Catching Pneumonia

Post by ontario claret » Mon Jan 21, 2019 7:05 pm

I was just out for a spin in my car. My temperature gauge said the outside temperature was -17C., with the wind blowing out of the northwest at about 30 mph. They were expecting the overnight "windchill" temperature to be about -38C. And the forecast? Two days from now: rain, and a temp around +4C. (Yes, plus 4.) No wonder people catch pneumonia in this country so often. The temperature swings are beyond bizarre. :P

Actually, it's a choice between pneumonia and consumption with you lot. Tropics aren't any better. Too many bugs. My grandfather caught malaria in the tropics and eventually died from it after serving in the Danish merchant marine. Unless you move to California, there is no perfect climate. And now they're dying from a total lack of rainfall.

Classical "clap" is venereal disease. So, unless you've been hanging out at the Kierby again, there shouldn't be a problem.

Discovered the other day, whilst with the nurse, that if you are over 60 you can get a free injection for
Pneumonia. It won't stop you getting it but it will relieve the symptoms apparently.

I'm having some treatment at the moment so can't partake, but intend to do so as soon as I can.

Just saying like. :D

No thank you! I spent enough years in Burnley to know, without doubt, I detest rain.

As ‘ontario claret’ noted, it’s pretty cold in Ontario right now, overnight -28 C in Kitchener. Car wouldn’t start this morning, had to boost the battery. On the upside, bright, sunny, not a cloud in the sky.

Beats the hell out of rain.

If it didn't rain there would be no beer.

The point I was trying to make was that it's the great swings in temperature that make you susceptible to catching something. In North America, storms are usually forming either over Texas or Colorado. The "stormpaths" decide if we in Southern Ontario get either rain or snow. We didn't get a lot of snow with this last one, but it dragged a bunch of cold air behind it. Apparently the next one is going north, because it will be a little snow again, but a bunch of rain. You don't have to shovel rain. The east coast of Canada always gets it worst. Dumps of between 30-40 cms. at a time are very common.

Well, you're always welcome, CC. May and September are the best months. But if FCBurnley can survive in Florida for 12 months of the year, then anytime is OK. You know what they say about mad dogs and Englishmen going out in the noonday sun. Just make sure you bring your little charmer with you. She really is a bundle of joy.

I spent 10 days in California in October 2017 and 5 days after arriving back in the UK I was admitted to hospital as an emergency patient where it was diagnosed that I had contracted Streptococcus Pneumonia and that the infection had entered the bloodstream. Fortunately, having received some excellent treatment at Northwick Park Hospital I was allowed home after a 12 nights stay. The doctors confirmed that I had either contracted the infection whilst abroad, either during the flight or possibly at the airport.

I had received the pneumonia jab 2 years previously but was informed that this is ineffective against the most serious forms of pneumonia.

Canada’s a lovely place to live, people don’t realise how vast this country is. Vancouver area is much like UK, rains too much…..yuck. Here in Ontario the temperatures can have a 60 degree C swing between winter and summer, takes a little getting used to for sure. Many winter days are beautiful, cold as hell, but sunny, not a cloud in the sky, roads are dry, easy to get around. Summers can be as hot, humid as parts of US South. If you ever visit, a ‘must visit’ is Old Quebec City, lovely place to visit, summer or winter. Most speak English too, much their displeasure.

It's a "drier" cold here. The cold comes from the Prairies in the winter, when the predominant wind is from the northwest. Winnipeg is the coldest and windiest major city. In the summer, the predominant is southwesterly, and often comes straight from the Gulf of Mexico. I don't mind the heat during the day, but at night I can't sleep when we're in the middle of a full-on heat wave. Sometimes you just pray for some kind of a breeze, and a fan next to your bed definitely comes in handy. Of course, modern houses (mine was built in 1955), have complete "home comfort" systems. That usually means in-ground heat exchangers.

10 cms. of unforecasted snow last night, but the main event comes tomorrow. Up to 30+ in the projected outlook. Of course, weathermen are never totally correct.

26 in Dubai? That's downright frigid by their standards, isn't it? Are you employed in construction or engineering, Bosscat?

Also, people talk about Old Quebec all of the time, but they never talk about places like Old Brooklin. (That's where Brown's IGA, and the Brooklin Hotel used to be.) Seriously, smalltown Ontario has a certain charm not found in most places. You can find the basics of the old English/Scottish/Irish bloodlines still alive in generations many times removed from their native origins. I even play euchre with a lady from Colne a few times a month who now lives in Pickering, Ontario. It really is a small world.

They are. But they arent in bars or pubs as such. And its mega expensive.

But you dont even notice the lack of it tbh. We didnt go for that reason so didnt bother at all and it was still an amazing place to visit.

Southern Spain isnt bad and its a 3 hour flight from this area. Tropics I like too having spent years there but it depends on the country. Indonesia my favourite.

I have pneumonia at the moment. At 36 its horrible as hell. Came on from a bad cold last week, went for urgent medical help as couldnt breathe and was told I was drowning as some of my lungs werent getting any o2 due to infection. Well on the mend now though hopefully and will have the lungs recharged for Saints on Saturday.
All that said, would love to visit Canada. Pneumonia is horrid.
