The three at the bottom

Post by Spijed » Sat Jan 19, 2019 6:16 pm

Even Cardiff are starting to run out of steam and with us being 8 & 11 points in front of Fulham & Huddersfield it starting to solidify the bottom positions a bit more.

Oh, and I think we'll end up above Brighton.

Effectively a 4 point gap now. A win today would have been huge.

And you've got to expect both Fulham and Hudds to lose tomorrow. Although a surprise can always happen, but hopefully not. Two heavy defeats for them would go down a treat.

A long way to go. I try not to get too despondent when we are on a bad run because Dyche has proven he can turn things around. Unlike those weeing their pants and calling for Dyche to be sacked just a few weeks ago. Equally I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves when things are going well because this league is so tough.

I won't be getting cocky until we're more points clear than games remaining. 15 games left... only 3 clear.

Chickens eggs until count do not hatch.
If we beat Utd and Southampton then maybe but we still need another 14 points IMO although WHU and Watford are 4 I did not expect

Ranieri still going on that Fulham will stay up. Don't think many others do.

He would be a pretty bad manager if he was saying they were already down.

Well, it would certainly be the funniest relegation in the history of the Prem if they do, but can see them ragging enough points to stay up.

Unfortunately.

Cardiff are key. Beat them here and we should be okay. However its a long long way from safety yet. Crucially we have been hard to beat since Liverpool, apart from the boxing day farce. Burnley are back.

Exactly this. Hell of a long way to go - anything can happen, and quite often it does. Will someone get sucked into trouble? Brighton? We certainly need to keep getting behind the side. The next two games are important - take 3 or more points and we'll hopefully open up a more comfortable gap.

Far too soon for getting smug. This could be our best run of the season and it could be over.
We are playing so much better at least.

Cardiff don't look to have much quality at all. Beaten 3-0 at Newcastle today - that sort of result is usually a sign of a team destined for relegation.

Agree Fulham is the unknown. Saints and Newcastle capable of winning games as are Palace. We need to keep as we are and keep chipping away. We might drag Brighton into it then

We aren't even close to being safe. Need at least a winger and a striker this window.

But yes the bottom 2 look nailed on at the moment... can't see them doing a Leicester 2015 great escape but....

We are effectively 4 points ahead if Colins crew and they have to visit Fortress Turf Moor .....

Innit brilliant getting back to our hard to beat best.... pity the Lino got it wrong today but I reckon we were the better side overall.

Just as important as the current points difference is that all 3 have played the majority of other struggling teams twice. Cant see more than a couple of wins each in their run ins. So long as we beat Cardiff at home I can't see us going down.

Certainly our position has improved dramatically over the last 4 games.

We were 3 points behind Cardiff & Southampton, 5 behind Newcastle, 7 behind Palace
and 10 behind Brighton. One point above Fulham and 2 more than Huddersfield
And things were beginning to look pretty grim to be honest.

Now we're level with Palace and Southampton, a point ahead of Newcastle, 3 ahead of Cardiff
and just 4 behind Brighton. 8 above Fulham and 11 higher than Huddersfield.
And things are looking up to be fair.

However, I do think one or two teams may well rally.
If Fulham can get a result against Spurs tomorrow (hopefully not) then it might be them.
Cardiff have brought in two new forwards and one of them looks quite useful. Third top scorer
in the French top league. So it could be them as well.

We've got most, if not all, of our players back up and running from injuries which may well be very
critical over the next 6 -10 games and more importantly beginning to play much better and get some wins.
Heaton coming back, McNeil's introduction, Wood and Barnes improving and midfield too, (Westwood in particular)
They've all had a part to play in our performances improving.

Hopefully we can continue in the same vein and get the 4 or 5 wins that might keep us up.
Or whatever number of points required. 15 or 16 points might just be enough.

Looking forward to the day when can look at the table and think we're not far off safe and
that those below us will need a miracle to catch us up.

I like the prospect of playing Man U next, the run has to stop somewhere, why not with us.
It's 3 big games in a week, and I was hoping we would play our best team against Citeh and Southampton, but I just feel United are ripe for a picking.

3 key games at home are Southampton, Palace & Cardiff these are important games to beat the drop. We should aim at taking 3pts at these games
Add to that home games vs Leicester and Wolves, we win all 5 of these we will be as good as safe on 37pts.

Away games at Brighton and Newcastle could maybe give us a boost.

Its totally in our hands

The Southampton, Cardiff and Palace games at home are massive.
Wolves and Leicester at home, tough on paper.
Newcastle, Brighton, Bournemouth, Everton away, ditto.
United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Arsenal, any point gained against that lot, a bonus, hope one or two of them have an off day playing us, we may need them to at the end.

Potentially not a lot of wriggle room at all, but we can do it.

Huddersfield, Fulham and Cardiff to go down.

Looking at the table everyone from Bournemouth upwards are pretty secure,Brighton should have enough to get over the line,Palace are the ones who could be dragged into trouble, they are only scoring a goal a game,Southampton have belief now Hughes has been potted, and Newcastle win the 6 pointers when they need to like today.

If we keep the current levels up we'll stay up no problem, the current bottom 3 will be the bottom 3 come May.

Cardiff’s away record is terrible - they have only scored 6 goals.

Then look who they have to play at home :-)

They won’t get past 30 points. I suspect our home game against them will see us mathematically safe before the tough finish.

Basic rule* of thumb - double** a team's points and see where we are in relation to that.

This works well with 23 games gone and 15 still to go as it takes into account any amazing upturn in form.

Huddersfield (22) potentially (28) after tomorrow.
Fulham (28) potentially (34) after tomorrow.
Cardiff (38)

*this is a rule I've just invented.

** this doesn't work for teams who have more than 45 points with 15 games remaining.
