Greatest moment of 20C
Greatest moment of 20C
There's a program now about 20C folk, you've probably seen it on the BBC regarding who's the best about this and that. But what about the greatest moment of the 20C apart from me having sex?
I reckon the greatest moment was the Christmas Day football trenches match of 1914, us versus Krauts. And what made it extra special was all the soldiers saying "I'm Burnley'.

I was going to say the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk in 1903 but that ultimately led to setting foot on the moon in 1969, which gets my vote.

Armstrongs words and grainy pictures beamed back from the Moon that the 11yr old Me watched on a 19" bush tv early on that day in July 1969 wide eyed and fascinated with everything Space related.

It was probably an unheralded moment in a laboratory somewhere that we may not even now realise the full potential of.

Neville Chamberlain's little piece of paper and 'we have peace' in 1938. Perhaps the last time a politician was trusted in this country.

Unbelievable what man/woman achieved in those 66 years despite there being two world wars. From a few yards to the surface of the moon. Re: Greatest moment of 20C
The greatest thing shouldn't come out of the worst thing because without the worst thing the greatest thing ceases to be great and is just a thing.
Wouldn't it be great if we all killed millions of people for six years and then stopped, said no one ever.
Anyway, the answer is the electric guitar.

There are a lot of arguments that wars speed up the pace of technological progress.karatekid wrote:Unbelievable what man/woman achieved in those 66 years despite there being two world wars. From a few yards to the surface of the moon. WOW.

Re: Greatest moment of 20C
This depends on what you mean by 'greatest'. Greatest as in best, or greatest as in most influential.duncandisorderly wrote:The greatest thing shouldn't come out of the worst thing because without the worst thing the greatest thing ceases to be great and is just a thing.

In the OP the greatest moment suggested was the soldier's football match. That wouldn't have happened without WW1.
You can see then that I go for the assassination of Franz-Ferdinand which started WW1, which led to the Russian Revolution and the Versailles Treaty, then WW2, the Cold War, United Nations, EU. We still have the legacy now in the Middle East, Africa, virtually anywhere.

Do you mean this image? He’s only a couple of meters away from the camera which he is facing and which is on the leg of the lander. Armstrong pulled a cord which started the camera filming.
