11 points when in the Premier League?

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
I'm surprised they've had 65 top-flight seasons - I assume they were a force in the earlier part of the 20th century?
I remember the Clough-era early 1970s when they won a remarkable league title and did really well in the European Cup. Brain Clough's interview after losing to Juventus in the semi-final (I think) is legendary. I also recall their second title win not long after under Dave Mackay but since then have always felt that, like us until recently, their best years were behind them.
I like Lampard and think he's done well with them. Not sure they are quite good enough for automatic and their play-off record isn't the best. Will be interesting to see if he's in it for the long haul. Can't help thinking with all these 'big' Championship clubs desperate for a return to the big-time that some managerial stability wouldn't go amiss

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Meh. About the same size, probably a bit smaller. One club city hence the higher attendances, nothing more to it than that. Wages and spending a remnant from their failed auto pushes and a wealthy backer. Pretty well managed financially though, financed some big transfers but have kept themselves within FFP limits.

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Without Mel’s Candy Crush money, they could well be where Ipswich are now. Like the Portman Rd outfit, they are a Provincial Team with ambitions to be a Big Player. The only way they see being able to do this is to have a wealthy backer; it’s the same with Forest and Leicester. Only the Latter has had any success other than kicking about in the Championship as perennial also-rans. Now the Backer’s Money has dries up, Ipswich are leaving the division the wrong way.
Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Pretty well financially managed ?
I think they have realised they could not carry on losing as much money as they were. They are in within Financial Fair Play but not by much. Derby are a club who have made a pretty significant loss for a number of consecutive years now.
Luckily they have a very rich local benefactor who took over the club 3 or 4 years ago...who knows how many years he will bankroll them for - look what happened to Bolton. At some point they have had enough and then the spiral downwards is quick and previous league titles and numbers of fans will mean zilch.

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Our wages were £25m more than theirs in 2017 and the gap will only be growing. The romantic view that we are plucky Burnley fighting above our weight on a mid-table championship budget (or even a top-end championship budget) is just a myth. Apart from some relegated clubs who are still adjusting our wages blow a championship wage budget out of the water.JimMcDonald wrote:Just watching Soton v Derby in the FA Cup (On BBC for anyone that didnt know)

Circumstances can change comparatively quickly at football clubs and Derby might argue that just 12 months earlier their basic Wage bill was £6m higher than ours.aggi wrote:Our wages were £25m more than theirs in 2017 and the gap will only be growing. They could. But in reality our wages have been higher than theirs for going on four years and are probably nigh on double theirs at the moment.Royboyclaret wrote:Circumstances can change comparatively quickly at football clubs and Derby might argue that just 12 months earlier their basic Wage bill was £6m higher than ours.
Football does change quickly and I'm sure at some point in the future Derby will be paying much higher wages than us but, at this moment in time, there's no truth in suggestions that we're punching above our weight with clubs like Derby spending more money.

Re: Are Derby a bigger club than us ?
Totally agree with that.......I was simply pointing out that the last time both clubs published Championship accounts (to Jun'16) their basic Wage bill was £6m higher than ours. The only reason our overall Wage bill was greater that year was because we paid a significant promotion bonus (£11.3m).aggi wrote:They could. By most measures, yes, but it a long time since they had a better team.
