10 years today

Post by wilks_bfc » Mon Jan 21, 2019 11:24 am

10 years ago today I watched one of the best & worse games of my Claret life

https://youtu.be/kECLRq4TIAk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I still think the disappointment of missing out on getting to the final, spurred us through those final months and into the play offs

It’s still hard to watch that first Spurs goal go in. Don’t think I’ve ever been as disappointed coming off a match and I’ve seen a fair few relegations. If only someone could have whispered into my ear that ten years later we’d be into our fifth season in the Premier League. Might have cheered me up!

Or whispered into your ear that we'd be back at Wembley at the end of the season and be promoted. That would have helped, too.

I had all sorts of texts and messages from mates about that match, and the funniest, although it hurt at the time, was from a PNE fan who said "I've been looking at a map of London all day mate, but I still can't find Burnley within 3 minutes of Wembley..."

I do take great pleasure in asking him how PNE are getting on these days, you know because I dont follow lower league football anymore :D

I've always thought that, and the performance at West Brom in the FA Cup three days later was terrific. In the league, we had lost the previous four games and went on to lose the next one at Watford with a dreadful performance. But it was at West Brom, and the way we fought back, that I always thought was the moment we could go on and do it.

Just watched it again and I'm asking myself why. As numbing a result as I can think of over my many years of mind-numbing outcomes to games. A cruel end but as we know now better was to come.

Biggest game I've seen on the Turf.

I don't suppose we have hosted many semi finals (play offs excluded)

Was our fourth in the League Cup but probably that's it - we've lost all four too with the first two needing a third game - Aston Villa (1960/61), Swindon (1968/69), Liverpool (1982/83) and then Spurs (2008/09).

What an amazing night. Despite losing I felt incredibly proud of our club & players that night. I echo the thoughts that this defeat drove that group of players on to promotion.

They were all excellent, but a specific mention to Robbie Blake's performance. He was incredible that night.

When that Pavlichenko scored i literally fell to my hands and knees, I was exhausted and really gutted (don't be naughty :D). Only at a game like that could you go through so many emotions. The play off I was calm and relaxed because I knew we were going to win. That semi final was just wow. I'm big enough to admit I had a tear running down my face with disappointment after the game and after the play off game too but that was pure joy. Brilliant season.

Every time I watch that I wonder who the 2 people at 1.23 are?
Maybe Rovers fans having a look at how the other half lived or Spurs fans who couldn't get a ticket?

As the OP says best and worse game.

A real rollercoaster of emotion from elation to despair but still immensely proud of the way we played and the performance of Robbie Blake in particular.

Wasn't it the one season where the rules had changed in the competition and away goals only counted double if scores level after extra time, otherwise we would have gone through after the 90 minutes?

The walk from the car to the ground for the West Brom game the following game took a lot longer than it should have done for me and my mate.

Every Baggie we passed wanted to talk to us about the Spurs game, how well we played and how unfair it was that we hadn't gone through.

Not sure they were as complimentary on the way back after Pato's last minute equaliser

I was in Prague in a bar with four of my mates watching this.

Surrounded by Czech's who were willing us to get the third goal after I had explained the implications, and getting something like twelve people to collectively stand on their tables when Rodriguez scored.

I have never been so happy to be surrounded by copious amounts of Absinthe as when Pavlyuchenko scored, absolute numbness.

I always like the clip of those Spurs fans at 1 minute 23 seconds on the video. Everyone around them going bonkers, then two just absolutely shocked as the camera pans.

I must have gone through every emotion imaginable that night, and I don't think I've ever felt so close to my club.
Being knocked out was probably the best result for us in the end as I doubt we'd have gone on to promotion otherwise.

Is this another game where we've influenced a changed in the laws? I'm sure the following year they abolished away goals only counting AET?
(the other being the potential handball goal coming in next year)

As already mentioned, one of the loudest noises I've witnessed on the Turf when the 3rd went in (along with Bristol City at home the same season, Man Utd at home the next season and Boro at home the Championship season)....but it was not to be.

I had forgotten how late Spurs scored their first goal. Still gutted.

The only time iv ever cried at a Burnley game.

So many emotions that night. One second im ready for the final whistle to invade the pitch the next head in my hands crying.

As previously mentioned i felt so close to the club this night.

I bought a ticket for that game off someone on ClaretsMad on the night of the game and it's the best decision I've made as a Burnley fan.

I wonder if that person is on here. I met him outside the Coral shop shortly before kickoff and we shared a joke about sticking a fiver each on the bet that Coral were advertising in their window: Blake to score first and Burnley to win 3-0 at 2,000/1

We kept our fivers.

Related to that night. Does anyone recall the song penned and uploaded by a fan, berating Pavlecenko, I've often looked for it when I've remembered back to that semi but can never find it.

It was 300/1 as my mate put a quid on.
I went for a fiver on the 66/1 3-0 scoreline as Blake hadn't been playing regular. So couldn't predict the steating line up.

Coincidence alert.

Jay Rod has scored against the same keeper Ben Almwick (sp) tonight who's playing for Bolton. Who played for Spurs that night when he scored as well.

Nope. It definitely wasn't 300/1 in the window. It was 2,000/1, and i know this because i remember cursing to myself that i could've won ten grand from my fiver.

Edit: It might have been 1,000/1 actually and the ten grand was from our combined stake. But either way it was definitely not 300/1 in the window. I don't doubt your friend though. 300/1 and 1,000/1 isn't a massive difference in book percentage.

No but I do recall a couple of Spurs fans singing a song hailing Pavlecenko while brazenly walking among the Burnley fans up towards the Belvedere Road entrance after the game.

Whilst not condoning any kind of violence it wasn't the smartest thing to be doing under the circumstances and they ended up being twatted by a couple of Burnley 'lads' before being rescued by other Burnley fans and the police.

I'm just glad that I couldn't get shut of my ticket in the Sparrow Hawk before the game (and boy did I try).

Superb, and Robbie Blake was magnificent.

It took a day to sink in that we hadn't won.

I think It was called "I'll never forgive you Roman Pavlyuchenko", it doesn't seem to be online any more.
