REPORT: Devastated but unbelievably proud

Post by ClaretTony » Mon Jan 21, 2019 6:13 pm

There's a thread on the board today remembering the events of ten years ago when Spurs so cruelly knocked us out of the League Cup (see link).

It prompted me to dig out my report from that game and I've now added it to the Games to Remember feature on the site.

Yeah it was great. Just had the feeling something special was happening. Think the spurs fans did too.... never know them so quiet.

If I remember correctly, it was the very last time I so my all time Claret favourite player Ralph Coates who was the half time guest. Sadly no longer with us but memories of Ralphy in a Claret & Blue shirt will live with me for ever.

Ralph also introduced to crowd a couple of seasons later along with two other former players

Ralph came with Brian O'Neil for the Leicester game (2nd home game of 2010/11). Sadly it was his last ever visit. Richard Oldroyd did a lovely interview with him after our 5-0 mauling at White Hart Lane later in 2009 which we finally published at the time he had his stroke.

'memories of Ralphy in a claret and blue shirt'

caked in mud. Think that might have been a fantastic 2-0 win over Liverpool on my birthday in April 1966. Stand to be corrected if not. Not only a very skilful player but a tough one too. My abiding memory was him sitting on the ball at Ewood Park, 2-0 up on New Year's Day also 1966.

As you say Tony a time to be a very proud Claret and I re-run the Capital Punishment DVD whenever I might need to lift my football spirits but I believe going out of the cup that night was meant to be. If we had gone to Wembley and probably been beaten by Man Utd then we would have looked back on the season as something of a triumph but I don't think we would have made 2 journeys there and I wouldn't swap the day we had at Wembley for the world. We found the Premier league had a look around we left and came back stronger, all part of our rich history. UTC.

You could try Burnley Memorabilia in Burnley Market Hall, they might have a copy.

I was sat with my 11 year old nephew at the back of JH upper tier in front of the press box. Henry Winter was sat behind us. At the end of the game the lad was in bits and I was trying to console him saying that the lads gave it all,

Winter wrote a superb article about our tremendous effort and based it on me telling my ‘tearful son’ that “their legs went...”.

Still have the report. Brilliant performance by Burnley.

"the over-priced Gareth Bale" made me chuckle.

Two future Real Madrid stars in Modric and Bale on show that night, and we were magnificent! A Ball D'or winner no less now. I bet you'd have to go back to the 60s before we had apast, present or future Ballon d'or winner lining up against us?
Incidentally, I put a £2 bet on Robbie Blake to score first and Burnley to win 3-0 in 90 mins that night. Was still gutted but the wad of notes definitely took the edge off!

Me too, but at the time he was struggling to get into the Spurs side and was looking every bit an overpriced flop. I think it is fair to say that things changed in his favour. :D

I became a shareholder, just in time to secure my ticket. Fantastic performance and unjust outcome.

Proud to be a Claret.

(Good luck Burton tonight!)

My wife hasn't attended a game with me since, she states that the emotions were just too much and she didn't want to go through that again, I tried or explain that to follow Burnley you need to be made of stern stuff.
