Joyce Pickles
Just heard sad news that Joyce Pickles has passed away. Ran commercial side of club for a number of years and was a lovely woman then ran Superleague kits with Frank Casper.

Gained the nickname Joyce the Voice after recording a message on Clubcall with a gruff voice selling souvenirs I think for Wembley

Sad news indeed, I had the pleasure of meeting Joyce on an away trip to Plymouth, she was a lovely lady, was she not related to our past club secretary, Albert Maddox ?

Re: Joyce Pickles
Sad news indeed. She gave so much of herself to Our Club. RIP, a true Claret.
Re: Joyce Pickles
I've still got Joyce's autograph next to Trevor Stevens from back in the day.
She was well chuffed to be asked for her autograph.
RiP.

Re: Joyce Pickles
I think that was Cathy Pickup who was related to Albert Maddox. Sad to hear this news. She used to come in my bar along with Frank Casper, Cathy and Pauline back in the mid 90s. Always good for a laugh with that bunch. Re: Joyce Pickles
Very sad news RIP Joyce. I knew Joyce quite well and whenever we met, it was a breath of fresh air talking to her and she always asked how I and the family were, before talking about the club. For a long time she worked for Wigan Rugby Club and always was a workaholic.
Joyce may now be having a chat with Ray Lott, who worked for her and Frank for a while. Herts Claret, Cathy was Alberts daughter.

I thought she was. Another one of the team that used to come in after each game was Maggie Law.Bfc wrote:Herts Claret, Cathy was Alberts daughter.

Re: Joyce Pickles
Stunned with this news - wasn't so long since I was talking to her. She's worked for Wigan RLFC for a good number of years now although she also ran her own businesses for years. When she was at Burnley, the club shop was her own business rather than the club running it.
Really sad news, I liked Joyce.
EDIT: Just checked and she was still the sales manager at Wigan.

Maggie is still around Herts, although hasn't worked at the Turf for a number of years. I saw her only recently outside the ground.Herts Clarets wrote:I thought she was. Another one of the team that used to come in after each game was Maggie Law.

Re: Joyce Pickles
Made a couple of phone calls. She was still working so it must have been sudden. She was out and about a couple of weeks ago.
I was trying to think how long she worked at BFC. She definitely replaced Jim Thomson in the summer of 1987 and left to set up the business with Frank Casper which would have been around 1990 or 1991.

I hope I'm not showing my ignorance here, but is Joyce the lady who does the ground tours?

Re: Joyce Pickles
I don't know the truth of it but was told that in the 1987-88 season when we went to Wembley, the club made no money merchandising because they'd sold the club shop rights to Frank Casper and Joyce Pickles for a flat fee of £10,000.

Re: Joyce Pickles
I met her, I think, in 1989, when she signed me up for the Burnley Booster Club (or whatever it was called). Logistics didn't work out, but she was extremely nice, as was Frank Casper. She still has family over here on this side of the pond, in Barrie, Ontario.

Re: Joyce Pickles
Not quite the case. The club didn't make any money on the merchandising but it was just Joyce at the time, she wasn't in business with Frank then. She retained that throughout her time at Burnley.Oshkoshclaret wrote:I don't know the truth of it but was told that in the 1987-88 season when we went to Wembley, the club made no money merchandising because they'd sold the club shop rights to Frank Casper and Joyce Pickles for a flat fee of £10,000.

Re: Joyce Pickles
Just read that. 16 years, wasn't so sure it was that long but I know she helped recruit the retail manager who moved there from Burnley during the 2008/09 season.ashtonlongsider wrote:https://www.wiganwarriors.com/#UuzPYbLVCff5m6f1.97

"A force of nature" - I think that sums her up really well.
I'm still stunned at this news. I knew she had health problems but she was still the same enthusiastic Joyce when I saw her recently.

I used to be a collector for the clarets revival "draw in the 80s. Had lots of laughs with Joyce. She was a lovely bubbly lady. Really really sorry to hear of her passing. We've lost a good 'en.
